First post on here, so be gentle!

This is the Apple TV 40gb device. It's a media streaming/rental device that allows you to view movies stored on your computer through your telly via wifi or ethernet. It supports 480, 720p, 1080i. You can also rent movies online and watch youtube clips while sitting on your settee!
Cheapest price I've seen on the net. I've just ordered one! This price includes VAT and next day delivery! Don't forget quidco for an amazing £3.73 cashback. =)

It's a media streaming device: http://www.apple.com/appletv/
It's normally £199, so this deal saves you £50. Bargain!

Thanks Magic_monkey. I was trying to post that info on here myself but ran into a few difficulties. Thanks!

I thought it was a Mac mini when i spotted the image and £150 too :w00t: lol pity it wasn't ...still its a good deal and so i voted hot  think i'll just stick with the 360 or Ps3 for media center stuff for time being though.

It accepts a very, very limited range of formats, it's really just set up for you to watch movies from iTunes. Your non-iTunes downloaded Lost/Sopranos/etc. episodes and films won't work.

Very overpriced for a very basic bit of kit really, it has been something of a flop.

Overpriced just because it has the 'Apple' label on it....

I've been steaming media from my PC to my TV for years, and cost me a fraction of what they're charging for this.
You can get wi-fi solutions that do the same thing for a lot less too.

For anyone with an old Xbox lying around, you can do much better than this (though perhaps not in terms of having HD output) with Xbox Media Center http://xbmc.org/

It can play an almost unlimited number of formats for both video and audio, you can browse your pictures, use games emulators and stream from your pc/youtube/any internet stream. It's also possible to install a hard drive so you can have all your media stored locally in one box!

Yeh XBMC is better, although it struggles with 720p x264 and you need to change it to NTSC and buy the HD extender pack thing. The apple TV has a h264 hardware decoder so it can play them fine if you get them in the right format, and connect it using HDMI.

You can modify the apple tv to play xvid, stream over samba from windows machines, experts only though:

If you are windows you can use this guide:
http://atv4windows.com/

The apple tv can also easily stream music and photo slideshows from your PC, if you have a big TV and want to enjoy your photos then 150 is a bargain.

nice bit of kit this, shame this deal is a clearence offering........."The products in our Clearance Departments are either ex-display, end of line or customer returns. "
#12
how easy is it to put that hack on?
#13
Here's how you can make it play Divx, Xvid and WMV. http://iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=724
The best thing about the AppleTV is that it is silent in operation, unlike the Xbox solution.

XBMC is a non HD solution, Apple TV is a HD solution.

The apple product gives you a superior level of simplicity + integration with any movies/music stored through iTunes on your main computer.

Apple's new movie rental service allows you to rent movies direct to the device (but it's a US only service for now). You can add plug ins to view formats not supported out of the box (but unlesss you are very comfortable with UNIX + have a mac it will be difficult). This will also handle the next gen of compression, h264 so your dvd rips will look better and take up less space.

I have a 480p plasma so I'm going to stick with my XBMC for now, but the second I get a HD TV I would go for one of these. Oh and while I'm waiting I installed the xTV skin on mine so it looks a bit like the Apple TV interface ;-)

I bought one when someone posted Apple's reburb units for £130. I love it!

Streams/sync movies, tv shows, music, photos and podcasts. Nice menus (I've avoided upgrading to 2.0). Silent unit (although gets very hot).

so can i stream music from this device to my tv?
#17
is this any different to a xbox 360 as that can stream too, how about the ps3 isnt this in the same category/

This device will connect to your TV and allow you to:
1. Stream Movies from your computer to your TV.
2. Stream Music from your computer to your TV.
3. Stream Pictures from your computer to your TV.
4. Stream Podcasts from your computer to your TV.
5. Stream TV Shows from your computer to your TV.
6. Stream Youtube to your TV via your internet connection.
7. Rent movies via your internet connection.
8. Store 40gb worth of movies/pics etc on it's hard drive.
9. I think that's about it.
Go here http://www.apple.com/uk/appletv/ for more info.

If you already have a 360 or PS3 hooked up to your TV then there wouldn't be much use getting one of these to be honest, they do the same thing basically. They're a bit more mac friendly than an xbox is though, for obvious reasons!
