Not a deal, should be under Misc.

Not a deal, should be under Misc.

I think there should be a separate area for product releases such as this and concert tickets announcements as they aren’t deals in any sense. Otherwise I wish the mods would move them to misc. I tend to vote cold as a matter of principle to discourage them from being in the deals section.
#3
Fair play... yeh there should be a pre-release, pre-order, product release section.
#4
yes it is a deal, they've miss priced the pre order cost on checkout .. its £300!!!

just kidding.. voted cold cold cold

Would love one of these, so beautiful.

This would never be popular on here for the fact that I've seen hoards of people buy clippers to cut their own hair and most of the average posters wardrobe comes from Play.com clothing sales. HotUKDeal users are obvious to spot on the street with that combo of a penatartionary cut and david brent tshirt.

i don't normally post here but that was by far the funniest post ever... p.s mac book air = amazing

It's £900 in the USA... What a great deal it is for us to pay "only" £1200 in the UK!

Its £1,031.65 using my discount - which is tempting - really tempting... think i will stick to my plan of getting a macbook though. i just dont need something that portable & sexy! ;-)
Plus being in UK we dont get the wireless coverage and speed that the air needs to be fully functional to the max. I think in the US and Japan it will be awesome, but with our 2meg broadband speeds it just wont fly like it should!

:-D  Yeah, but why would they ever spend that much on a proper computer when they can “get the same thing for a 3rd of the price from Dell”.

I mean what with their cheap as chips computer from Dell/Medion/Advent/etc. (the computing equivalent of syphilis) and TV's from Tescos (ooo it's HD and comes on 2 for a fiver, so it must be chocked full of awesomeness :whistling:) they're pretty much kitted out for life.......right.......:p

Paying recommended retail price is not a hot deal...its a cold cold cold cold cold deal

Apple could sell it for £2000 and the sandal wearing Guardian reading zealots would still buy it...

Already been posted up before. That it was so cold it sunk to the bottem of the freezing sea lol.

Sony X505VP weighed only 822g, compared to the MacBook Air at 1.36kg. The Sony X505VP was just as slim and far lighter almost four years ago.

No full size keyboard, tiny and useless 10.4" screen, **** spec even for the time and cost £2k when new. If you are going to get on your high horse at least compare like for like.

Ok so it's not a "Hot Deal" as it's the RRP, but it's a gorgeous machine made to compete with the likes of the Sony Vaio TZ series, which it does very well for a very competitive price.

Bare in mind this is almost 4 years old! Im pretty sure Sony could do a lot better if they kept updating this model. You have to remeber the rules of PC's that price decrease by half every 18 months or less with all these aggressive pricing lately from intel vs amd and nvidia vs ati.

They did, they are called the TZ series now. http://vaio.sony.co.uk/view/ShowProductCategory.action?site=voe_en_GB_cons&category=VN+TZ+Series and are the MacBook Air's main competition...:whistling:

You have to remember that people demand more now, built in Wireless, built in Bluetooth, Longer battery lives, etc. The X505VP only had a 2 hour battery life despite having no built in wireless, a tiny 20Gb HDD and a much smaller screen than the modern equivilents etc. http://www.trustedreviews.com/notebooks/review/2004/06/03/Sony-VAIO-VGN-X505VP-Ultra-Slim-Notebook/p4

Now I happen to think that Sony make some very nice machines (the SZ's in particular http://vaio.sony.co.uk/view/ShowProductCategory.action?site=voe_en_GB_cons&category=VN+SZ+Series), but you're just not comparing Apples to Apples (excuse the pun), if you don't understand something don't comment on it and particularly don't bad mouth it.

Sorry but as this is just the retail price it is not a deal. :-(
I love Macs and I have used them for years but this has to be about the worst Apple laptop ever. Let's see - only one USB2, no ethernet, no FireWire, no optical drive, non-user replaceable battery, small HD, lower spec than normal MacBooks and, it's much more expensive. Oh! It is a bit thinner and lighter. Big deal! I think I'll be able to resist its good looks without any difficulty.

You have to remember these things are aimed at people who need something light to carry around with them that has a good battery life. Playing the latest games or plugging in a million and one paripherals isn't as important as portability to these people, there's a huge market for this kind of thing it's just not you that they're aimed at .

Sony needed to expand on the VP series with todays technology(like what apple used in their macbook air). As the TZ series is a revise sperate thicker model.
But then again Sony is known for its over pricing on its PC's and laptop range anyway;-)

Over the years I've had three desktop Macs and three laptops. In fact I'm using a MacBook right now. As far as I'm concerned every Mac I've had has been excellent value for money and had fulfilled its purpose extremely well. Please do not insult me by inferring that I do not understand at whom the MacBook Air is targeted. Unfortunately the MacBook Air has lost too much functionality in the effort to be slim and stylish and I believe that most people will buy a laptop with more features and give the MacBook Air a wide berth. Just take a browse around the Mac forums and you'll find a lot of disappointment being expressed about the MacBook Air and this reflects my view of this product. In my opinion the MacBook Air is very likely to bomb for Apple just like the Cube did. Now, if it cost £300 it would be a different matter. ;-)

They were dropped because people didn't want a 10" screen on a laptop, it's too small. The TZ's are the nearest modern equivalent being Sonys smallest portable laptop (obviously not counting the super small UX's which are a whole different market alltogether) and hence the best Sony product for proper comparrison to the MacBook Air.

Whoa, steady on there. No insult intended :). All I'm saying is you wouldn't want one (which you don't) because you're not the target market (which you're not). At no point did I say you don't know what that market is .

Although I think you'll find many of those those die hard mac fans moaning on the forums are mostly just sore because they'd been waiting for the rumoured MacBook Pro update (Penryn etc.) and the Air's never going to appeal to a MBP buyer. But for a long long time before MacWorld those same forums (9to5mac, macrumors etc.) had been crying out for an ultra portable SSD MacBook with multi-touch, which is exactly what they got.

Besides only time will tell how clever or stupid Apple have been with the design of the Air. I think if anything it's probably a bit ahead of it's time, give it a few years and we'll all be saying "why would you need an optical drive".

Ouch! what an icy response.

It is only a deal in that if you order now there is a better chance you will get one than if you wait and find that UK supplies have dwindled to nothing, which those who have experience of Apples previous high-end new releases will know is par for the course... which reminds me, where can I get a Wii? Might wait for the new one, Wii-Wii.

I just got an email about it so I thought I'd share it with the rest of the MacHeads who use hotukdeals. Its a nice bit of Mac Porn for us Apple users. Frankly, I'd like a smaller screen version with a smaller solid-state disk that would be the bees-knees for writing on and presenting pitches as well as being super-portable, and certainly not at this price! But I know a few Creative Directors who will already be exercising their credit cards to get hold of one of these.

The interesting features of this new MacBook is the introduction of LED screens and Solid State disks, can't wait to see what colour reproduction is like and is the disk therefore instant booting? Wow. Longer battery life is also a real plus as these features will hopefully spread to the other MacBooks as options.

The US price differential has always been there with Apple and us Apple users have always been p*ss*d off about it - It would please us all if the EU would do something about businesses that exploit currency differences as a means of charging a premium to EU citizens/UK subjects.

I'm not going to make any further comment about the MacBook Air. I think I've made my opinion about it perfectly clear. ;-)

Take a look at this writer's first impressions of the MacBook Air here - http://www.macworld.co.uk/blogs/inde...d=313&blogid=2

And, have a look at an early pole of what Mac users think of it - http://www.macworld.co.uk/polls/inde...ll_submit=Vote

Now make up your own minds whether it's a good deal or not. ;-)

I agree with you, I think this will be a lot better laptop in somewhere like korea or japan where the internet speeds are blisteringly fast, meaning you can just as easily send 4gb of information as burn it to DVD. I think this laptop is pretty much all about show and nothing else

Doesn't matter what Apple bring out, someone will moan about it, if it's what you need then all good if it's not then you'll get dissent, you can't please all the people all the time, with Apple it's about pushing limits in design and technology, you get what you pay for, well designed, well built products (talking comps now not ****** ipods or phones), I'm atm using a old G4 (Graphite with Apple 15" LCD (ADC) as I type and 6 yrs on it still works as it should and still looks better than most comps I've seen.

Considering the Cube is still used and upgraded today 7 yrs after its introduction wouldn't consider that a bomb for Apple.

I think this laptop is pretty much all about show and nothing else

Some people just can't see past beige.

Maybe if it's not got enough spec for you, you might prefer this:

Now now we all know you can "prove" just about anything with a few web links, but you could at least post some links that work :whistling: and some more varied sources would be nice too....

Anyway in that spirit of links prove everything here are a few more:

PC Pro, that's right the notoriously Wintel friendly PC Pro, prefer the air to it's competitors: http://www.pcpro.co.uk/news/155910/macbook-air-vs-sony-vaio-g11.html

C|Net like it: http://crave.cnet.co.uk/laptops/0,39029450,49295091-7,00.htm

In the interests of fairness a pretty balanced opinion here: http://stuff.tv/blogs/future/archive/2008/01/15/macbook-air-first-impressions.aspx

From MacWorld, your favourite source: http://www.macworld.co.uk/blogs/index.cfm?blogid=2&entryid=313

Over 50% of users on MacRumours like it: http://www.macrumors.com/2008/01/16/more-macbook-air-details-and-notes/

Gizmodo like it: http://gizmodo.com/345051/apple-macbook-air-looks-absolutely-amazing

It's amazing what you can “prove” with a few links if you choose the right ones isn't it  and you're perfectly correct we can all make up our own minds, plenty like it, plenty don't. It just seems to me most of those shouting it down would never buy an ultra portable anyway, it's kind of like estate drivers moaning about hatchbacks being too small, they're aimed at a totally different market so to say hatchbacks are **** because you're an estate driver and that's what you want is nonsense, and to say the Air is **** because it's not what you want is similarly daft. You don't want one that's fine but that doesn't mean those that like them are wrong, just that they're after different things.......

Heads up, Asus Eee PC new models will feature screen sizes of 8, 9 and 10 inches with WiMAX. The 9 inch model is supposedly sporting a touchscreen.

This place makes me laugh, some people are very narrow minded. This is not designed to be your main and only computer. It never would be, it is a high spec extremely portable computer.

Also from above, Dell's along with other brands have their place they make reasonably spec'd machines (I think their laptops are good value) at a good price. I have had a couple and are great for normal tasks(as the majority of people do), and no Crysis is not normal memory tasks.

I ain't going to be buying it but it is interesting to see what can be done, and I think it is a glimpse at the future of portable computing.

Indeed, Apple innovates, everyone else just plods along, since the introduction of the original iMac (have one of those here as well, still looks great and works perfectly) some can't seem to handle their success, strange!

I am a lifetime Apple user (both at work and at home) and love these but the lack of a CD/DVD Drive is a mistake on Apples behalf IMO, all very well being able to do a virtual CD/DVD from a desktop machine but a laptop is supposed to be portable.
