Dont forget with these units you need to buy additional plugins for the internet and to play various video formats. hardly cheap either each plugin is around £19+

It's not an iPad. Move along, please.

An iPad supports Flash through Skyfire too :)

Let's rate the item and not how it compares to other items tho - this is a bargain forum not a pissing contest..

Seems a gd price to me. Voted hot

Just to point out the screens resolution is actually 800 x 480 so nowhere near 720p. Little misleading in the description. It can supposedly play 720p files though...

This is a cheap alternative, I personally couldn't buy an i pad and trust my son with it but this is bang on, updated it to have google apps android market easy as pie

Which set of instructions did you use to enable Android Market access on it but also have you used AppBrain on it at all?

Thanks, SB

Not a bad device but would prefer to pay more for a model with a capacitive touch screen

This is cheap as it has been replaced by the capacitive Archos 70

It's an iPad alternative in the same way that a whisk is a food processor alternative.

Would appear to have expired, as the price has gone up - might be best leaving it for a couple of days in case it drops again, as this has happened before.

Edit - Showing as back down to £129.00p again. :D

Nice prediction

They (Amazon) have been doing that to a lot of products of late - a good example would be the Samsung Story 1.5TB USB 2 Hard Drive, which had daily price increases & decreases...all a bit odd! :D

Some quotes from the reviews:

"after two days of fighting withit I returned to shaid shop "

"would not get one of these if it were free"

"wont play my own movies or some music"

"Cannot recommend this item"

"So in short, it does have potential, but from what i read it does everything that the Archos 5 Internet Tablet does on a bigger screen, but very badly. "

"don't touch this one with a bargepole, its really not worth the bother, and defo not worth the money "

"its really very poor "

"the android system which this device uses (1.5) is quite dated now"

"The first thing you'll notice when handling it is that it feels a bit cheap. It's constructed completely from plastic, and the screen feels a bit tacky. "

Amazon use a dynamic pricing structure that adjusts prices according various parameters - sales, interest on item page, price comparison to competitors etc .
They've been doing it for a few years.

i've had my eye on the archos 101 and i'm keen to get it BUT their recent update to 2.2 Froyo has been nothing short of terrible. They have completely screwed up a lot of the software and it needs sorting out desperately. When and if this happens, I'd recommend that we all go and buy archos 101s (or perhaps this 70 model), but until then, avoid. Keep your eye on, but avoid.
#29
oh excuse me this is an archos 7, not the new 70.
#30
interest on item page

So Prof. does that mean that many clicks on an item's page causes Amazon to increase the price? Or is it the opposite, as in people are clicking but not buying so they lower the price?
#31
get an ipod touch!!!!
#32
Worth noting this is an Archos 7, not an Archos 70 (the newer version and Gen8 tablet).
#33
I'll never buy another Archos product again.
They hobble their gear then expect you to pay extra for capabilities most stuff has out of the box.
The build quality is nothing like it used to be, customer support is non existant and the last MP3 player I had off them didn't even have a charger, you had to pay extra for it oO
It would take 24 hours to charge over a USB lead or you could fork out for a charger to get decent charge speeds.

I don't care if you can get cheap unlock codes from ebay, it's their philosophy of treating the customer like dirt that's put me off.

My better half has one of these herself. If you buy this device and use it "as is", then you might be disappointed after using it awhile. It's sluggish, the screen response is poor and the video playback is extremely frustrating in that it is very picky in the type of avi files it will actually play.

However, as reported above, if you flash the device (easy to do) using knightdominion v.3 on the ArchosFans website, you will find most of your problems will disappear. the response improves dramatically, the touch screen is a great improvement. The general speed of the device in opening files, books etc is much faster which makes the whole user experience that much easier on the whole.

Regarding video files, I have been using Xillisoft Video Converter Ultimate 6 to convert all of my movies and TV episode downloads etc and can say it works brilliant and quickly at the conversion. Everything plays perfect every time so far! The only downside is subtitles although, as mentioned, there is a workaround apparently but I have yet to try it out myself as we don't need subtitles yet!

So using the device as it is shipped is a poor effort from Archos, who really should know better than to put out a device with such problems, that will frustrate the hell out of you. If you can read and follow instructions, then flash the device and you will reap the benefits.

Just to point out that Archos themselves have issued an update that actually makes the device quicker and feel more responsive, especially the touch screen and keyboard. You don't get the official Android Market App, but if you don't need that, then I can recommend this update as it is very easy to do. I personally use the firmware update from the user "Himself" on the ArchosFans forums, I believe it is v0.27. This is also quick and has Android Market installed too. You will probably need to do a lot of reading and be reasonably computer literate to install it, but it isn't too difficult. Don't forget that the forum is there to help anyone along the way.

Voted hot from me, I paid a lot more just a few months ago!!!

Well spotted sherlock.

But that maybe the only thing this device has going for it

Or you could download VLC player from app store for free to watch divx....

Not heard too many good things about the Archos 7, and battery life isn't that good either. I really don't like Apple, but have to admit the iPad is great, mainly because other manufactures can't get their act together to get something better...
