This looks like a pretty good deal by itself, but with the free DVR dock (RRP £99.99) which allows you to get the most out of the device, I think it's an absolute bargain. Not many companies making large capacity MP3/MP4 players any more, plus the fact that you can use this as an (albeit basic) Android tablet and also a viable home PVR as well.

Not sure whether my credit card can bear another unnecessary purchase at the moment, but thought it might be useful to somebody.

...and the DVR dock

When considering an iPod, I remember being very interested in this, the only problem was the price of the DVR dock. This deserves to be blazing hot, have some start off heat from me. :)

Struggling to find a proper review on this, has anyone got one & is it worth having ?
#4
Can u get 2.2 on it?

It's only got 256mb RAM.
#5
Not sure whether my credit card can bear another unnecessary purchase at the moment

amen to that - voted hot, but must resist!
#6
As far I can tell it's pretty much identical to the Archos 5 but without the GPS. There seem to be more reviews for the Archos 5 around, most of which should be applicable.

A couple for starters:

Will this play .avi xvid/divx?

Same. If you were able to put a SIM card in it, I would buy one.

I'm voting hot, as it's a good price, but, as an owner of an Archos 605, and an Archos 5 (500GB), I'm never buying Archos again. An iPad/iPhone is so much more versatile and reliable. We bought the Archos 5 to use to keep my son happy on planes, and twice now it has failed to start on a plane, - but works fine in the train/car. He ends up watching his films on my iPhone (that I have on there as I know I can't rely on the Archos. The *killer* with the 500GB, is that it has *very* limited internal memory - something like 256MB or 512MB, and you can only install Apps into the internal memory (Yes, there are hacks, but I don't want to risk bricking it). So once the O/S is running, there is just enough space to install Angry Birds and *nothing* else.

Having said all this, it is an excellent (if temperamental) video player.

Oh, and Archos stop supporting their devices even while they are still in the shops. So don't expect any more upgrades to the O/S, 1.6 will be the last version of Android on these devices, and it doesn't use the 'normal' android marketplace, so not all apps appear. At least Apple still roll out updates for a couple of years afterwards.

Ask yourself, can you see yourself using this in 6 months time.
500GB is great, but 4.8" screen size isn't.
#14
With the dock it looks great, shame that it can't do full HD with it having HDMI, but as most people still have movies in divx it probably won't be that much of an issue. having digital audio out is also nice for those of us into audio as it can then be plugged into a DAC and amp.
#15
hot stuff baby yeah!

I have an archos 5 80gb - the only thing I use it for is to watch films in the toilet whilst at work :-)
fits nicely in the pocket when sneaking out. Also do use it on the train but a different type of seat....

Even though the screen is small, the quality of the video is exceptional and you forget about the size and get engrossed in the film. Only problem is that it only plays Avi type of films and you have to buy other codecs, then again most of downloads are all avi.

I do not use it for anything else because it just seems impractical for anything else.

Adult films you mean?

No HD , no can do

Got the Archos 5 last year, paid £200+ without the dock. All good except every now & then it randomly reboots itself, mostly with apps, never while just playing music etc. Can be very very easy hacked to get the real app store & custom firmware (2.2 although not fully compatible). Very hot.

Not really relevant to this thread as this is a completely different product. But for the record it's only the latest iphone and ipad that have 512 MB, the 3gs and first ipad have 256 ( as kingmobuk said) and the previous generation only had 128 MB.

This is a really good pricefor the Archos.
But as a previous arches 5 owner I have to say, these are really unreliable machines. They have constant issues, they reboot very often and the build quality leaves a lot to be desired. Archos's warranty and post purchase support is also very poor. Don't expect any major updates to the firmware, and any real customer support.

Dell have the streak going at 199 in carphonewarehouse on clearance (I think all the Tesco ones have gone) Bonus of a phone and running 2.2.
#25
I've had two arches players now, never again, you have to buy different addons like travel adapters and buy codecs for watching movies, battery life is woeful and the restart randomly arches support are even worse , save you money get a advent vega and flash it to 2.2 you get android store and machine
#26
I'd agree that if you're primarily after a tablet device for apps and web, then you'd be better off looking elsewhere (the Dell Streak and Advent Vega suggestions are good ones). However, if you're after a high capacity, portable media player that can also act as a PVR then there's not much competition out there. I see the fact that this operates as a tablet as a bonus feature. Try going away and taking a selection of movies, boxsets and music to choose from with a 32GB device and you'll be leaving some stuff behind.

Despite the way the market's gone, I'd still like to be able to carry the bulk of my music collection around with me, especially as we travel a fair bit (a cloud solution.s no good to me whilst driving across europe).
#27
I've enjoyed my Flytouch 3 from Chinagrabber but wifi reception can be weak, they go for c.£150
#28
I had an archos. Very nice to look at and feel but....I never used it.

This is better than mine but you can get a great little netbook for that thats much more versatile.
#29
The strong suit for archos has always been the ability through the dock to record straight from SKY, video, tv, you name it - which you can't do with other devices, so as a video device its unbeatable and at that price I'd snap it up if I didn't already have two 605s. All the other stuff id a bonus imho

kept happening to my 5 to a point wgere i returned it- loved the product while i had it though no prblems with having to convert videos like ipods and the size is great. good deal with the dvr dock which is usually about £70/80 on its own.

It is relevent, it means that you 100% will NOT be able to upgrade the android OS to a later version. The CPU means that 1080p will always be out of the question. Couple that with a 4.8inch screen and it seems like a dead duck to me.

Adobe have announced that they will not be making or supporting any future versions of FLASH (HTML5 won the war in the end) so don't waste your time buying another handheld media player just because it supports Flash. Pretty much most of the decent handheld media players out there supports Youtube by the way.

Sorry, I know that did not really answer your question but I would go "i" if I was you.

Try the advent vega, while the viewing angles are a bit iffy, add the corvus5 rom and you have a more than capable tablet, I can play the Lovefilm player off their site with no difficulties..

I have the Archos TV+ 250gb Box which Currys were selling off for £49
Brilliant buy it's been converting sky movies, Sopranos series etc for over a year
to AVI files which I put onto a big HDD and watch via my WDTV box when it
suits me - which is the best bit !!
The box also does a damn sight more web etc so no bitchin at Archos

at this price, go for dell streak, won't be wrong.
I have both dell streak (for my wife) and viewsonic viewpad 7 (both 7 inches).
Dell streak is abosolutely much better. The hardware spec is better, and you got a good selection of rom mods.

+1 Other than the dubious benefit of recording sky (dont most people download these days?) it's old tech, running flakey software that wont get updated. Much better options available for your hard earned money.

I'm at a loss to see why this is sooo hot? I'd rather get a cheap noname tablet for 1/4 the price. Bizarre....
