Don't let refurbished put you off .... i called them and they told me they are direct from the factory, they have a warranty with Archos and they are as good as new ... and i say THEY... as they have loads of them ...... ( sorry to sound giddy but i missed out on a creative zen deal this week and this looks like a perfect alternative)

I've looked around an can't see these new for under £100 ...most are £130 ..

These are flakey at the best of times, with very poor battery life ... I would be hesitant of a refurb

i had an archos yeas ago and it was quite flakey so got put off for a few years ... but i've read quite a lot of good reviews on this one ... but the batter life does crop upo a bit ... i hear theres an additional 3rd party battery pack though which sorts it out

reliability has been fine with my 3 year old archos AV500.. more worried that it's pixmania, and only 4GB storage built in is far too small for a media device. crazy. maybe the idea is that you swap SD cards a lot??
they have a 20GB new for £99, still too small but better

Can you put the price in the title please ?
#5
yeah i saw that .. but i have boat loads of SD cards ... and as you say .. if swapping ain't an issue then i'd rather make the saving...

PS ... what's the audio quality like on yours... the reviews seem to say better than ipod ... ??

the iPod is NOT the benchmark for sound quality, in fact it is the opposite. You'll find that if you listen to many players side by side with the iPod, it'll sound plain crummy. I have never owned an Archos, but I know first hand that this is true of Cowon, iRiver and some Creative products. I've heard 2nd hand, good things about Archos sq.

Sound quality is good, I had issue more with device OS being extremely flakey and the Wifi killing the battery

to be fair though, doesn't wifi kill batteries on most devices?

MUCH quieter than an iPod. For most people, who think volume == quality, they will hate this compared to an iPod. I'm no audiophile, and it sounded OK - much like an ipod - but quieter!

Do i have to pay for sum add on for it to play .avi?
#13
You can play DivX and XVid AVI's without paying for any plugins (provided they arent encoded with AC3 audio, in which case you'd need the Cinema plugin)

I have had three of these and always got 5 hours+ battery life watching videos and i can only imagine the Flash memory version is even better, If you want something for browsing or audio i would look elsewhere ( too small for browsing and too big for mp3 player) Everyone seem to forget what this does best ,for downloading and watching Iplayer programmes nothing comes close,
