My first post, so feel free to tear it to pieces!

I was in Currys Charlton today, they had a number of good deals: the Archos 5 500gb internet tablet for £199, the 160gb one for £149, etc; there were display models of the 500gb, 160gb, 32gb and 8gb, and 3 sealed boxes locked away below, I could see that one of them was the 8gb.

Yes, this is offloading old stock, but the 500gb has NO competition, old or new, especially at that price. I got mine on Amazon for £239 and was well chuffed at that price...

They also had the Sony NWZ-E445, that's the 16gb one, for just £39.99 - they have the 8gb version, the E444, selling online right now at £49.97, claiming £40.02 off, so less than £40 for the 16gb is pretty good - it mostly goes for over £100. There was one display model and 2 sealed, I got one of the sealed ones.

Finally, there were several sealed 8gb Archos 2 vision players, £19.97 apiece; they have a microsd slot so it's a cheap way of getting a lot of space (tho' the card tracks aren't integrated, unlike the Fuze's). At that price I got one but there are others.

Being daft, I bought a 3rd player - a Logik 2gb one going for just £6.97, but that was the last one in store.

Currys shelf clearing prices seem to be very store specific so there may be better deals elsewhere, or worse.

wtf, -7 without even a comment? The deal is real, it's good, it's available to people in the area, how can it be 'cold'?
#2
I wish people woulkd say why they vote cold.

It would help wouldn't it? Cold voters expert knowledge ought to be shared. :)

have some heat m8

:D

have some heat - I posted archos snap on for £4.97 and mentioned these offers and got minus 140 !

some people give negative because it is Currys but I honestly believe that people will cynically give negative so the deal looks bad to put others off and then they are straight down to the store.

I have a 60gb Archos 5 and watching movies on it is brilliant - the quality is amazing.

Yeah, that makes sense. Someone has since posted a worse offer on the Sony, also at Currys, also in-store only, and got +207. Go figure.

Agreed about the Archos 5 video quality, and the 500gb has room for a lot of films too - and that's after I put over 200gb of music on it!!!

btw, I got a snap for the same price - good, innit?
#7
Did they have a lot of stock in store? I'll try my local but it never has Archos stock in :(

Got mine from fulham.... nice. One 500gb left....

2x 160gb units at Kingston if anyone is after one.
#9
I bet some people vote cold as it gives them a head start on getting to the shops first!

I wouldn't buy anything Arcos ever again, it may be because they are desiged in a country where hard work is illegal but they are without doubt the most horrible, useless technology company I can think of.

Cold probably because these are limited to specific stores... some people have been on so many goose chases over this kind of thing they just vote cold.

Just saying :)

Problem is you'll just get rubbish like this if you force people to explain.

I only discovered the Archos 5 earlier this week when I decided to Google for a 500gb MP3 player (I listen to a lot of lossless albums). It seems quite good value really.

My iPod 160gb is driving me insane, i'd love to replace it.
#14
seems good to me when you compare the price Apple rip people for
#15
I personally own a Archos 605 and love it. People are probably voting cold because this IS old stock and with the new 70 and 101 coming out, many people would prefer to go for them
#16
Thanks, i'm definitely going to stop buy after work
banned#17
Rang Currys Digital in Portsmouth and they have none of the Sonys left, not sure what they where selling them at though. Forgot to ask abour the Achos I'm afraid.
#18
Vote cold.

Cold probably because these are limited to specific stores... some people have been on so many goose chases over this kind of thing they just vote cold.

Maybe, but another poster at around the same time listed the 8gb Sony at £10 more than I listed the 16gb one, and that listing was also store specific (I know, 'cos I just got back from Lewisham where the 4gb version is still selling at £30 more than my 16gb one!!!) - and their post got to 207 degrees.

Did they have a lot of stock in store?

As mentioned in the post - 1 boxed Archos 5 8gb, 2 boxed Archos 5 of indeterminate capacity, 1 Sony nwz-e445 boxed, several Archos 2 Vision 8gb boxed, and at least one of everything on display, as of yesterday.

On Archos reliability: I swapped my ipod Classic 160gb for the 500gb Archos. The ipod only froze twice in a couple of years, the Archos tends to do it at least once a day; but then I only ever listened to music on the ipod. I use the Archos for music, video, basic games and basic web surfing. I can fit an unbelievable amount of music on there, and still have room for a fairly large library of films and tv serials. Rebooting from time to time isn't a problem for me, I wouldn't recommend one for anyone who would object.

Sounds good, but what are the call plans on these things or can you get them pay as you go?
#22
Prob because it's one of those 'unheard of brands' and if it doesn't have Apple on it then it's not good enough for them.

I'm giving heat, had one of the origonal Archos Jukebox 10GB's back in the day runing on 4aa batteries!
Loved it and it still works now.
#23
Good deal. There are a bunch of new Archos products coming out now but the 5 is still a great media player. My 160gb has been a loyal companion over the last year.
#24
The reviews aren't good...

I own an Archos TV+, It is probably the worst piece of technology ever made. A friend of mine had a n Archos hand held and that was also awful and spent more time crashing than working. That is enough of a bad experience to put me off for life.

Hey, I made the mistake of buying their products once, I would feel guilty if I let others do the same without making a comment.

No, it's because they have a long track record of making awful products. Even if the hardware is good, the software is usually so poor and unsupported it can ruin a good concept. I have no love for apple but at least their products are fit for purpose.

This is an awesome find.Is the deal for the Sony NWZ E445 16GB player still available? I looked on the website and can't find it for £39.99... I've been trying to call Currys but keep being put on hold.. took a while to find the number too. Is it just an instore deal at certain stores?-if so, how can i find out which stores?
#28
I've got a 500GB Archos 5 Tablet. I got it to play ripped DVD's in the car/plane for my son. It's brilliant for that. The video quality is great. When you register the product, Archos unlock the mp4 file format, which means that you can rip DVD's into a format that will play on the iPad, iPhone and Archos.

Guys Archos' new range is being drip fed out now, waiting on Android compatibility and that - I say steer clear of the Archos stuff - the price will be similar and the worst thing is Archos never supports old products, they just cast them off and stop updating. Cold.

Have been into 3 currys without any joy, think they have all gone now:(
#31
but none of them have a 500GB hard drive and a 5" screen.
#32
i voted negative because archos are absolutely dreadful. they leave you high and dry as soon as they have a new product out and having gone through the archos forums this seems to be something they have ALWAYS done. i bought the top model for the time the archos 705 wifi and within a few months they stopped all support for it as soon as other products were rolled out so i expect the same with these. whilst the product is great it gets left behind extremely quickly when archos decides they are bored with it.
#33
The Archos 70 and 101 are just about being released, so this is probably why the previous generation are being reduced.

Prices look good but I would recommend anyone looking for an android tablet to look at the 70 and 101 instead since they both sport a faster processor and capacative toucscreen, along with Android 2.2 which makes for a much more finger-friendly experience.
#34
how do these cope as e-readers?

Just ordered myself a kindle, after talking about it for months. Then I see this, and I do like watching films/shows on the go

any thoughts?
#35
Amazing - I listed Archos Snap-on for the Archos 5 everyone is keen to now get and also stated that these bargains are now instore and I got minus 111 - lol

If anyone does get the archos 5 internet tablet then also (if in stock) get the snap-on - it is a small device which will allow you to record of the TV. The picture quality on this device is brilliant.

yup I watch movies on the toilet at work ! stick in the headphones and nobody will disturb you in there - managed to watch 5 films in 6 weeks - too busy to watch them at home - no jokes about the number of times I have to go :)

Also get some decent headphones - noise isolating ones - especially if you are on the train.

I have my archos 5g (older model but only one with 3g modem build in) and it is simply the best buy I have ever done. It is jailbraked now so I have all free plugins, HSDPA modem working like a treat, system is booting increadibly fast and I can be online in 5 seconds, it allows me to play direcly from any USB source ( acting as a USB host so I can plug external drive or USB memory stick and play movies directly from the external drive). I was about to buy new archos 5 but was really dissapointed with lack of HSDPA:(, remember this model has android 1.6 built in and will not play new flash 10.1 so it is massive disadvatage, personally I am waiting for Archos 43 Internet media tablet with full flash support.

yes archos 7 can be jailbraked as well is requires to downgrade firmware first, bear in mind it must be performed from linux, you don't have to install linux, you can just run from cd and perform all steps
