I agree, most stuff I watch on my 504 is widescreen, with the 404 there would be black top and bottom.

Good find tho  to OP

They have got like new 80gb ipods on ebay for under £170, wouldn't that be a better bet?

£133.16 at Dabs.com, i was looking at these a couple of weeks ago. Cracking price for the 504 though!

These supposedly beat the iPods hands down for video, bigger screen, better compatibility and with a £50(ish) add-on you can record TV straight onto the device!
The iPod is more portable though and just a bit better for music, so you need to weigh up what you'd rather have.

I didnt bother with either in the end, my mobile phone contract expired so i got a free music mobile to tide me over for a while. I'll buy an Archos when/if they support HSDPA and all the nifty features that will come with that (mobile IPTV?)

It has already been posted on this forum that Currys sell the Archos 504 80gb for £229.99 which is a good price. I can vouch for the quality of the Archos screen having owned one for 6 months. It's a beauty. Films like Finding Nemo and the Shrek movies look really good on it. It's also a good MP3 player but a bit too bulky to use for walking around listening to music. I used DVD decryptor and PocketDivX encoder to convert and compress my DVDs for the Archos. The TV recording feature is also good if a little cumbersome to set up.

I am very surprised that you imply the 504 screen is good. Compared to the older AV500 it is appalling. I took mine straight back to Currys for a refund the screen was so poor. Replaced it with a Gmini 500 which has a far, far superior screen.

Out of stock I know but really is it that good'er deal?

I was actually basing my opinion on the screen of my Archos 500. I assumed the screen was the same one on the newer 504 as it has identical specs to mine (ie. 4.3'' TFT (480X272 pixels) 16/9, over 16 million colors) so I don't see why it shouldn't be as good.

I did not expect the new model to be inferior to the previous models either. I thought I was upgrading but it really was very poor compared to the previous ones. I think Archos have made one economy too many with this inferior screen.

anyone know when the Archos 704 80gb player with Wifi & 7inch screen is released in the UK and how much it will cost?

Going to wait for that one

Early 504/604's had some red-spot or blurring video issues, which were tweaked by firmware updates, but most recent comparisions seem to say that the quality's now fine in comparison, although the 504 might well be less bright than the AV500 was - e.g. http://forum.archosfans.com/viewtopic.php?p=18453#18453

Not having had an AV500 to compare with, mine's always struck me as having had no problems!

Exactly my thoughts r.e album covers, just like the thumbnail display for the photos. Dont bother emailing archos and suggesting this, their CS is totally crap.

I missed out on the Grundig MP4 deal a few months ago (£100 for very similar specs) - anyone know how this compares to the Grundig MP4 player for quality?

Why you bothered about the grundig? They are all sold out everywhere.

I bought one from the grundig site and it lasted 3 weeks! Great little all-in-one device but had a fault (would not power up). Tried to get a replacement or at least a repair but alba/goodmans just refunded me.

Went out and bought the archos 504 and it is far better in terms of screen and build quality, albeit twice the price! Once you add on the dvr station and the other license's for AC3 playback etc the price soon shoots up!

The grundig was a great item for the money.
