great little devices, 2gb way too small for me although it does state that it has a memory card slot for expansion so could be useful for somebody.

the 2GB Archos portable media player can hold up to 1000MP3 tracks, 20,000 photos or 2 movies. SD card slot for additional memory storage.
Product detail

* Storage capacity: 2 GB
* Battery life: 16(music)/5(video) hours
* Carry case included: Yes
* Dimensions: 7.8x9.9x1.3(H/W/D)cm

Shame it is not the 30GB version.

2GB is just not enough for video and as an mp3 player it's probably a bit too large.

this is well hot imo.
#3
Somebody does not like Archos the last 2 Archos threads have been deleted.
#4
thats a shame, but yes seen other threads ruined by the cold voters. 2gb true isnt too big, but its nice to have the option of a expandable memory option. these use to be in the region of £100 odd and the picture quality is second to none.

Why cold voting? This is no iPod, geddit?

Added some heat to the thread although I hate Archos' policy of payable addons.

Exactly, it's a product stuck in-between worlds. Pretty useless imo.

so it doesnt play divx? :w00t:

If it's like other Archos then it's a £20 software add-on to play avi
#9
If I got their spec right, then AVI is playable as standard:

MPEG-43 ([email protected] AVI, up to DVD resolution)
WMV ([email protected], up to DVD resolution)
With optional software plug-ins (available for purchase on www.archos.com):
- Video Podcast plug-in: H.264 up to DVD resolution and AAC
- Cinema Plug-in: MPEG-2 [email protected] up to 10 Mbps (up to DVD resolution) and AC3 stereo sound (5.1)

(3) (MPEG-4: ISO standard by Moving Picture Experts Group ; AVI: audio/video file container by Microsoft) without GMC and Quarter Pixel and WMV (including protected WMV).

Hmmm, 2GB is a major downer.

Big screen though ... because it's a BRICK. 7.8x9.9x1.3(H/W/D)cm. On the other hand no thief is going to risk their reputation stealing on of these, unlike the lowlife that stole my iPod nano.

No AAC support (according to the website) means it's a nono for anyone that's used iTunes to rip their music if they kept the default, high quality, AAC default for ripping.

No it plays divx as standard.

yeah these will play xvid and divx as standard. You dont have to pay 20 quid for plugins either. One plug in is if you want to listen to 5.1 sound (pretty useless over headphones) the other is for podcasts which i never use either. I've got the 504 but for 70 quid this is a good deal even with the small memory. U can still beef it up with some memory cards. Archos is so much better than the ipod video - no converting video to mp4. They're usually to big as an mp3 player but for video I dont think anything is better.

AWESOME little player/recorder!!

I use this to record downhill mountain biking on my helmet camera, and it's perfect to fit in my hydration pack. definitely worth it if just for that!

voted HOT, but it wont' record at 60hz
#15
Cold you can get alot more for that price
#16
People will still buy it just coz it's an Archos, cold from me
#17
£5 cheaper at Dixons if you want it delivered.
#18
4GB 605 with expandable SD slot = £115 at dixons and amazon. and argos just reduced their 30 GB 605 to £149.99 a few days ago. I wouldn't go for a 405 myself but i guess it's cheap enough...
#19
makes me laugh how the ipod fanboys diss it even tho apple dont do a decent sized screen for video playback (or codec support) and other peeps think of it as an mp3 player.....for the money nothing comes close to this for video playback...the quality of the pictures delivered and the size of the screen are awesome.....do i own one??? no so consider me unbiased

Greeat buy!!!!
I have a 605 and have used it everyday.Use windows media player to sync videos and then it will convert your vids into WMV files, perfect.

I also bought a 8gb card from play.com for 14.99 so cheap to expand memory.

looks good to me, I am looking for a quality player atm, that is not ipod.

voted HOT, but it wont' record at 60hz

Why would you want to do that? There is no gain of 30fps over 25fps.

What the cheapest price for a 605 wifi (4gb) ?

Maybe worth paying a little extra and get the wifi version...but then the 605 is bigger.

Shame Archos does not do a 405 WiFi version.
