This functions great as a Sky + type recording system if you get the dock also. Handy for me record the stuff i miss when i am at work and watch it back in the bath when i am back.
#5
can this play xvid's?
#6
good bit of kit but to play the most movie files you have to pay for the codec on the archos's.
but the player is good but will need to pay about another £25 if you want the web browser and video codecs
#7

I didn't find this deal online - not sure about any other HMV stores - must be a stock clear out in the London Oxford Street branch.

can this play xvid's?

they do but you have to buy the plug in
you can normally get avi/xvid / web browser / and 2 others for around £18 from a guy in canada on a wel known auction site, cost about that each on from the archos site, takes about 5 days as each code/file is unique to each unit , you have to email him both serial number and product number, he also sells others other archos model plug ins too at good prices
ive got a 80 gig version
paid £124 for it last december, also got 3 year warranty for an extra £15 from currys as seen on here (hukd)
only used it a couple of times though
as its wifi great for streaming avi's over your network
great price, have some heat mate

I must disagree with this report. I received a 605 for my birthday as a present the Archos froze on the first day of use and despite all attempts to Repair, Re Format, Reset and Complete System Reset the machine refused to co operate. Thanks to Curry's excellent after sale service the device was exchanged for a new one. I again got busy but the Archos was continuosly freezing but would rectify itself with the difficult to use reset button, I took to carrying a tooth pick around to operate the reset button. The very poor cover included in the package was replaced for a much better after market cover from ebay because the Archos is smooth and easily dropped. The charging method via usb is slow and I found the battery life in normal use to be very poor. However, I downloaded my music files, photos and home movies, but began to regret this gift as the features are inferior to my 8 gig ipod apart from the bigger screen. Access to the internet requires add ons which detracts from the purchased package, i.e. (metaphorical batteries not included). I never got to the wifi point because the fragile nature of the device ensured that this second machine also froze from which I could not retrieve functionality. I may have taken drastic action but I smashed my Archos 605 in disgust and placed its usless remains in the bin. If anyone would like a leather cover please email me and you can have mine free of charge. In conclusion I would rate the Archos 605 as fragile, temperamental, slow to boot, user unfriendly, requires extras to make full use of and generally unfit for purpose. Its general bad design makes portability a risky proposition. A disappointed Archos user.

I'm in dispute with both Archos and the vendor (I will not say who until after they've actually refunded my money). The Archos 30GB WiFi does not perform as advertised. The 17 hour playing time for music only is a huge overstatement - I'm lucky to get as much as 8 hours from mine. It's been back for "repair", but they appear to have done nothing to it at all - just claimed that they found no fault. My advice - steer clear of this player. And pray you never have to deal with Archos technical/customer support, because they're next to useless. I have been given three different values for the battery life (8.5 hours, 17 hours and 25 hours), so even they don't know what the performance should be. Plus they fail to answer emails and telephone calls."

Hope this helps someone.

Pill ;)

shame it wont let you deliver to a uk address works out at only £119 NICE
wounldnt of thought import tax would of been too bad either as its only £119
amazom.co.uk are charging £179 for the same one
if i remember correctly this one plays x264 so would probally play.mkv files so should be blu-ray quality

Would be pointless as resolution is only 800 x 600. not a hd panel supose it's be sightly better than standard quality but still not quiet blue ray

I've got a 605 and it def does not play .mkv files. It does support H.264, but not in a MKV container (only ,mp4, mov and m4a - renaming the file ext to these does not work) Also , apart form the fact that the screen is only 800x600, it does not output 1080p from the dock, so there's no blu ray quality viewing with this.
The screen on this is brilliant though and dvd quality files provide more than adequate picture quality

That is incorrect. This device plays most xvids out of the box, the issue is with the sound encoding on some xvid files which have AC3 encoding which requires the Cinema plugin. Any other xvid file with the usual mp3 encoding plays fine.

Yeah, certainly better and cheaper to get any plugins you want from *that* auction site!. I think there are some people in the UK that are doing them on there as well.

Is this deal available elsewhere? Or is this store specific? My girlfriend and I are both looking for one each and would love to go this week and find one! Crossing fingers
#23
IMHO. Screen size and resolution far better for watching videos than the ipod touch and just drap and drop files. No messing about with I-tunes for everything.

A bit bulkier mind but tons of space for Movies and Mp3s. You can store Iplayer files which the ipod cant do as well.
#24
Has anyone actually got one of these?
It seems only the OP has managed to get one.
Thanks.

Hot from me...Apparently the archos 605 is extremely good for reading pdf files, so it'd make an excellent e-reader!

DON'T FORGET 5% QUIDCO.
#29
Ordered one and remembered quidco!!

yeah cheers for the headsup! just bought one 30gb for video on files will be plenty for me
#31
I have a AV506 60gb I bought about 4/5 years ago and its still going strong but the hard drive is getting a bit clunky so this will make an ideal replacement, especially with the added wi-fi.
#32
Bought one - 10% Student Discount also taken off which doesnt normally happen with hardware from HMV - £45 - jobs a good un :-D
#33
Thanks OP - this will be good for watching TV series and movies on the train.

#35
Just bough one and will sell my 160gb as i am not using anywhere near that, Great for Iplayer and if you have windows 7 when you drag files onto it if they dont play (such as AC3) WMP converts them automatically,
#36
Is it worth buying the extra "bits"? (web player etc).

As already mentioned legit upgrades seem to be available for just over £16 from a few sellers on fleabay for a bundle of all the required add ons.

Thanks for that.

Only extra I can see as being useful is the web browser......

I'll play with it for a bit before shelling out any extra cash.

Actually got an email from HMV 2 hours after ordering saying it had been despatched............. Not bad for New Years Day !!!
