Not if you want far better build quality, Ethernet, 1080p, Optical Audio, Airplay, Airplay mirroring, Netflix, NBA or access to your iTunes library.

For those that require airplay mirroring only an Apple TV would do it. Otherwise I would jump at the numerous cheaper alternatives.

They are absolutely useless

That it absolutely nonsense. Don't exaggerate because you can't be bothered to elaborate your own point.

I'm not the smartest person on the planet, But I am 99% sure I elaborated it quite well on the following sentence of the text you decided not to quote.

Said this a million times before, I own both a Mac and an iPad, I have had two Apple TV's, the second I bought on the thought process I may have been a little premature in selling the first, It only clarified for me why I sold it, They are absolutely useless, I have had more use with a £10 Now TV box with Plex side loaded on it than I ever did with an ATV.

But as I stated previously that is just my personal opinion.

Firstly, nobody's questioning your intelligence. You said how you'd owned two and that they're useless, without giving any explanation as to why they're useless. What about them is useless? I use mine everyday and it functions perfectly for what it was intended for - your sweeping statement that they are useless is not even an opinion - it's nonsense.

In fairness I could simply type "they're crap" and it would be a valid opinion.

Let me bounce the question back to you, outside Mirroring and Netflix, what exactly is the Apple TV any good for?

Crap is an opinion, useless is just plain incorrect. It has many uses (including a paperweight if nothing else).

NBA - I watch 6 hours a week during the season.
Red Bull TV - great free sports network.
YouTube
Vevo

Finally, you say 'apart from Airplay', but I use Airplay a lot - to stream content where there isn't a native app (like BBC iPlayer), or playing music to different rooms in my house.

I'm not saying it's for everyone, I just think your "it's useless" or "it's crap" statements are totally unfair to what is an excellent product (where you have a need for one of the items of functionality I listed in my original post).

Am I being unfair?

great price dont think my local ever has any offers like this
#3
thanks! It was reduced to £74.50 a few days ago, haven't seen it cheaper than £49.50 new anywhere! This suggests to me a new Apple TV is on the horizon but for £50 I'm not complaining!

I know the answer may be on google somewhere, but could someone who has an Apple TV answer:
Does it work independently or does it only mirror an iphone / iPad?
Does it have it's own software built in? Ie, can I upload apps to it etc?
Can I plug my hard drive to it and watch mp4 films?
Thanks

I recently bought a chrome cast. I'm sure it works really well with android phones but I'm getting frustrated with my iphone that a lot of the apps like itv player arnt compatible. Hopefully they will sort out updates soon.

I think they are considered useless because very few media companies dare to deal with Apple.

If you only think of an ATV as a mirroring device for your iOS device it's excellent.
If you think of it as a stand alone media player it's junk.
My one was hardly used. Now I don't have it I miss it but with a chromecast I can do almost as much. Though not sure if Amazonplayer works on ATV it doesn't on Chromecast.

I think how much Apple TV will appeal to you is very much dependent upon the wider system that it's connected to and what you really want from it. I've got one of the second gen versions (I'm assuming the one in the deal is the 3rd Gen 1080 version) and it's been fantastic for me. It's interface is great and it does what I want from it - making the link to iTunes through home sharing and a decent amp etc, it provides instant access to all my music, having Netflix, Vimeo, YouTube, Vevo and AirPlay support along with various other options more rarely used, it just does what I want from it. It's never done anything other than perform brilliantly and can only say that as is often the case with a lot of Apple stuff in recent years, once you buy into the platform (which I know puts some off), it just gets on with the job and does it well. Sure, since I bought mine, more alternatives are available and the leap between 2nd and 3rd gen wasn't enough to warrant an upgrade so I've had no need to change. Sometimes it's easy to get sucked into the tech spec and features (most of which will never get used) and overlook what it's like to experience with day to day real-world usage. I've no intention of engaging with any Apple vs Samsung/Google/whatever pointless 'debates' - just get what's right for you and live and let live. I'm just sharing my Apple TV experience over the years and as this is half what I paid, despite there being the next version due next year, this looks like a bargain to me :)

Come September there will be a new Apple TV platform that's why there discounted at lots of places , I would hold on a bit and see what's coming out
#25
At this price it starts to rival a Roku for netflix use, and will run plex with some messing:

Apparently it's been put back to 2015 thanks to ongoing complications between Comcast and Warner Bros Cable - i.e. content for the next gen platform. You're right though - the next version will undoubtedly be offering more...but it's highly unlikely that they'll be selling them for anything remotely close to £50.

I buy music and films from itunes - I can have access to them all via the library on Apple TV.
I take the majority of my photos with my iphone - I can have access to them all via the Apple TV.
I watch Netflix
I airplay from my iphone, ipad, macbook.

The Apple TV is perfect for what I want and is the only device that will do the job.

I don't suppose anyone wants to talk about the deal? I would like to know whether this has been spotted at more than one store -- my local doesn't stock them.

I'm going to Woolwich Tesco tonight, will report back if the deal is on there.

Can you put XBMC on this version then?

No but you can put Plex on with al ittle work around....I have ATV use it almost exclusively for Plex and love it...I also have a NOWTV with plex....interface not as nice and drops more / has more freeze ups. Sure cheaper alternatives but ATV is quite nice

How do you do this, i've tentatively looked into this and not found a proper way of doing it.

The 3rd Gen ATVs can't be hacked - for Plex or anything else.

As I have all three working I can give a balanced opinion. Roku is by far the best but the Apple has some good features even if it needs resetting sometimes. Chromecast is not fit for purpose and constantly crashes or loses signal if I didn't have it for free I would have returned.
