Apple TV 2nd Gen £85.00 @ Apple Store

"Apple TV has been redesigned to be small in size but big on entertainment. Rent from a selection of the hottest HD films. And stream photos and music from your computer to your widescreen TV."

-Nice £15 saving if you're considering a media centre especially now this has been jailbroken. Apple refurb products are like brand new and you get a 1 year warranty anyway, if anything does go wrong just get it replaced for free ;)

Was looking for one @ this price. thx
#3
why would you need a new one when it comes with the same warranty...makes no difference at all...
#4
Should put refurb in the title
#5
now that it has been jailbroken, what additional stuff can you do with it?

has a SAFARI app been added so we can browse the web via the ATV?

Can run XBMC now. MKV playback with no need to convert. Google it
#7
Not bad for a streamer than can run XBMC.

There's also the new greenp0ison jailbreak which you can use which differs to the option a6unx has mentioned.
#10
Greenpoison for Apple TV 2 will be supported in a soon-to-come RC6. The current release is RC5.

Cheers for the usb link, can you confirm an external hard drive will connect using this. Also can the unit accept NTFS & Fat32 drives?
#12
You need to install an app called NitoTV to enable external USB support.

some info on how to get NitoTV

And from what I read it supports both FAT and NTFS

Anyone who is planning to purchase this for playing their collection of accumulated ripped movies do a bit of research before plunging in. This is worse than WDTV live / Popcorn hour / Asus HD2 and other network players there for outright format compatibility.
Also it is in medieval times reg audio compatibility. There is no point in watching movies in 1080p with stereo sound. I know this supports 5.1 but not high bit rate anyway.

This is what i found..

When stock.
1) No MKV playback
2) limited audio format compatibility (No DTS HD or DTS HD). Not even decode to stereo.
3) limited to 720p.

After jailbreak and XBMC install
1) No DTS HD or DTS HD Master passthrough. No decoding to stereo, even encoded Ac3 in mkv files have issues.
2) Many have reported issues with high bitrate 1080p playing.

I don't watch rented movies online, so cant comment on that part, but assuming that it would always come from Apple's iTunes store it should be 100% compatible.

I've bought Apple refurbs and they are as good as new - however this thread should be titled as a Refurb!

No 1080p output either,

Expensive piece of dated hardware, but then it is an Apple product :)

WD TV Live... much better. http://www.ebuyer.com/product/179464

Thats the wrong one, you need the new "Micro USB" rather than "Mini USB"
#20
Might as well link your laptop up to your TV via HDMI...saves money, apple tv is poor on quality and quantity of file types it'll play...720p is not good enough for a media streaming device designed for watching movies on. C'mon Apple, 1080p isn't a lot to ask :P

Seriously, who downloads or even watches 1080p content outside of real Blu-ray discs?

I hear people make this argument but absolutely no one i know downloads 1080p and even Sky HD is not 1080p.

At this point in time 1080p is not the norm and it is not necessary

I've read up on this, Apple TV 2 has no USB Host controller and cannot physically communicate to USB drives of any sort. It only works as a client device
#23
I don't suppose if anyone knows whether or not AirPlay will work with XBMC on a hacked ATV? I.e. being able to send media from an iOS device to the ATV.

I'm pretty sure you can access the original ATV apple software even on the hacked ATV2, try here:

TV downloads are almost all 720p, but quite a few films are 1080p blu-ray rips

:| i download 1080p movies as do quite a few people i know. People will begin downloading 1080p more and more as broadband improves and people upgrade their computer technology. so why not think ahead a little.

from a veteran ATV hacker: this unit is alright for XBMC in a second room. has wifi, IR port and optical out, but lacks a 'proper' USB port (too much messing around having to get adapters etc) and has yet to be seen if it can deliver 1080p video playback.

get an Acer Revo in the front room, one of these in the bedroom, just dont buy it as ur number one media centre, as after a few months you'll realise it can't do things that a proper media center machine would

Not sure why this has gone crazy cold? Thought it was a reasonably good deal..

nice, Apple have brilliant video podcasts that are really entertaining and inspiring. you could watch them on your computer but i prefer the Apple Tv.

I have a USB external hard drive. Would i be able to connect WDTV to my TV, then the hard drive with movies to the WDTV and watch that way?

Also how would I go about making the WDTV wireless?

Apple = sytle over substance. With the exception of the iPhone, their products are without exception terrible value.
#35
Voted cold - saving of 6 quid for a refurb isn't a good deal IMO. no comment on the kit itself, if you know what you're getting knock yourself out.

the original appletv is not dissimilar in architecture to a mac mini, it's a full blown computer just with locked down interface but you can hack it to run OSX and even linux. In fact, some hosting companies have used them for dedicated servers!

the latest appletv is pretty much an ipod touch with hdmi video port and no screen; it has an arm processor and cannot run OSX programs without them being ported specially.

Overkill, its a £100 box you can upgrade anytime you like. Downloaded 720p movies look plenty good enough. What a silly way to clog up our bandwidth downloading bloated 1080p rips.

Okay seriously why the cold votes? It's a great price for the product where the ONLY difference to a new one is you don't get a box. If you don't like apple kit that's fine but no reason to vote cold, keep the fanboy stuff to forum flamewars where it belongs.

Me, I've ordered one. At that price it's worth it just as an airplay device and music streaming service to the main living room setup. With xbmc now available as well it becomes a VERY powerful bit of kt for the money. Plus my boss got one for xmbc direct from apple yesterday so it'll make for a fun conversation in work tomorrow. :D

Well its out of stock now, seems like this deal was very much hit or miss!
