Archos 5 and other deals @ Currys instore
My first post, so feel free to tear it to pieces!
I was in Currys Charlton today, they had a number of good deals: the Archos 5 500gb internet tablet for £199, the 160gb one for £149, etc; there were display models of the 500gb, 160gb, 32gb and 8gb, and 3 sealed boxes locked away below, I could see that one of them was the 8gb.
Yes, this is offloading old stock, but the 500gb has NO competition, old or new, especially at that price. I got mine on Amazon for £239 and was well chuffed at that price...
They also had the Sony NWZ-E445, that's the 16gb one, for just £39.99 - they have the 8gb version, the E444, selling online right now at £49.97, claiming £40.02 off, so less than £40 for the 16gb is pretty good - it mostly goes for over £100. There was one display model and 2 sealed, I got one of the sealed ones.
Finally, there were several sealed 8gb Archos 2 vision players, £19.97 apiece; they have a microsd slot so it's a cheap way of getting a lot of space (tho' the card tracks aren't integrated, unlike the Fuze's). At that price I got one but there are others.
Being daft, I bought a 3rd player - a Logik 2gb one going for just £6.97, but that was the last one in store.
Currys shelf clearing prices seem to be very store specific so there may be better deals elsewhere, or worse.

:D
some people give negative because it is Currys but I honestly believe that people will cynically give negative so the deal looks bad to put others off and then they are straight down to the store.
I have a 60gb Archos 5 and watching movies on it is brilliant - the quality is amazing.

Yeah, that makes sense. Someone has since posted a worse offer on the Sony, also at Currys, also in-store only, and got +207. Go figure.
Agreed about the Archos 5 video quality, and the 500gb has room for a lot of films too - and that's after I put over 200gb of music on it!!!
btw, I got a snap for the same price - good, innit?

Just saying :)
Problem is you'll just get rubbish like this if you force people to explain.

I only discovered the Archos 5 earlier this week when I decided to Google for a 500gb MP3 player (I listen to a lot of lossless albums). It seems quite good value really.
My iPod 160gb is driving me insane, i'd love to replace it.

Maybe, but another poster at around the same time listed the 8gb Sony at £10 more than I listed the 16gb one, and that listing was also store specific (I know, 'cos I just got back from Lewisham where the 4gb version is still selling at £30 more than my 16gb one!!!) - and their post got to 207 degrees.
As mentioned in the post - 1 boxed Archos 5 8gb, 2 boxed Archos 5 of indeterminate capacity, 1 Sony nwz-e445 boxed, several Archos 2 Vision 8gb boxed, and at least one of everything on display, as of yesterday.
On Archos reliability: I swapped my ipod Classic 160gb for the 500gb Archos. The ipod only froze twice in a couple of years, the Archos tends to do it at least once a day; but then I only ever listened to music on the ipod. I use the Archos for music, video, basic games and basic web surfing. I can fit an unbelievable amount of music on there, and still have room for a fairly large library of films and tv serials. Rebooting from time to time isn't a problem for me, I wouldn't recommend one for anyone who would object.
