Don't want to come accross like a tree hugger but that looks a bit cruel to me. Sorry, cold.

Isn't voting cold on a deal simply because you think something associated with the deal may be cruel, a little silly? The red dye used in the colouring of baked beans labels may, due to testing, be cruel to animals... let's all vote 10p tins of baked beans deals cold. Hey, it seems like the cardboard used in Amazon packaging looks like it's a bit cruel to trees - let's vote the deal cold!

My 8 year old will love this, and if after buying it the ants look distressed I will post back and let everyone here know. For now, voted hot.

Won't vote cold but will say the following, without a Queen the ants will die slowly over a period of 2-3 weeks so it will educate your young one about death and mortality and by that time they will likely be bored of them anyway

Nice price though !!

Hot! Was after one of these for my 10 year old niece's birthday as she saw one of these just after Christmas. She is obsessed with insects at the minute.

If it was cruel they would sell the things.

Hey, if you want to show your 8 year old how ants die slowly, your choice.

Oh and thanks for calling me silly for expressing my opinion, I hope you teach your kid better manners than that...

http://www.ehow.com/how_2292705_catch-queen-ant.html If anyone feels bad about it you could always catch yourself a queen before she has a colony and create your own and then no ants will die. Also the ants are so small that it is like a massive new world to them. they are far too busy to take in the sights so will love it especially if you leave nice food for them in there...saves their little legs trapsing for food.;-)

hot for me!

He/she didn't call you silly, they asked if your reason for voting cold was silly, so do parenting issues really need to come into it  But if you want to look at it that way, hopefully you teach your kids to read properly/get their facts right before accusing ppl of name calling..

What a silly example from a blinkered consumer

I know, i wonder how many of these people saying these things have ever used ant powder, boiling water or stamped on them in the past. Vanity wise, are they sure the make up / deoderant that they are wearing has never been tested on animals? What eggs do you buy? Do you make sure that the eggs you buy are from free roaming chickens rather than ones in a tiny cage? Do you care that the milk you have in your tea/coffee has been taken from a cow that is a sensitive creature that has had her baby taken away from her (so the baby is not given the natural love and affection from its mother) and is pumped full of hormones to keep that milk coming for our benefit. And cows milk is not something vital to our diet.

Ignorance is no excuse. So i am afraid that if you have such a moral dilema over this ant farm(which i have shown how you can use without causing deaths of ants) then i truly hope that you are not doing/using the things mentioned above.

It is a long way down from that moral high tower sometimes!

Are you really stupid enough to think ANYONE will take that course of action?? Therin lies the problem, people will buy it, will find a few ants and watch them die slowly. As for the "high ground" I am more than happy with the view!

Great spot abbielonglegs! This deal has been featured over at the HUKD blog, Playpennies!

can i fry them with a magnifying glass while they are in here?

Looks cool to me, you could feed them wasps and such. I hate wasps and people who vote cold on obviously hot deals.

lol

How does the Queen keep the ants alive, do you think? And surely they die quickly in Ant World,, as opposed to slowly, if their lifespan is indeed 2-3 weeks as you insist

Dead ant, dead ant, dead ant, dead ant, dead ant, dead ant, dead ant.....

that looks a bit cruel to me.

I would have to disagree, the ants have no natural predators inside a tank, also, as a primary school teacher, its so important that children can see and experience things rather than just learning the facts. With education perhaps they will be less inclided to step on ants in the playground, and so fewer ants in the long run will die.

Aside from which, ants have no problem with it, i hear no melancholic, emo music issuing from the ant farm to express their woe.

Also, where do we draw the moral line? Are fish in a tank wrong? Is it cruel to put a dog on a lead?

Just my thoughts!

Great product, educationally fantastic. :)

http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20070601210142AApqisD An interesting bit on ants so that you look very intelligent when using the ant farm. A queen ant lives for 10 years and normal ants only 90 days! what a bum rap they have anyway.
#32
Thanks OP  Just ordered one to setup for my 2 daughters. Im sure they will be fascinated by it all.

Get one in the summer, and get a magnifying glass too. Put it on the window sill, and play zap the ant. Better than any computer game.
#34
i bought one of these along with a tri-tops aquarium(i think) last year, i thought it would be a good idea getting an educational toy.

however, i was really disapointed with it and the ants kept getting out. hot price as i paid a tenner but the product is crap.

Seconded. Leaving aside all the arguments about cruelty, this is simply a crap product and kids will be disappointed with it. Send 'em out in the garden to see some insects in their natural habitat.
#36
I bought a similar one of these a couple of years ago and the ants dies within a couple of days so wasnt that great in the end.

Price increased to £9.75 this morning.
