I know this was posted a little while ago but it was expired. Also the Currys/PC world deals are few and far between.
Well Amazon have it on again but it is £159.99 delivered (supersaver delivery).
A good price if you ask me.
No doubt there will be discussions on how good/bad Archos are.....

Hmm so -7 degrees after 9 minutes.... Is that because it is an Archos or because the price is too high? Or just...... because.
Ho hum, you've gotta love this forum
#2
I think it might be down to Archos charging you extra for the plugins to use the device as advertised.

I think it's a pretty good price, thanks for posting groomoid :) Still not sure whether to buy one or not, anyone got one?

I agree, but you can get the plugins a lot cheaper from a well known auction site. Not that that excuses Archos for their high prices.

Yep ive got the 250gb version and although the idea is good the battery life is shocking on the product and u cant replace it so after a few months it needs plugged into the wall every half hour of use......which would be enough of a reason not to get it imo and stick to an ipod touch

The new version based on the android os is supposed to be a lot better than this original archos 5

it's hotting up, see all that moaning and it still got hot.

Most posts go cold and then heat up, even if the OP moans a little :whistling:

160gb version is around £280. I think I'd rather have an ipad.

I think I would be tempted by an ipad, but its a lot of money for what I want it for...basically I just want a media player with a decent size screen for viewing movies etc.
5" or 7" would be ideal and I have started looking at the offerings from China "Ramos" "Ondo" etc, which by comparison are fairly cheap and play most file formats out of the box. I was so tempted by this though at £159.99...however, I haven't parted with my money yet.....I did get to a mouse click away then thought about it a bit more..

I had a few Archos devices and they were fine, stopped after the 605 wifi. They just stop supporting devices as soon as they release a new one. (well that's how it was when I owned them)

I cannot comment on the 5, looks nice and if you need a decent portable media player then you could do a lot worse then this.

That said, I'm going for the ipad, like the archos it hasn't got a camera either :whistling:

I've have an Archos 5. I disagree about the battery being bad which somebodyy mentioned above. Mines over 12months old, used regularly and still holds its charge fine. I can watch 2 movies with one charge.

You can jailbreak them now too so don't need to buy any plug-ins. Search mouldy cheese

I've got the 250gb version of this and although yes you pay for the plugins, it plays miles more fromats than any other portable media player. The quality is great and the battery on mine lasts around 3 hours on maximum sound and brightness (i've had it 18 months).
As mentioned before the new android one looks very good.

To all those commenting about "I'd rather have an iPad" why? it is a bigger version of the iPhone with a much bigger price tag with very little support for different file formats.

I think it's called freedom of choice :whistling:

(Having owned several Archos units, I'll choose an ipad thanks) :p

I think you find it's following the crowd

How can you compare an ipad to this? ipad will cost 4 times as much (probably much more) and is twice the size of the Archos. ipad isn't exactly a portable media player, its far to big. You can put the Archos in your pocket.

Good price, but I would still get an ipod touch..... SO SO much better IMHO

Whats always funny is that everyone ***** ipods/iphones/ipads off, yet everyone probably wants one! LOL

As an ex-Archos 5 owner:

It's an excellent product with caveats -

Yes, it crashes. Yes it's volume is pretty low. Yes, Archos support is shockingly bad. Yes, Archos have stopped supporting this model.

BUT, I really enjoyed mine. They're not for everyone, but I thought it was great, overall.

i used one and they are crap - the android version is better but the non android archos is rubbish,

the screen is good and is bigger than the ipod touch etc but this device is not a patch on the ipod touch.

I have been blown away by the ipod touch even though i was extremely anti -apple.

my daughter wanted one for christmas and reluctantly i bought her one despite me telling her that there were better players on the market.

after hers arrived i had a quick play on it and was hooked, so much so that i bought a 64gb version and its one of my best purchases ever.

web browsing is fantastic (so much so that often i will not bother switching on my laptop as the ipod touch is always on and ready to browse the net.

the screen is lovely on the ipod touch - plenty big enough to watch a film on.

the killer for me though is the gaming potential it has. i was an owner of the original psp and thought it was great for a time but not really that portable. i did not even know the touch could do games but it does and its great. the graphics are much better than i expected and some of the games on it are brilliant .

One of the worst things i have ever used, would not recommend it however many codecs it plays (after paying for them all with hastle to even download them) if you cant make a touchscreen that works properly then add a couple of buttons, after recently setting up a friends i found my self pressing really card with my fingernail on my iphone afterwards haha, not saying its a bad deal for the devise but usability means a lot to me.
#23
The ipod touch is ok, but I would never use the itunes store, the app store or any of the other crap apple want you to buy. As an mp3/movie player with a decent internet capabilty its good. And if you can find some free apps, games etc to chuck on it then its still good. But the sad thing is, the sort of peole that buy ipads, iphones and ipod touches are suckers and will pay for whatever crap they throw at you. My mate was scared of jailbreaking his iphone and buys apps.

But to be honest my old psp 1000 does everything the ipod touch does, some of it not as well admitedly, but its good enough and it has the bonus features of having huge gaming capability. And touch screens get on my nerves abit anyway.

Ive got a Cowon Q5, great piece of kit:
http://www.cowonglobal.com/product_wide/product_Q5W_feature.php

plays everything, has a radio, dont need to buy plugins, superb battery, going cheap on auction sites as theyre a bit old, wifi, internet browser etc. plays videos you get from torrents or nzb's!

great piece of kit and not following a crowd
#26
Not for me. I find my Nokia 5800, which I paid a mere £92 for brand new, more than suits my browsing needs when out and about.

I also have a laptop at home which I can pop into it's laptop bag should I be staying away for the night.

Personally don't see the point but each to their own I suppose.
#27
I love the predessor.. 80G 605 wi-fi.. the screen is so much bigger and higher res. than the missus's i-pod touch... huge storage space and drag and drop with having to use i-tunes for everything... but as you say each to his/her own.
#28
PC World still has this for £129.97 if you shop around - for example, Merthyr store has got in stock as has Swindon and Bath.
#29
I got the brand new sealed Archos 7 for £169 from Currys last week. But returned it back coz I don't think it is better than iTouch.

Cool story, bro.

I have the 250gb model and these are great but that they don't play MKV, and they don't play 1080p.....!

Which is a big downer.

you sound exactly like me before i had the opportunity of using one. your psp must have been magical then because the PSP i have certainly does not do what my ipod touch does.

I spoke to one of the stores yesterday and they confirmed it's still £129.97, although the Swindon one was a returned item so is probably reduced further my the manager in store.

I agree. A screen that size should have 1080p. :p

Or the Archos TV+?

No, the plugins are tied to the serial number of your 605. So you'd need to re-buy those too.
