Very tempted by this as my original 1st generation iPod has just given up the ghost, but I can afford a iTouch just yet! Nice little stop gap - H&R added!!!

Before anyone else gets the chance to say it - don't forget Quidco - 6% cashback!!! Takes it down to £19.73
(Cashback on mymemory is 10% for computer games and R4 products)

Nice find, wanted to look for a reasonable cheap MP3 player for my daughter without the bells and whistles, this seems ideal. Ordered.

Good find

Cant really go wrong with this player at a bargain price. Known brand, decent spec (i.e. the range of audio formats supported + 4 Gb memory) and a neat minimalist design. Only thing missing is a spring clip as per the ipod Shuffle and Sansa Clip+. Not a dealbeaker though. I've ordered one and if nothing else, it will come in as a spare. Heat and rep given.
#14
would this play videos/films?

it says it comes with video conversion software, so you could possibly have just the audio from a video file? perhaps?

awesome player for the spec. I don't think this will be going lower so buy now if u need one.

mine just arrived, on the back of the box it says it supports .avi so im going to have a play around

-----------------------

Well im very happy with this as a player and for the cheap price. My previous player was a cheapo 4gb mp3 so the capacity of the archos is fine for my needs. File transfers are quick and easy, you still have to 'remove device safely' but thats fine.

Music is laid out as you'd expect with the standard search options genre, artist, title etc also have the option of playing a lyric file for the respective song instead of the graphic equaliser visual which is quite good.

Image viewing is about what you would expect for a 1.5" screen so it doesnt yield a huge amount of worth, although im pleased to confirm that it does play video files, Archos provide software to convert your video to the correct resolution (i think its 128x128) as with the image viewer it depends on what youre viewing as the blacks dont hold out too well but its great to see it at least has this functionality given that it wasnt exactly advertised.

The final piece i am interested in is its ability to display .txt files, the file is displayed as white text on a black background and is clear and crisp, im interested to know what file size your average book would be in .txt format as this could be used as a form of e-reader, although obviously skipping through thousands of tiny pages to get to where you last were isnt ideal it could suit those on train journeys or those who dont exactly want to carry their e-reader out and about.

All in all im already very fond of this archos and hope you all enjoy receiving yours as much as i did mine

Being able to play video files makes this player a steal.
Thanks for that.
#27
Yeah it has a video convter on it, the screen is tiny tho
#28
Got this today & it really is quite outstanding value. Plays MP3, WMA, WAV, FLAC and APE; all the formats most people could ever need (hm, no M4B, though that's not an issue for me). If there's an LRF file it even displays lyrics.
My 9-year-old loves the video feature. Using the included software I have converted a bunch of Horrid Henry AVIs. Using high quality compression, they go from 120Mb to 40Mb. As the screen is so small, I could probably save space & use medium quality. Source files may be AVI, MP4, H264(!), M4V, DIVX, MOV.
The only downside (if you can call it that) is that it's very light. Personally I would prefer a slightly heftier piece of kit. But, as I say, this is a personal preference rather that a failing.
And at £21 for a 4Gb device, this is the best value MP3 player I have ever seen.
Thanks again to the OP.

Received mine today and my initial impressions are that this mp3 player is a remarkably competent piece of kit. Music sounds good, the software is well thought out and implemented and the 9 minute video demo provided, plays well on the dinky little screen - might even try using it. The construction and finish of the plastic case feels quality. The only omission is possibly the lack of an fm radio, but hey , for less than £20 delivered, who cares? Not tried the supplied earphones yet and l dont intend to. I've not known an mp3 player yet that isnt improved by my Sennheiser cx500's. My favourite mini player is still the Sansa Clip+, but the Archos 1 runs it very close at getting on for half the cost. Recommended.

ADDENDUM: Having had a bit more time to explore the Archos 1, unless i'm missing something and i am happy to be corrected, , the music playing software has no provision for playlists. The instruction leaflet makes no mention of the subject. I dont use them myself, preferring a specific album or more usually 'random play all'. However, if it is important to you then best check it out first before you commit. Hope it helps.

when you turn this off it doesnt go back to the song that you were listening to can anyone else confirm this
1 Like #37
When you power 'off' and then 'on', it doesn't resume playing music but defaults to the 'Music' option screen.

However
1) click the centre right button >II to get the music option list
2) then press the top left left button once I<< , it scrolls the menu up to a menu option on the screen called 'breakpoint player' click on that option and it returns you to the point in the music that was playing at the moment then resumes playing.

Hope you can follow it. ;-)

This looks a good deal....1 question.....does anyone know if this can be used in-car (transmitted to radio)?

You will need a wireless transmitter, like this one. Or one of these. More here.

Better yet, replace your old radio with a new CD/MP3 player for ~ £50 - £60. They tend to have a 3.5mm input for your MP3 player and some even sport USB ports.
