Can someone tell me what the difference between the 1st and 2nd gen is - I know it is cosmetically slightly different but what about functionality? I'm pretty sure the hardware buttons were introduced too for 2nd gen?

cheers,
dan

Upgraded software v 2.1, volume control on the actual unit. I think thats it. The new software, v 2.1 is £5.99 to download from Apple so you can update 1st gen Touch.
#4
I also think that the battery life is an improvement over the first generation
#5
new and better batteries can always be obtained from ebay and the like.
Very easy to fit
#6
they always say buy apple stuff on the 2nd model as major bugs are usually wiped out i heard the 2nd ver has been cracked anyways id wait for the google version much cheaper...

It's got a built in speaker (useful for games), and also a built Nike+ receiver if you like running.

I love my 2nd gen touch.

Are you sure it's very easy to fit????? there are no screws at all at the back of the ipod touch. How do you open it huh?
#17
Its an Apple, so use a peeler.
#18
perfect for watching tv on?

heh
#19
TV shows, podcasts, playing games.

For the 1000000th time, you only need to pay for the firmware upgrade if you bought a Touch before the app store came out. This Touch, as well as any other first gen touch bought since the app store came out will have free upgrade to the latest firmware.
#21
im gna say cold considering the 2nd gen is 40 more. 2gen is slimmer lighter has volume control on side (built in speaker good for games) much better battery, fixed bugs obviously from new firmware.

its really not worth buying a first gen and not at this price anyway, maybe £99 .

erm no you dont, if your still on a firmware before 2.1 just download the 2.1 ipsw for the touch and do a dfu restore.

You stick a thin plastic blade in the join and work your way around the unit (usually you need to "click" the two parts into each other first to get inside), then gently pull apart the 2 pieces. It's actually quite tricky and very easy to damage the inside workings. I've only worked with replacing batteries for the 1-4th Gen iPods so can't go into specifics but they seem to get harder and harder to do. Not worth doing unless your battery is as good as dead in my opinion.

I would agree. I have the 2nd Gen Touch and use the inbuilt speaker for Games, Music and Videos so wouldn't be without it. Great for showing folk stuff without having to faff about with headphones.

The 2nd Gen iTouch also comes with some Apps included which would cost extra on the iTunes stores such as Air Sharing which turns the iTouch into a wireless hard drive and allows you to view many different file formats including PDF files.

I also have Nike+ kit so great to have it built into the iTouch. Only problem is that my Nike Amp watch dosn't remote control the iTouch.

I have had loads of iPods and the 2nd Gen iTouch is by far the most useful and well featured model I have owned. I carry it with me most of the time which i have never done with my other iPods.

Beware!! The offer here doesn't include headphones. The Refurb from apple store does along with the USB cable. Bought a refurb last week, excellent condition with all accessories.

I'm hanging on for the 2nd Gen, it's overall better in features

I wouldn't worry, ipod headphones worth about 5p and should be put in the bin with the rest of the plastic packaging (oops I meant recycled before the enviro nutters have a go):p

Dixons tax free at airports have the 2nd gen touch for £144, handy if anyone is flying soon. Probably cheaper than the USA.

I would expect it to have headphones too seeing they are bundled with the ipod when new - but it clearly states that they don't in the technical description (which i guess must be wrong but who knows!)
