with the £50 saving you can get the docking station

Got one of these about a year ago (30 gig) and couldnt believe how many extras you have to buy and how fragile they are. Got the Helmet cam which is brilliant but the device and amount of attatchments you have to buy is unbelievable. even just to charge it!

It is a cool gadget but Archos will have your bank cleared out after you get all the software etc.

But at this price if you just want a media player its worth it for movies etc. excellent screen!

wont vote because I'm so torn.

Is this totally made out of metal? (Like the other Archos models)

Yes it's a metal case and metallic buttons. It's a really nice bit of kit. I've got the 30GB model but with the battery dock and an external disk connected via USB you can up this to whatever you like. 10 hours play with the battery dock (about £30 extra though), 4 hours without.
#5
good device, can't record at 60hz thou ie 360 recording, and have to paid for software add in
#6
I have the 160GB version and its NOT made of metal. The 04 series was an apparently had problems with static killing the internals. The buttons, and casinf are plastic on all the 605's Ive seen - although Ive never seen the 20GB version I expect its probably the same shell as the 30GB one - ie PLASTIC.

Its a top machine - plays MP3, DivX and Xvid out of the box, which is what most people will want it for. If you really require MP4 or VOB support, then yes you have to pay for it, but thats at your discretion obviosuly!
#7
Compared to an ipod classic, i'd say it depend on your needs - if you want a video oriented device, then Archos FTW! If you prefer Audio then iPod all the way. I have an Archos and an iPod (not classic tho), and have no music on my Archos - I switch when I want to listen to music.

Ultimately, they are both great at their speciality (video for Archos, Music for iPod), so should tailor you purchase based on that.

Included in the "MP4 & VOB" additional cost is the AAC codec, so if you have your favourite movie/tv series encoded as Xvid with AAC audio then be prepared to shell out another few notes on it.

I did, and don't regret it 'cos it's a really nice piece of kit...however it's a real shame that it's an extra cost...makes t feel like they're trying to take advantage of us with all the extras.

Must also point out that certain versions of WMV are not supported (I think anything less than v8...can't remember for sure) with no add-on packs available for improving this. So if you have a mixed collection you may need to transcode the files or do without.

VERY hot price for an extremely good bit of kit.

I have 605 40g brought via this site for 150 7 months ago, great piece of kit but now I would like a bigger hard drive but swapping things via the computer is ok, considering the price for the 40g not sure I would pay 130 now for half the size, so not voting. The dvr station whilst £50 is great as its like my own little sky+
#10
Software like PocketDivX Encoder can recode the audio from AAC to MP3 audio in an Xvid in less than 5 minutes (as it leaves the video untouched). In case thats useful to anyone!
#11
This is an awesome multimedia device, but I dont recomend it if you mainly want a music player. If however you want to watch videos its pretty damned great. With the dock (you buy as an extra) not only can you hook it up to your tv you can also record sky etc... directly onto the player. The best feature of which is that it will even switch sky on and select the chanel for you. If you dont have a sky+ box then this is great. Plus you can also use it to wirelessly stream media from a pc. So you can store all your music and films on your pc and use the archos to play them on your tv/stereo. Plus add on top of this that it has an internet browser and with firmware updates will play the latest version of flash (which no other players do btw) its a great package :)

It's a good deal, but not the best for the archos.

Below is a C&P from my constantly updated best archos 605 price thread at
http://forum.archosfans.com/viewtopic.php?t=6146

But in short, even with a £20 price cut (20GB has been £149.00 at laksys for months) the new Pixmania bundle deals on the 40GB are the best 605 deals right now. Basically unless you want <20gb storage, the cheapest you'll get it for is ~£130. For £50 more you can get the 40GB bundled with the docking station for £177.75 from pixmania. The deal there is, sell the dock on ebay and you should make around £50 (pixmania themselves sell the docking station for >£80), giving you 40GB for ~£130 which is double the size for the cheapest you'd get a 20gb.

Note that the archos units are priced as discounted due to exclusion of various plugins. Add the cost of whatever plugins you like back on (browser, various audio, games, etc) for around £15 each. Some may say they're ripping you off. They're actually saving you money by excluding what you don't want/need.

Excellent price for this archos model, i have the 4 gb version with a 16 b card bought from play.com, but do wish i had a bigger internal memory at times.
Screen is excellent, sound from the speakers are very adequte, and all th xtras you get are great.
Puts a IPOD to shame

Voted cold. My friend just bought 40 gb one off Fleabay shop (Not sure which one though) for £143 delivered.

I've got an 80gb 504 and thats made out of metal but it's an amazing machine. I love it. You dont need to get the extras if u dont want them. The extras include one pluging that plays Vobs directly and plays files with AC3 sound, the other plays mp4 H263 files. I just got the one for AC3 sound as I didn't want to convert my xvids to mp3. It can now play anything i chuck at it.

I still have the 160gb for 99 pounds from currys and have to good mp4 player but shame about the plug ins (anyone interested in using the web browser for free hit me for a message).
#17
Argh, i'm torn. I've been weighing up the iPod Touch and the Archos for about a year now and finally decided to go with the iPod Touch 16gb. Now that I've seen this I feel like i'm back to square one.
#18
I have the iPhone and an Archos, and for video the Archos is the king of the 2. So plump for this if video is important to you. If you like a good tune and a slick interface (and nice web browser), then iPod wins.

Can this output x264 at 1080p through hdmi?

sell the dock on ebay and you should make around £50

Keep the dock!! hehe :) it makes the archos so much more usefull. It's worth paying the extra for. So that works out as a good deal, this is of course if you trust pixmania :)
#21
"Can this output x264 at 1080p through hdmi?"

Nope. It only supports video up to 720x576 in AVI/MP4/VOB. The dock does have component out, but only outputs up to 576i, so no progressive scan even.

I am tempted by Pixmania deal. Like a blind sheep I have registered in the back of my mind that they are bad to deal with. I bought a Canon camcorder from them about 6 years ago, hardly ever used it, and it was as advertised so I can't comment. However what I have noticed is the apparant inability to actually speak with someone at Archos UK to see if I could deal with them directly if a problem should occur with the product. Are not all products bought within the EU covered wherver you bought it, or is that too fair?

I bought my Archos 605 160GB from Canada last year, and Archos UK repaired it when I dropped it and it died. All they wanted was proof of purchase (they didnt care where it was bought).

Other than that fact however, servce from Archos isnt the John West - took me about 5 days to get throught by phone when I had to return it!

thanks for that. I wonder what their response would have been if it was a warranty issue
#26
Well I told them mine was a warranty issue - I neglected to mention the dropping part, nd just told them mine died. Otherwise they would have repaired it but charged me.
#27
re case type - the 20, 40, 80 + 160 GB models all use a larger size case (20mm thick), the 4 and 30 GB use a smaller 15mm thick one. i think they're all plastic.

oh and my main 605 price thread has already been updated. 80gb and 4gb have dropped by a few £s and after quidco the gps and 30gb are cheaper through dabs as they now do free shipping over £100. see http://forum.archosfans.com/viewtopic.php?t=6146

Okay, so it looks like that as long as Pixmania actually deliver what they claim they are selling all should be okay.

I got a couple of bits from Pixmania (including an Archos battery dock), and have had no problems. But I have heard that when you get problems with them, you REALLY get problems!

If it helps, I've ordered digital cameras from PixMania in the past and had absolutely no issues whatsoever.

memories. I still remember the Argos 605 160gb which some of us got for 99.99. Major bargain !!
#33
can u go on the internet on these?
#34
You can surf the web if you shell out £20 for the web browser. Its a decent enough browser, but very slow.

Yeah, it will mainly be used for music and the web browser, and probably gaming once there are a few better options in the App Store. I've seen a few applications that look fantastic, but i'm not 100% sure i'd want to jailbreak it.

I now can't make up my mind to get the 80gb from amazon market place or 40gb & DVR dock from PixMania.
