80gb ipods werent released a year ago...?
#5
I think they were dude, but that would have been a VERY good price back then

Anyway, I reckon these type of ipods are on the way out.. I reckon the touches are the way to go - real mutli-function units.
Doesn't make this a bad buy, it's a good price if you ask me...voted hot!

They were released September 5th 2007. The reason iPods don't usually go in many sales or deals (besides offers on accessories) is because Apple put huge pressure on retailers to keep the prices up, and if they don't, risk Apple losing confidence in them and not sending them much stock!

The storage capacity of the i-touch is nothing like this though, so it depends what you want it for, if you just want something to store all your music video and pictures on then this is perfect.

In November I paid £215 for the 160GB from the Apple Store (that included a £15off discount through my work).
I would've thought there would be better deals on these things? Guess you're right, bossmanuk

Paid £127 for mine a month ago.

The new classic is annoying, they have changed the size so its the perfect size to slide out your pocket and keep smashing on the ground, i didnt want to have to put it in a bulky case, now I am going to have to.

It is annoying that they decided not to put the suede pouch in like they did on the ipod video.
Also the eu volume limit is annoying as well, anyone found a way of removing it?

Yes if you look in the settings you can change the level of it and trust me i have mine set to a maximum of 1/4 as it is more than enough

settings, volume limit set it to max and if that is not loud enough buy some real headphones
#13
can these things be used as a USB mass storage device so I can carry my work files around as well?

TIA

i have it set that set to max and also the volume set to max as well on some tracks its fine (its certainly not overly loud) but on others its as if ive turned the volume halfway down and is a real problem, have some creative headphones coming from amazon so hopefully they might improve things, otherwise i'll go back to the ipod video which is permantely in the igroove.

Yep any of the ipod variety can. I use my nano as a usb lol
#16
can I drag/sync all my mp3's on to it or must I use Itunes?

R.
#17
Nope got to use iTunes, unless someone has worked out a way around this?
#18
You have to use iTunes, I dont know of any other way....but iTunes aint all that bad to be fair. it works very very well. My only gripe...which is a major grip is they dont give any video conversion software to put your vids onto the ipod... they basically expect all video's to be d/l'd from iTunes store. Not a bad deal, but defo hot. Still cheaper than Amazon..+ 3% quidco so better than amazon.
#19
winamp works perfectly well with ipods. prefer it to itunes myself, can jus drag and drop inside winamp or right click > send to ipod

Use videora, it even uploads the converted vids to itunes after each conversion.

students can also get this for £143 direct from apple with free engraving and free postage if they purchase it from a university computer (10% discount goes off uni ip addresses).

edit - scrap that, think they stopped doin it for ipods, just on macbooks and software etc
#23
is it mp4 format for ipod vids?

i use WINAVI so thats useless :(

Egg where doing 5% discount at Dixons - not sure if its still available, but it was just a code that needed entering - no need to actually order on egg card.
#25
do you need to store 80gb of stuff on your pc so that it doesnt remove it from your ipod when you sync
#26
use winamp to put the songs on it

i dont see how apple get away with forcing people to use their POS software to put mp3s onto an mp3 player, its a joke

and i HATE how you HAVE to install quicktime...

You can sync it initially then switch off auto sync and just add stuff afterwards.
#28
Egg now does 2.5% direct cashback to your card instead. Add this to the 3% Quidco and you have at least got a bit of a discount going.

Oh and for those questioning how much of a bargain it is, etc. This 80GB Classic 6G model of Ipod (Not 80GB Video 5G from year before range) was released at £159 in mid September 2007. When it came out it was a replacement to the 80GB Video Ipod that had been selling at about £240 previously.

Basically you are only saving £20 on your Ipod by having waited 8 months to buy, but in another 4 months a 160GB one will probably be available for this sort of money

They have also now locked the video output to only new apple certifed devices. This caused me an issue as i cannot use the video from the classic on the dock I wanted to buy :x

"30 hours audio playback or 5 hours video playback " - Is this right? I would have expected a lot more from an 80gb device:?
#31
Great for music but useless for Video IMO. The day we get DivX playback on an iPod.... For some people, converting something for the iPod will take almost as long as it does to watch it!

I agree, but the touch is bound to increase its capacity in the near future.

To remove the sound limit go to http://gopod.free-go.net/

It is a great piece of software that removes the eu limit :D

Thats why the creative zen vision-m was/is better - although not as large storage.

If creative ever brought out a zvm 80 or 160 gig like these ipods - I would buy one in an instant

If you could get such a good range of car connection kits and other docks then I would join you

good price, handy to have 80GB available in your pocket, transfer large files, store entire music collection.

One thing people dont realise is if your computer or external hard drive goes on the blink there's all the music/videos on your ipod and just sync it back to the computer. This recently happened to me, I store my iTunes library on an external HD (Iomega), turned it on and nothing, tried getting software to get it to connect, doing allsorts and no luck. Luckily I have the 80GB with everything on so copied it back.

Transfer rates of ipod touches are slower than classics.

Also sound output slightly better from classics.

If Apple had Divx on the ipod/iphone/ipod touch it would be amazing, they nearly lost my business with not having Divx, I have so many TV shows/films in that format its a total waste to have 2 versions of everything.

Also why does the dock that comes with the iphone not work with a classic?!!!! Why do I have to buy a new dock that works with both?! No dock supplied with the classic, and no case. They used to be but Apple lowered the price of the unit by taking away the accessories and now charges extra so in real terms its just as expensive.

As with all Apple stuff there good products but its so clear whats coming in the next version as they leave blatant features out.

Great price for this ipod, voted hot! I got mine last year for £180 and it was only 30GB. Mind you, I will never manage to use it all. Great ipod. :)
