Really a grate price. I just bought it from pixmania for 199 :(
Fantastic multimedia device with super high resolution touchscreen (800x480) Wifi capability and Internet browser (plug-in). I recommend it!

The ARCHOS 605 WiFi displays the most impressive combination of features in a portable video player.

The ARCHOS 605 WiFi lets you:

* Play all your digital entertainment: movies, TV shows, photos and music

* Record** your favorite TV shows * Stream and watch videos from your PC

* Download movies and music directly on your PMP using the ARCHOS Content Portal * Enjoy the new high resolution 4.3'' touch screen (800x480 pixels)

* Internet enabled to surf the Web, share content, and access Web video sites (eg DailyMotion) * Customize your ARCHOS with great accessories and plug-ins

* View, zoom photos and make slide shows with music and transition effects, for viewing on the PMP or TV * Listen to all your favorite music in more formats than any other player

* 30GB* to store up to 40 movies, 300,000 photos or 15,000 songs * *1 GB = 1 billion bytes, formatted capacity is less

** With the optional DVR Station, DVR Travel Adapter or Mini Dock

nice find!

im very tempted but on the archos site it says they are bringing out 80 and 160GB versions.

im trying desperately to stop myself from giving in and bying this in the meantime
#2
cheers for this, i was tempted by the archos 404 that was posted the other day but now im glad i waited for this lil beauty lol cheers
#3
does any1 know if this plays avi format?? thanks
#4
yeah got a 404 a little while back, well a 80gb, like the idea of a wifi that i can stream pcitures and films from a external hardrive connected to my router. but as been pointed out 30gb isn't alot for me, any idea what sort of prices the 80gb will go for.
#5
I had the 604 wifi and sold it so I could buy this. This is a brilliant price, I ordered this from Archos a few weeks ago and they wanted to charge £232. Fortunately they demanded a copy of my passport before they would process my order. I refused.

Now I've saved nearly £70. Thanks

160GB version HERE £253.98

4gb verion HERE £126.65

I think the 4gb version has an SD slot but you can check out on this great forum HERE

The 4gb version should also have a slightly longer battery life as it does not have to power a hard drive. I cancelled my order for the 30gb and purchased the 160gb.

Archos 605 Wi-Fi 160GB Multimedia Player
None in stock

I fancy one of these, do these play xvids?
30gb is a bit too small for me, I'll have a hunt around for a 160gb.
#8
Yes they play xvids, you can also buy plug-ins to play lots of other types of files. You will need a purchase plug in to surf the net. Archos have decided to lower the price of these devices and make the money from plug-ins and tv on demand, which it will be offering soon

You can watch youtube on these devices or link via wireless with your pc and watch any files you have on that.

I don't think the 605wifi 160gb or the 4gb are released yet so they won't have stock. But it's worth the wait.

After doing some research I have discovered that the 4gb version will also take memory cards.

wow thats a pretty good deal!

£20.00 £20 voucher when you spend £150 or more on anything at dabs.com When you order on or before 31.07.07

just logged into my dabs account and found this voucher in my account! I suggest people with existing accounts check theirs!

Free postage this weekend too.

Meaning that for me it would be £168.85 -£20= £148.85 -3% quidco
= £144.39 or close enough.

Hot bargain!
#10
Only got £10 voucher on mine!
#11
can anyone confirm, that these will or will not play avi/xvid directly without converting to its own format?? cheers........
#12
I have downloaded xvid movies and some series to my 604wifi and they played perectly as did the avi files.
I would go HERE for more information and definite answers.

Ive got a 504 (the previous series) and it plays pretty much anything you through at it with a few exceptions.

it wont play mpg files unless you buy a €20 plugin. and the same goes for xvid/divx files if they have ac3/DD soundtracks.
If the soundtracks are normal stereo itll play them just fine out of the box.

Just ordered this, now to sell my 504 :)

One tip that saved me some cash was that I purchased my plug-ins from the US store and saved a decent amount of cash. It may take a little while for them to appear on the US site but when they do you just buy them as normal and they send you a link to the software.

Plug-ins are tied to your device serial number so you cannot use a friends download.
#15
nice 1, thats one of the main reason i never got an archos ages ago, as i was always told to play existing avi/xvid's u can to reconvert them all, when all i wanted to do was just drag and drop...and watch :)

Is there anything stopping this being used for backing some of my data on my laptop. I currently have a 250gb My book but want one of these players. I could potentially sell my current external HD and use this instead.

I took a chance and ordered the 160Gb version at £253. It is due out in the US on September 1st so I am hoping it will be the same for the UK. It's worth waiting for. I just hope the screen is better than the mediocre one on the 504. If it as good as or better than the AV500/Gmini500 screen I will be very pleased.

Thanks to the OP.

correct me if i'm wrong but if this thing has enough juice to power one of these http://www.hotukdeals.com/forums/showthread.php?p=792360 then would'nt you be able to walk around with another 160 gig of movies that this device could use?

It's unlikely to be able to power an external hard drive.

The 4gb and the 160gb versions are not released yet. You should really call them to get an idea of delivery if you're thinking of the 30gb.

I'm now leaning towards the 4gb, it is the ony archos that will have a memory card slot (as well as 4gb built in) the battery should last longer (as it won't have to power the HD) and it will generate less heat. You can take SD Ram with extra films etc on, they're getting bigger and cheaper all the time.

Anyone that has used one will know that on a long haul flight the battery won't last and it is built in so you can't take a spare. There are battery powered chargers on ebay but not having used one I wouldn't know how efficient they are.

Am i right in thinking that you need to pay a further 30 euro for the web browser plug-in to go on the web?

Yes you'll cetainly have to pay for a few plug-ins, this is how Archos have managed to lower their prices (they claim)

But if you can wait you'll get the plug-ins cheaper on the US site, they will work as I did this with my 604wifi and saved £20 on a plug-in bundle.

No one has used one yet as they are new!! A claimed 5.5hrs for video and 17 for music not good enough for you? Why not take petrol generator?:-D

Well yes they have as the 30gb version is out :p Maybe your SA comments are best kept to yourself?

I usually spend 12 or more hours travelling on a plane with the usual 3 hour pre wait. So 5.5 hours is not enough for me. I also never listen to music on an archos so that's out.

As I said there is a battery powered charger on ebay that will charge these but not having used one I don't know if they are any good.
#28
Actually, the US Archos site will not allow the plug-ins to be purchased by non US buyers (will accept US credit cards only).
Non US Archos owners end up paying almost twice as much for the plug-ins.

Funny I bought some only a couple of months ago, unless they've blocked that loophole.

Just looked and it takes visa, I didn't complete the transaction, it looks pretty much the same as when I tried a couple of months ago. Have you tried going to www.archos.com, selecting online store and then selecting USA?

But have you got one as it was you who was claiming to have used one? If you haven't then how can you count your experiences on something different as valid?

Batteries being batteries will run out at some time. What would you consider a suitable life 12hrs, 24hrs a week?

I have used almost every generation up to an including the 604wifi Mr Pedantic, I think my experinces in that should count in some way. My point was (and this was missed by you) the 4gb vesion should outrun the 160gb version as it does not have to spin a HD. I think 5.5hrs is damned good, amost brilliant consdering what earlier models achieved. Although I always travelled wth spare batteries.

Tried to buy the plug-in bundle for my Gen 04 from the US site a few months ago and the transaction could not be completed because during payment, they ask for credit card address and only US addresses are valid.
Ended up buying from the Uk site for a much higher price.

The 29.98 Euro price for the Web browser plug-in is a rip off.

I used a hotel address in Miami, it worked a treat. Worth a go. Just look up any hotel in the states and use their zip code and address.
#34
don't forget there is no dock with this so u got to buy that separate if u want to play on your tv or record anything from your tv...
#35
Do they play .avi files?

And is the software on them good? Do they crash and whats the general quality of the product like? Is it up tothe standard of iPods in terms of technical quality?
#36

#37

So it looks suspiciously like they made a typo in the original price.

My order has changed from expected stock on 3rd Aug to 14th Aug now :(

ive preordered a 160GB one from dabs. they had it down as expected in 8-10 days which is obviously **** as archos say they wont be out till the start of september.

does anyone have any experience of dabs for early release products? ive emailed them for confirmation but got the usual 'it will be updated on the website' pat on the back.

cant wait either way but ill get it elsewhere if they are known to be unreliable

thanks
