I have had the Archos 5 and Archos 7 and the android interface is not very good , no android market, the screen being resistive is nowhere near as good as a capacitive screen, the screen suffers badly in bright sun. Thats why i sold them and use my phone for the internet now.

another android device with a vesrion less than 2.0, they need to get these devices particularly mobiles sorted. get the latest and greatest on and stop the fragmentation.

Android .. good .. Archos .. also good ............ - but 7 inch screen - why so small??????
banned#5
Archos = broken by design. Monumental fail.

Archos in the tech world are like the 3 network in the mobile world when it comes to customer services or lack of. After problems with the 605, I won't buy Archos again.

can anyone recommend a 9" tablet similar to this? I'd like to be able to put linux on it should have wifi/bluetooth microsd or sd slot and USB slot.
#8
shame that archos missed the boat with trying to build their brilliant kit into a mobile phone. they were ahead of the game for years but with the advent of smartphones like the samsung galaxy s the end is nigh.

Another ex-605 owner here. My sister and I got one each for christmas a few years ago, both suffered the exact same crackling fault whenever WiFi was enabled so both went back for a refund. Would've been just for a replacement if not for the fact that Archos like to gouge you for everything. They call it "making your device unique". It actually means you had to pay £30 for a wall charger, £20 to enable the web browser, £20 to enable the video codecs, £80 to enable the PVR functions, and etc and etc.

This, the device itself probably sells for £46, the extra £100 is the unlock code for the power switch.

A lot of reviews of this on the web, and lot of people showing it in use on YouTube.

For the money, and the feature I think it is a reasonable price....

And I think that the addition of an Micro SD slot, means you can easily upgrade the memory, an 8GB card doesn't cost much, so you can easily take it to 16GB for not a lot of money, plus you can add more memory for more money.....

Compare this to the Eken M001 and other tablets that have been looked at on HUKD and this Archos isn't THAT bad. For starters it's 8GB of internal memory versus the 2GB that you get with the Chinese no-name tablets. Also you get a reasonable battery life of 5 - 7 hours versus the 2 max that you get with the clones.

I won't buy one however as like a lot of folks, I waiting for the flood of cheap ARM11, Android 2.1 tablets to arrive from China. Then I'm definitely going to pounce.

hum - bought the IRiver for £45 - not sure I'll move to this one just yet - great price though!!

Bought quite a few Archos products, last one was Archos 7 always hoped theyd get better. Rubbish after sales, no upgrades, rather develop new devices than develop updates and support for existing products. Rubbish touch screen.
#14
can you transfer sky recorded programmes onto this
#15
You should be able to if it is anything like the 605 Wifi with TV dock, i have that setup and it works well getting stuff off my sky box, the only down side is i have to run the show and setup the record on the Archos so effectively watch it on your TV while you get it off your Sky+ box, would be so much easier if the Sky+ boxes had a USB port.

These can be hacked to access all of the compatible free or paid for apps on the Google Market place. It actually works very well as is, just so long as you know what you are buying beforehand i.e. it is a home tablet so no phone, 3g, gps etc. Otherwise, what it does do, it does very well. I am hopeful that there will be a hack to get Android 2 upgrades on it in the not too distant future but as is I am happy I got one.

This Archos 7 is £153.75 delivered. For £159.99 delivered, you can get the Archos 5 8GB from Amazon...

The Archos 5 screen is much smaller (4.8") but you get so much more in the package (GPS, Digital TV, FM radio, 256MB of RAM, an ARM Cortex 8 processor with DSP processor, Android 1.6 and a decent battery. This gets much better reviews than the Archos 7.

Regardless of this, I'll keep my wallet in my pocket for a while yet. I think there are better and cheaper tablets yet to emerge.

I have archos 5g with sim slot build in, excellent machine, downside is no support at all and no flash 10 support but sim give you extremelly well portability and radio is very strong, no problem whatever, great machine overall, no gps or android but to be hones I prefer to have broadband on the move in such small device rather than gps
#19
You're right - no GPS even though the Archos site makes a big play of this!! It sounds like you need to pay a 39 Euros fee to unlock the GPS software. Can you confirm this? The Archos site itself doesn't say how much you have to pay.

I love my Archos 605 and am well disposed to Archos as a brand but l just cannot work up enthusiasm for this device. The price is good but on reading some of the reviews, it just isn't a finished product yet, for example, it runs an old version of Android. Archos doesn't have a good track record of on-going support for existing products - so this is not for me. Regrettably, l agree with the other posters, who believe there are better products on the way to market, so i'm holding off for now and not voting this deal either way.

Hi, even with the mixed reviews this seems really good! But with so many people saying better things are available could you tell me what as I want something like this asap! Thanks.

I can highly recommend a smartphone like the samsung galaxy s - does pretty much anything most archos players can do (plays 720p video) - I've been a fan of archos products from the start and still use my 605 but these types of media players will become obsolete with more powerful smartphones.

Dell Streak is the phone with the biggest screen @ 5 inches, with reportedly better battery life than the Galaxy

You will have to wait til September for the 2.1/2.2 update to Android though, as it's currently running 1.6...
