Good price for a good brand :)

I might be wrong, but even with known brands I think they still make poor power supplies sometimes(just not as poor as other makes). Still better than an unknown make and very cheap with a 6pin, but check it out thoroughly first as IF it's one of their poorer lines I'd hate to rely on it for anything close to 400w.
Also been cheaper before. I've seen a couple deals get cold even though they're the current cheapest for that reason.

PS I own an antec, so I'm not just slating the brand, some of them are real quality.

Gets a good review from HardwareSecrets (US model without active PFC), though this UK model does have active PFC as it's an EU regulation

Better cases, but half decent PSUs. Wouldnt run anything over the x7xx series (AMD) on it though, its simply not worth it!

According to the review linked to in the post below yours this had a max power output of 550w @ 48.5c, seems alright. Also its not made by Antec, just badged by them.

basiq = sounds like cheap and not good

buy with caution guys. Not a fan of cheap PSUs (unless its going in an old or spare machine)

Having worked in a PC shop for 2 years I saw plenty of top end PSUs fail as well, my current one has lasted 4 years so far yet was a cheapish (£40) replacement for a £70 one that blew after 15 months. Sure the bargain basement ones are worse but this has 2 true 12v rails and seems to kick out more than the required juice (although that is the yank one, I expect the PFC one will not go much above the 450w stated).

Check what you really use, if its close to 450w I'd look elsewhere but if you are under 400w I'd say go for this.

Having worked in PC World for 2 years, back in my Student days, I saw many numptees aka sales staff give 'advice' on stock they were clueless on. I remember asking a senior (lol he was a muppet too) what to do if a customer asked me a question on an item I didn't know the answer to. His advice was 'make it up, so long as you get a sale who gives a boll ocks'.

I also saw on many occasion fellow staff members, when asked a question, picking up the box and reading the blurb, like the customer can't read or something.

To be fair, I spoke to someone that is still with the company and he reckons things are much better now, with staff going on more courses etc.

This has nuts all to do with the PSU but I thought I'd look cool dissing on PC World as thats what the cool kids do!

The geek community do give 'cheap' psu's a rough ride. I've had many generic psu's that have outlasted name brands. For the reduced price of this Antec I feel is well worth it. If it was at the price before the discount it would be very cold.

I ended up with one of the Earthwatts series from Antec the last time PC World had a sale but this was after first buying the 350 w version of this. Which I took back due to a crackling noise at the connector.

From my days in IT, we used to say:
Antec = Awfull Nasty Trash with Exploding Capacitors

Poor quality capicitor's are responsible for a lot of hardware failures.
Easy enough to replace with quality caps if your handy with a solder.

Situation for so many bad capacitors comes about from an electrolyte formula that was copied/stolen that wasnt complete when it was half-inched.

Compounded and confused by the fact some cheaper generic manufacturers DO have decent quality caps while a lot of larger company's source bad caps - resulting in their products getting a bad press.

    This or xfx pro?

Cold from me. I've only ever had one psu blow on me, taking out the motherboard and hard disk, and that was an Antec.

The only thing Antec made is the label, the power supply itself is by FSP.

Fair enough - it'd probably be better if it *was* an antec but so long as it gets good reviews that's all that matters. Just always worth remembering it's not just the brand name that matters but the make/model. :)

Antec do not directly manufacture or design any of their power supplies, to summarise, they basically just pick from designs manufacturers like FSP have as their available platforms and select the grade of components to use.

I thought bad caps were very much a thing of the past?

The faux pas you refer to - industrial espionage - resulted in huge numbers of caps, mainly with the brand name Jackson, flooded onto the market in their millions.

    http://spectrum.ieee.org/computing/hardware/leaking-capacitors-muck-up-motherboards

Many well known manufacturers were 'conned' with these bad components, which would bulge or even burst open after some useage. I had a bad run with Abit motherboards - but it really wasn't a manufacturing fault with Abit - they were just conned like a lot of other big names....

I for one, am very happy with the 550 watt VP series PSU I bought from PCW's last 'half price' sale - then £29.99 as well.
