Arent there any existing devices for less that will do alot more than this is offering? The WD Live TV boxes output 1080p amongst other features and this only do 720p I believe, so after getting all the 1080p TV and freeview HD tvs, we are expected to connect to this..? I am just wondering out loud...good deal for anyone who needs one though..

get WD TV Live, it is 100x better and has many more functions, it can outright play MKV (HD Video) files and you can connect through your PC on the network or simply attach a USB or even an External Hard Drive

Costs more in the UK than in the USA and has a lot less function in the UK, total rip off! and I am an admitted Apple fanboy.

Without Netflix and ability to rent TV shows all you can do with this overpriced brick is stream 'only' apple video formats from your pc (no divx, xvid, mkv, wmv e.t.c e.t.c)and rent overpriced movies from apples own store. Why not just get one of the many other media centres with MUCH more capability?

Once someone hacks it to make it play avi, mkv e.t.c e.t.c, and when an iplayer, lovefilm apps e.t.c get made for it 'THEN' it might be worth buying. Now it is junk.

You can probably get it cheaper on Amazon (that is where I bought mine), or eBay.

This will not likely go up or down in price because it seems to have a standard price that has not gone down since its release, its popularity and abilities are very current and they keep bringing out better ones

If you don't mind paying £199, get a Boxee Box and you won't regret.

I've had the HD Live HD and sent it back to Amazon - too limited compared to Boxee.

You can even download the Boxee software for free and try it on your PC before you buy.

Although I don't like the Apple TV product, I've given you some heat as this is the cheapest price if you need one.

Great price for a pretty useless product.

That may be true, but none of those other devices have a picture of an apple on them, so just aren't cool...

Just got this today from comet full price. Heat added. This is amazing if you've got iPad,iPhones and a massive iTunes library. Setup is beyond easy and the remote apps make this an amazing experience from iPad.

if you dont mind paying £200, I'd have thought the better options were Popcorn Hour or Acer Revo...

These two devices made their glory before the Boxee Box, now Boxee is the king :-)

Give the Boxee software a try and you'll see what I mean.

If you need a dual-purpose device (a PC and Media Centre), I agree the Revo would be a better option, though quite limited when compared to Boxee (considering the Boxee remote with a keyboard on the back, size, noise,...etc etc).

The WD TV Live is miles, miles better than this Apple device. But at the same time, for those people with significant content on iTunes (and who don't also pirate things), then the Apple TV is better for them. For others of course it's just a case of being an Apple fanboy/sucker and going for looks/UI over functionality/hardware.

If you want to pay for movies/tv shows etc then this is for you. If not and you want Full HD support (Blu ray, HD DVD rips etc) then it is a serious waste of money.

My bro has WDTV player and I have AC ryan playon HD mini. Both are great media devices!

Not a massive amount in it once you take Sales Tax (up to 10% in CA) and currency exchange.

BBC and Lovefilm are currently developing for the ATV, 1080p playback will be on the device by the time 4.5 rolls in July/August.

This is a better option than the wdtv or other options, as long as you are already bought into the apple ecosystem!

Bring able to rent films and playing them easily on your tv, using airplay to send videos from your iPhone/iPod touch, using your iPhone/iPod touch as a remote ect, it's a great little device
#29
I refuse to buy this until Apple allow 1080p.

Spoke to an Apple reseller recently through work who told me you can, I already have a Mac mini running Plex (which eats boxee for breakfast) otherwise I'd be seriously looking into doing this, and if it can be done would be an awesome media center for under a 100 quid.

Cold for me WD HD Live is cheaper and with better codec support, only for foolish must have everything with an Apple on it!

These are great little boxes. My first generation is four years old and still going strong. Hacked to give it more features using ATV Flash in a couple of minutes using a USB. It's the best way to browse your movie collection even compared to the PS3's I own.

Only negative would be no MKV support. I convert 720p rips using handbrake's Apple TV preset so they'll play on all my iDevices. iPhone, iPad, Macs over the network. Quality is still great on big and small screens.

Your not voting for how good the system is your voting for how good the deal is and the fact that it is £10 cheaper then anywhere else makes it hot

This is a small part of my acquired media collection, shared with wireless N. streams flawlessly. Fun for all the family.

iFlicks is great for dropping a movie or tv show into and auto tagging it. http://www.iflicksapp.com/

not quite the same, but you could get an xbox arcade for the same price. Stream media from home machines, phones etc, has apple aac support and have access to streaming and downloadable movies, music etc. at pretty much the same costs. And play games. And 1080p.

obviously larger and louder, but a worthwhile alternative - doesn't have as wide a codec support as the wdlive or AC type boxes though.
#39
Overpriced and underspecified. WD Live box is good, but the new Sony streamer is far better than the Apple, with loads of free content and 1080p playback. The PS3 style menus are well designed and it will play just about any file format through the USB port. Review:

I've mainly bought mine to link with my iTunes library and I have an iPad already and controlling the box by using the iPad remote app looks superb. If no cop I will sell on, no drama. Shoul also be easier for the wife to flick through photos and put movies on for the kids as the UI looks better than any others I've seen.
