Good one thanks grudge! I always forget to look at Currys etc for Apples so good spot :)

It would be an even better deal applying the voucher code against the £750 Macbook. The Black is insignificantly faster and has a Superdrive for £200 extra.

Actually in Macbook line, there is another White Macbook which cost much less than the Black one. It has the same processing power, RAM and SuperDrive but lesser hard disk capacity (60GB instead of 80GB).. this White Macbook is priced at £899. Still cheaper than the discounted Currys's price.

I'm fully aware of the MacBook specs I'll be buying one when Leopard ships.

My point was really that the entry level model is excellent value as Macworld and MacUser have both pointed out - and even better with this voucher. Don't forget the HDD is easily swappable and a 100Gb one will cost ~£100 or less. Very good value indeed.

It's also worth a mention that if you have any connection with education, eg teaching or even just have a relative in study then give the Apple store a ring and they may very well be able to offer you a sizable discount.

... and pay VAT as you bring it in? Nice if you don't need to but for most of us ...

The education discount mentioned above can be up to 15%.

You're welcome, I didn't realise they sold them myself.. I only noticed them when I was looking for something else. I usually go with known Mac retailers or the Apple Store. Over a £100 cheaper is a good deal though :)

Agreed Tenex, the reason I chose the black one was because it's the top of the MacBook line, and the only model where the Currys original price is cheaper than the Apple Store. So a further saving of £30.

Same model is £967.03 in the Apple UK Education Store. Another idea - If you're travelling abroad to the USA you could buy the apple out there on your credit card - $1499 (Apple.com store). When I last used my credit card a couple of weeks ago the £/$ rate was quite favourable (around 0.53 which is approx £794.47 GBP). Some states have local sales tax - so be careful of this as it is as high as 9%!

Those wanting to buy 1st generation MacBooks might like to check out http://www.macbookrandomshutdown.com. There is a problem that means that the machine randomly shuts down without warning. I understand that this problem is very likely to still plague new MacBooks you buy today.

I bought mine in August and it's already been back to Apple twice since I bought it to address this issue, both times for a week. As you'll see from the link above, I'm not unique.

These are fantastic machines, but this bug is highly annoying. If I were buying a new one now, I'd wait until the 2nd generation machines are released. They are expected in the next few months.
