£40 for a brand ive never heard of? Is this the going price for mp3s then, seems expensive.

Any chance of me picking up a decent 4gb mp3 for nearer £20?

:?Archos is an established and respected brand. Don't think you'll get what your looking for on your budget but occasionally cracking bargains do raise their heads. Patience is the key.

Archos is a very well and respected established brand , so really if you havent heard of them then you know pretty much nothing about audio systems , especially of the portable type ( no offence intended )

But If you can find the sandisk fuze brand of mp3/4 players they are a step above , having owned quite a few including that overhyped white thing that was terrible the sandisk fuze i have is top class.

Voted hot on the price and the brand , but if you can find the Sandisk you wont regret it.

Check ebay for imported mp3 players upto 16 gig for around £20, the manufacturing quality isnt great but the audio playback isnt bad if you change the headphones, and for a general cheap mp3 player they cant really be beaten. If you want something of quality then spend a few more ££'s

Archos - well known - fairly. Well respected - I think not!

Archos are a decent brand and their MP4 Video players get good reviews
Like this one for example - http://reviews.cnet.co.uk/digitalmusic/0,39029995,49292004,00.htm

Their MP3 players don't usually score aswell but I wouldn't dismiss them. They're cheaper than Ipods (as are most mp3s players..) and they do a fairly decent job.

Voted warm.

I am with you on this. Archos make some really clever stuff but heaven help you if anything goes wrong with it. In my experience, their customer service has been appalling.

RESPECTED? Sorry but you seem to have taken a right turn at Albuquerque and now currently reside in the wrong dimension. Archos are the company who nickel and dime you at every turn from making you pay for every damn cable that you will even need to even charging you for CODECS in order to play media on the hardware which they supply! They make Apple look generous.

And lets not even talk about their POS equipment. Lets instead show PHOTOS . Thats some guys Archos where the battery has expanded and Archos have said "Well nothing to do with us!". At least with my Archos it just died....after 3 months...and I was told "tough".

Sorry, Archos are one of THE WORST manufacturers I've ever encountered for service and if my experience with their hardware is anything to go by, the are shovelling s***. Touch them with a 10 foot barge pole at your peril (and you HAVE been warned)

I bought the archos 605 wifi 160gb for £99 a while ago (year ago) and it was great (apart from the extra fees archos wanted for damn codecs and internet) and the battery then wouldn't hold a charge. I sold it on ebay for £200. I would be weary about archos products.
#13
Nothing wrong with this, however I would pay the extra and get a fuze IMHO if you want audio quality.

These do also have expandable memory though, which is always a bonus.

Agreed 100% about their customer support. The problem is that thay have a third party doing CS and not Archos themselves. I have 3 Archos product including the Gmini 220 (MPS player and picture viewer) which I have had since 2004 and all are still working.

So Mr Snatch, how do you really feel about Archos ?:)
BTW cheaper here if anyone interested and in a variety of colours http://www.dixons.co.uk/martprd/store/dix_page.jsp?page=ProductList&chain=Dixons&channel=WEB&browserName=ie&browserVersion=6&platform=pc&use_category=true&deeplink=true×tamp=09:14:37&category_name=/Specials/MP3%20and%20MP4%20Players

Mrbandersnatch .. your item will have been covered by uk buying law , you should have contacted trading standards , as for it dying within 3 months , surely you must know goods have a 12 month warranty and whether archos said tough or not TS would have ripped them to pieces.

Long story short - bought from ebay, seller is none-responsive, Archos insist we have to go via the reseller. Cheaper actually to buy a replacement unit than sort out dispatch and repair.

TBH even if the seller handled the repair, we would probably end up being billed though. The unit in question was a 705. This actually a generation 5 unit but with product numbering designed to make you think you are buying the latest machine when you're actually getting one servel years old [no I wasn't suckered by this one - knew I was buying an older model]. The design on this model places the power connector right next to the AV connector and uses exactly the same sized holes for both. So one day of course, I put the power into the AV socket.....it did work afterwards (for a month) but it was decidedly....unhappy. :whistling:

Now at this point, your going "MORON", however the more cynical amongst you will know that, just as Archos call a generation 5 unit a "70X", that a design decision such as putting your power and AV sockets next to each other and making them the same size....well you REALLY don't do that sort of thing by mistake.

Only 10 hours music play back from a single charge!

Most of the Sony's can manage 35 hours.

Why wern't you around to save me from buying a 5g a month ago?!

My 5g has been booted more times than a football. It's constantly having to be reset. You can't have it running on the battery and then plug in a power supply (through a stupidly designed, non standard USB port) without a crash. You can't watch a movie without a crash. Don't even think about walking around with it. Anything more that the vibration of a butterfly landing on a leaf on the other side of the planet and it needs a reset. The codec situation is deplorable; Archos say it's to make it user configurable, we can personalise our units with the codecs we want. WTF? You buy a media player to play media not have to spend extra to get it to do what it should out of the box.

3 years ago I bought a 30gb Archos AV500. Great piece of kit that has been around Europe and America with me. It's not perfect but it did it's job admirably. That's why I bought the 5g but I am seriously regrettingthe purchase now. It's absolutely awful and has put me off buying any other Archos product forever. I'm keeping the AV500 and will use this until it dies but the 5g is destined for flea bay.

Archos have some great ideas but their design and testing teams are woefully inadequate. I feel sorry for anyone who has dealt with their version of Customer Service as they even make OCUK look like a good firm.

As for this deal for the MP3 player, simply because it's Archos I would avoid it and look elsewhere.

I have had an AV500 100gb for years , still to see a better screen on any portable out today , great machine

[QUOTE=hugh3sy7]I am offended, not. I know quite a bit about home sound systems so am surprised but ill leave you to your gadgets

Your the one looking at a "gadget" which is a portable music/media player and archos have been around for some time and generally have an article in at least one of the "HI-FI" mags when a model is produced , also the internet is a wondeful source of information if you dont know the brand. Enough sources for someone who "knows" about home audio to make a decision.

Mr Bandersnatch obviously a design flaw on behalf of archos there , and some ebay sellers are a right bunch of numptys which is a shame . Otherwise im sure you'd have been happy if it had been replaced.

Codec bundles can be bought off Ebay for a lot less than Archos want.
#25
RRP £39.99, not much of a saving, still voted hot cos it will be a damn fine player. I bought my daughter an Archos 105 about a year ago from Currys for £19 odd, very impressed with it.

Not an expert but generally if im looking for something and see a deal like this one i will look on google for some reviews and alternatives, it just helps make sure you get the right product for your hard earned cash.

I dont see what i do with my days off has to do with the deal ??

Oh I didn't buy the codecs or the internet I used an exploit to get them.

I have this player in White and I can't praise it highly enough. You can add more memory with micro SD cards which is brilliant. A similar spec player from Apple would probably cost 3 times this and force you to use itunes where this is a simpler drag and drop player.

Superb!

Don `t buy an imported mp3 player off ebay as someone said . They rarely have the capacity they say , terrible advise.

forgive me for speaking but i found this last week through pixmania and also posted the amazon price- see link below........

http://www.hotukdeals.com/item/472538/archos-archos-2-8gb-mp3-player-blac/?p=6189828#post6189828

so to see it posted by some one else and it now reeceiving more hot temp is kinda funny.....

well at least it cheered me up for the utter madness that no one else spotted it last week...

lol.. cold added due to me spotting it last week....
#32
by the way i am quite upto date on archos sansa, and ipod players etc.... i have 5 archos players and numerous others...lol... have to admit the customer service is terrible, they ahrdly ever respond to emails or support offers....

but in all the time I have had the players only one ever went back for a faulty dead pixel, and that can happen in transit.

I would recommend getting the optional codec packs off third parties, but you will find bundled deals if you shop around. And if you do have a problem with converting movies or video files on the system then you know where I am for assitance.....

Just make informed decisions and shop around the forums for one specific to your needs.....

good luck in whatever you choose to buy...

sorry for any misunderstanding-I do check amazon always before posting deals, though at the time I seem to recal the amazon deal was slightly higher.

As far as I am aware the person that replied to my original post and posted the amazon price was pat-w, I didnt put the price match up at the time, since I didn't think it was as good a buy as the pi*mania deal, and think it had not gone down in price.

bearman keep up the good posts, we are all here to show the deals...

good luck on deal hunting and posting :)

I must admit I do personally prefer amazon over pixmani* as I tend to go for better customer service rather than the last few pound or pence.

you did well spotting it again at a lower price, and now it gets heat, though I love archos I shall look at other companies since from personal experience their customer service is very poor.

cant wait till they get their act together, at that point I would rate them 5star too.
