Mine was in London Colney but I got the only one I could see.
#14
Can anyone with one of these suggest what accessories to get?
#15
I had one and felt the battery pack was useful for extending battery life and fast charging.
Also get the plugins off ebay for cheap.
#16
I've just been reading the reviews on Amazon, I don't think I'll be buying one.
#17
Great deal if you can get one.

The only thing that disappoints me is the lack of format support

I think there is a dock that allows you to use it as a PVR with your TV
#19
I am sure you have to subscribe to Archos to get the full use of the wifi - otherwise you are stuck with a few apps only and cant get proper internet access. Great for an external back up HD though.

Thanks!

I dont think this will be widely available so it looks like you pick yourself up a right gem there!

Have a nice new year! :)
#21
These have been out 3 or 4 years and have been superseded. Anyone had one and can confirm how good it is?
#22
Great piece of kit - I owned a 30GB variant for a year or so and recently upgraded to the newer version.
Plays videos, music, photos, internet browsing and more.....decent hi-res screen (800x480) and generally a fabulous device and stunning price !

it has excellent format support you just have to buy the extra plugins to get full support. It cant play real media or HD files but what else are you expecting?

Is this true? Anyone confirm?
#26
I use the 40gb version to stream divx/xvid/pics and MP3 around the house - nice touchscreen too.
#27
Newcastle store and metro Centre at Gateshead haven't stocked these for a while and the website is only showing the new versions. Sounds like the OP got a bargain from somewhere who had one left.
#28
I have the 30 gb version & I hate how Archos gouge you for every thing they can.

They don't even sell these things with a charger, you have to charge it with a USB plugged into your PC which takes 24 hours.
If you want faster charging you need to fork out for a seperate charger.

Mine did come with the browser app unlocked though. Again, I hate having to pay to unlock apps after buying the unit.

They're pretty fragile too... I wouldn't use Archos again.

I bought one 2 or 3 years ago and took it back because it was going to cost a lot more to subscribe and also the accessories were not cheap either and you did need them, especially the charger! Sounds like Xbox all over again!
#30
Oh yeah, you can't plug the USB directly into the unit, you need some poxy adapter which is easy to lose so there's summat else you have to shell out for.... It's all very cynical.
#31
I must admit I thought about one when I saw that curry's had the same sort of deal but was put off by the reviews and lack of format support - unless you pay for extra formats from archos !
To me (IMHO) it seem's a bit dated and should be able to play everything from the box which isn't the case.
But good price if it is what you like

How were your browser apps unlocked? Was that part of the deal?
#33
the 604/704 came with the browser free, the 605/705 browser plugin was extra.....around £15+ on ebay usually buys all the plugins
#34
I got mine from Comet & on the box it said that the browser was unlocked. It might have been a special or it might be a sort of "taster" from Archos to try to make you buy more apps, I'm not sure.
It was about 18 months ago I bought it, sorry.

I have to say it does have a good screen & if you just want a basic player with DivX capabilities this is a fine price, I just don't like Archos very much :)
#35
i've had one for about a year now 605 80gb. and i love it

i bought the docking station for it, this allows me to transfer all my saved tv from my sky+ to my archos. so much easier than transfering it on my computer.

the screen is excellent quality

the battery lasts me about 5 hours for watching films etc

all in all i would say its a great ltiile device i carry mine in a bag with other items all day as long as you get a leather cover for it its fine!
#36
none in Leicester Gallowtree Gate store, 2 members of staff confirmed they never had it in stock :(
#37
I think Archos are great- what a bargain!!!
#38
All gone in London Colney now :( Popped there right after seeing this and all sold out.
#39
I have the 605 but the smaller 40g, for the last 2 years been fine I was thinking of upgrading the Archos 5 at some point with a much bigger hard drive

Nothing wrong with Archos 605's. Obviously that statement is personal experience and my own point of view but there's so many people (especially on Amazon) write Archos devices off when they've not even owned them!. Probably owners of shiny new Ipods no doubt!.

I've owned the Archos AV480 for years and never had a problem. Ended up selling it though as I purchased both the Archos 405 2GB Flash version and the Archos 605 80GB WIFI. Both the 405 and 605 are great little devices. Battery life is the only bone of contention. The 405 achieves a good 5 or 6 hours video playback whereas you're lucky to get more than 3 hours out of the 605.

As for "charging extra for peripherals". Is that not what all companies do?. ALL Archos 605 players have the capability to Surf the web, play webtv, stream realmedia, play ac3 encoded video etc built into the unit. They charge to unlock these features. As pointed out you can buy most of them as a bundle from various guys on ebay for around £10-15 total.

It's a doddle to do and takes seconds. Admittedly the surfing the web aspect is pretty much pants unless you have a lot of patience. It's not got the cpu for decent surfing speed.

Without any plugins installed both the 405 and 605 players will play .mp3 and most .avi / .mpg files. General rule is if it's not a HD, AC3 encoded DIVX video it should play it. I found most of my DIVX content played before the plugin so I've only gained the ability to watch a little extra than I already did.

Also without the need for a plugin you can download and install flash apps and games - like with the Ipod.

The 605 series has plenty of life left in it and at £75 it's a steal. I wish I could find an M&S and I'd get another!.
