Nice device, shame it's just for media, would be excellant if it had pocket pc functions and wifi

Can anyone find any reviews on this ? (I thought Google was supposed to have fixed their results to favour reviews over sales ?? :-( )

and Marquez - are there any such devices (at this sort of price point) ?

The new version is out which has WI-FI capability. Same price but for only 30 gig

Considering the functionality you get with a laptop and the fact that they are the same kinda price or not much more, i think it's better to get a laptop

Sure it won't fit in you pocket but a 12" one is very portable

You gotta think functionality, and that leads to a laptop

If you only want to watch occasional videos or listen to music on the move, then a laptop has redundant functionality. For this price you are not likely to get much of a laptop, and the battery life will be a lot less than the archos for a laptop, so then you have to carry a mains lead to charge it up, adding to the weight. Most laptops I suspect would also not be as rugged as this archos. Just my opinion!

Also - you can use these as a PVR and connect them to your telly as far as Im aware. A PVR with a screen at this price seems nice to me :)

Has anyone managed to get a discount code for 10% off to work, I have only managed the Free Delivery. Can't get it down to less than £229 delivered

Yeah but what kind of muppet just wants to watch occasional videos or listen to music? as opposed to having a fully functional pc

Chances are if you have one of these devices you have a fully functional PC sitting at home to load the MP3s from.

What muppet wants to carry around a laptop to listen to music for a few hours as opposed to carrying around something that can be slipped into you pocket and lasts for 17+ hours? If you ain't going to be using the extra functionality it will not be worth it.

If you travel on a commuter train you see hundreds of people carrying laptops, but they then get out an iPOD or similar to listen to music because these devices are much better suited for that purpose. Your mileage may differ, but from my own experieince, given the choice I'd not carry a laptop around just to listen to music (and video).

Hi

Has anyone managed to apply any of the discount codes to this?

Also I know this has a 20GB bigger hard drive than the AV560 but as they are basically the same price. Is the 504 a superior model or as I'm wanting to record straight from TV is the AV560 my best option as the 504 requires the £69.99 DVR Station to do this?

Choices, choices...

Thanks guys

From Currys website:
Product description
The Archos 504 is a next-generation portable video and music player for entertainment on the move.

A bright 4.3'' TFT screen makes viewing videos and photos easy and pleasurable while the intuitive navigation means it's easy to use. A whopping 80Gb hard disk is enough to store 40,000 songs, 800,000 pictures, 226 regular-length movies or any combination of the three. You can also use the Archos MP4 player to watch DVD-quality videos on your television and record directly from the TV so that you can take your favourite programmes wherever you go. For viewing photos, simply download them from your PC. The rechargeable battery can power up to 17 hours of music or 5.5 hours of video, enough to keep you entertained on long journeys.

For a better view of it, check this link out from the Archos website: http://www.archos.com/products/video/archos_504/index.html?country=global&lang=en

no no, archos stuff is very good. i've used an AV560 all year for long haul flights. very reliable. boots up in a couple of seconds. has a screen so good i still go "wow", often. fits in a (large pocket). runs for hours (i just swapped the battery to a double life one for £20, but before i was charging it off AAs just fine on long journeys). has never let me down like a full computer does. in fact, i pretty much don't bother taking books, gameboys, cd players or anthing else now i'm used to this thing.
i'm tempted to buy this just 'cos i had such good experience with their last generation.. but not sure what the advantage is. (the better codec support is the main attraction i think). the trouble with making products so good, is people are happy to carry on using them forever :)

Thanks for the info Smiff :) I've been looking at these for a while, all good reviews so far too!

You've clearly never used one of these devices - I'm one of the 'muppets' you refer to, I have an 11.1 inch laptop at 1.5kg which is great in general but the Archos is convenient for recording and a lot easier to use when commuting...there's no way I could balance the laptop on one hand while holding onto the rail when packed amongst other people. With the Archos I can easily watch the programs I missed the night before.

I'm probably going got a 604 wifi as I like the large touchscreen which should make it good for the car.

Negative rep from someone signing themselves as cheezy_chip, although it is highly unlikely it was actually left by them:

Used an offensive word (muppet) - cheezy_chip

You're back to green now :)

Real shame Currys don't do the 604, very close to hitting the 'buy' button and a ten percent discount would push me over the edge...

Working well code wise...£199.82 via Quidco:-D

ARGH!!!

I just purchases the 40GB version from Amazon (£200) about 3 weeks ago for my Xmas... I already unwrapped it to try it out so can't even return it. Can't believe that i could have got an 80GB for the same price if i only waited a couple of weeks :(

PS. I have used it for a few hours so PM me if you got any questions... if i can answer them i will.

The player doesnt have official DivX support but it plays them fine just so long as they are not QPEL/Packed Bitstream etc (same as DivX DVD Players). Will also play MPEG and VOB files with an optional 20 euros plug-in.

Screen quality is A-M-A-Z-I-N-G!

just seen it advertised on TV - very tempted!

I'll have to go try one on for size tomorrow - but looks like a great alternative to the ipod (which may have a decent discount tomorrow on apples uk black friday)

The new version does have wifi and internet browser -who needs a laptop?!? Got raved inthe latest stuff which arrived on my doorstep today...

This version still great though if you cant afford other version :)
#30
Bear in mind the 604 wifi screen isn't as good because it needs another layer for the touchscreen.

Shame the capacity is so small on the 604 wifi, although it uses a 1.8inch hard drive those now go up to 80GB.

ok, i've been doing some reading (thinking of getting this myself) and found that the 04 series may not have as good a screen as the old AV500 series... hmm thats disappointing if so. i'm not sure, its probably firmware fixable to some extent, but they don't have a great track record of delivery what I want in updates. so perhaps this is why it's going for £100 less than it "should" be. just a thought - there are some improvements aswell so it's not all bad, and it's still probably better than anything else currently available for what it does overall. anyway further research is needed, for people with previous generation, to not be disappointed. as i said AV500 is very good :)
#32
Does not come with charger http://www.thedvdforums.co.uk/forums/images/smilies/shrug.gif (you have to charge via USB) or the PVR station (if you want to use component output for maximum resolution on TV)which is another £55-£70.
#33
The charger that comes with the PVR Station is a North American type connection, but it comes with two adapters which plug onto the connector to turn it into a UK type of Continental type. It's the same no matter where you buy from.

I purchased the DVR Station along with my 504 40GB from Amazon. The 504 also comes with a "pouch" which helps protect the screen. It's an extremely snug fit so no chance of it falling out on it's own.
#34
I am very disappointed with the screen on the 504. It is not as bright or sharp as the AV500 which was excellent. A refund coming up I think.
