First deal so be gentle!!

QVC have the newly launched 405 30GB model as a TSV and it comes with the highly recommended DVR Station which is £70 on it's own!
You can also use easy pay to split the payments into 3 more manageable ones

Does it actually come with the '30Gb' though? reading a review, it has 2Gb internal capacity, and then you can add a SDHC card of up to 32Gb, which sells for around £180 alone - only price I've been able to find, for sandisk ultra ii, most places only stock 16Gb still, but even based on those prices, it'll be £100-120 or more.

The 2gb is the old model, this is the newly released 30gb hard drive model. Cheapest price online is £150 without the DVR, which you will need. You can also get it here on 3 easy payments, interest free.
I already have the 605 and 705!!

watching the presentation on QVC, it seems its got a built in 30gb hard drive....if you order and it hasn't...just send it back under their 30 day returns system...try it out as they say....

Yeah, I liked my AV500, it did have better connectivity, but I much prefer the interface and the docking station on the later models

Shame it's not the WiFi version.

Does the QVC one have all the plugins included ?

I have been a QVC customer for a while, and if they say its 30Gb then I'm sure it will be. They are certainly not in the business of trying to mislead people.

I own both and The Archos isn't a touch on The Touch........ (no pun intended)..........

Stick with your iPod......

Cheers for the info i wasn't going to get rid of the touch just if there was any benefit of the 405 id looked at having that too maybe give it a miss then i think :)

It's a bit of a cheek charging customers to unlock support for file types. You have to pay for the web browser too.

Also, whilst the dvr dock will record tv programmes directly onto the unit, you need to have your Sky or Freeview box switched on and on the channel you want to record - it doesn't do it automatically even though there is an in-built menu that looks as though you are programming the Archos to record. .

If you set up the DVR station properly though, it will change the channels over for you, I know because mine does!

Can you record and play back to the Tv though with the Ipod?. I would say they each have there own merits!
#17
Brilliant. I am using one to record TV programs right now. I bought it from QVC over a year ago for around £250.00 (though mine has the camcorder).

I stand corrected....... I always thought there must be a way of doing this...... Any pointers to how to set it up to do it on a Sky+ box ??

Yes, from the main menu go into Settings / Tv control / Set infrared emitter

settings are

TV receiver - Satellite receiver
Receiver Brand - Pace
Codes - S(676)14/17

Bear in mind that it sends the code out of the front of the DVR station. Mine is set pointing away from the sky magic eye, but the eye still picks it up.

Hope that helps

If you're not too worried about the dvr dock you might be better off with the 650 20GB which can be had for £150 at laskys.com, or the 30GB for £165 from cbccomputers.com.

And fwiw, these really are the best prices in the UK (outside eBay) for the 605. Unless you want a bundle and everything with it, in which case qvc might be good if you can't find a cheap dock. I've been updating a thread on an archos fan site with these for the last year, so if i'm wrong on any i'll be amazed . prices include delivery:

605 wifi 4 GB: £118.40 (29.60 per gb) from dixons.co.uk.

605 wifi 20 GB: £149.00 (7.45 per gb) from laskys.com.

605 wifi 30 GB: £165.18 (5.50 per gb) from cbccomputers.com.

605 wifi 40 GB: £177.90 (4.44 per gb) from dixons.co.uk

605 wifi 80 GB: £183.50 (2.29 per gb) from newmp3technology_uk on amazon.co.uk marketplace.

605 wifi 160 GB: £223.50 (1.39 per gb) from newmp3technology_uk on amazon.co.uk marketplace.

you may be able to quidco some or get vouchers, and officially advancedmp3players.co.uk will price beat them though it's not a guarantee.

actually, they're saving customers money for not adding support for things they don't need/want. additional codecs and browser licensing costs would have driven the price up considerably; just look at other equivalent players that include all that kind of thing by default eg. cowon q5 is ~£450. if you purchase everything you pay pretty much the same as any other player, otherwise you're just saving money by not being forced to have extra stuff included. the only downside is all the extra hardware you have to drag around with you / lose :-(

Pity it's an old fashioned 4:3 screen or I would purchase this...

Great info. What is the fan site you're updating, so I can keep an eye on the price of the 160GB?

The Archos can also do DivX/XviD, which the iPod Touch cannot. Which is basically the majority of TV Programmes you'll find on the internet, not to mention the fact that converting videos to DivX/XviD can save you quite a bit of space. The touch on the other hand requires conversion 80% of the time.

>> I own both and The Archos isn't a touch on The Touch........ (no pun intended)..........

the touch doesn't do flash video (other than on youtube). it doesn't do resolutions above 3xxXsomething. it doesn't do many video or audio codecs. it doesn't record. it is twice the price.

it *does* have a fancy, useful, easy to use input mechanism. it does have plenty of apps. it does have an accelorometer. it does look like an apple product. it has itunes inbuilt. and that's pretty much all it's got over the archos. well, that and wide useage which generally leads to further hacks and apps and optimisations of the hardware usefulness that the archos can only hope to have (so far someone's got the qtopia OS running on it and that's about it). if you just want to listen to music, primarily purchased from apple, quickly and efficiently, and don't care about cost, sure the touch is your man. i'm still waiting for a half price cowon though...

You missed out on the Wifi on the touch which i use quite alot for browsing which the safari browser works much better than any other handheld device i've used and you can get email setup so its automated checking for new mail its very good imo the Touch

I ended up ordering the Archos 405 eventually yesterday after alot of reading up on them as it was a good price and thought the dvr would be quite good feature to have on it that was main feature that i personally noticed that id thought be good that touch didn't actually have.

My cash has been took and Quidco has tracked my order all i need now is for Qvc to actually send it :w00t:

Received mine today. What a great little unit, you don't really appreciate how compact and portable it is until you see it in the flesh, It is truly pocket sized!!. I was only really interested in keeping the DVR station and selling the 405 on, but now that I have it, it's staying.
