That's a very good price!

Looks great, though a bit too big for my needs. Good bit of video of it in use here...

Certainly not pocket sized and wieghs a fair bit for a portable player but great price, also seem to be a fair few available at stores in the Kent area if anyone still looking to pick one up
#5
Not bad. Here's an alternative for £119.99 Different specs of course except the HDD. Depends what you're after.
#6
ive got the 605 and is great for streaming movies from my pc
although you have to pay for plugs ins for internet browser, and to be able to play different formats
but can be bought on fleabay for about £20 for about 5
alot cheaper than archos direct
and each one is unique to your model
on the whole they are great bits of kit

depends what file type your movies are, you might need to buy a plugin which is about 15 quid per plugin to play them. on these older archos's you also have to buy the web browser plugin to surf the web which comes included with the latest archos's
#12
although this is a good price, you could get a netbook for around this price (e.g. acer aspire one), which is only a little bigger when closed + can do a million more things and will do everything this does but better!

the only advantages i can think of for the archos over a netbook is the battery life for music/video.

one other thing is that with the archos... wouldn't it be a bit big and annoying to be holding in your hands if you were playing a movie for example? (netbook solves that problem as well!)

no software needed for streaming movies
plays avis no problems
to play mp4s or other formats then you will need the plug ins
also for the web browser
but as i said earlier dont buy them from archos
get them from a well known auction site that sounds like flea pay
as they are only about £20 for about 4 or 5 plugins
think the web broswer is about £15 on its own from archos
i can stream my only fools and horses that i riiped from my original dvds and watch them on my 605
never get board of them

I can confirm they play on the 605 without a plug in

this is off the argos website regarding the plugins

Can a acer record movies from TV??. I have very little knowledge about these kind of operations. just curious. Dont know if there are any software which take the signals from TV.

I use mine to watch stuff while down the gym. Couldn't use a netbook in the same way. Also use it when we are away to plug into a hotel tv (via scart) so that we can watch films if we are staying in at night.

Finally on long journeys, the battery life is approx 5 hours for films....

no the latest equivalent model is the archos 7, the 705 came out in 2007

I got one of these at this price last week, it's a nice piece of kit, oh finds watching films on planes/trains etc a bit small on the ipod touch so with the nice big screen this is a lot better. Tried to put dvd on it that I had on laptop from putting on ipod touch but it asked for the plug-in to make it work so ordered from flea pay canada and waiting for the guy to send them. Will probably need some help but archosfans.com seems pretty informative..

to have full functionality ie use a dock as DVR to record from your sky/tv or whatever you will need the dock too, currently HALF PRICE at Argos but good luck if you can find one...ebay going for silly prices...so...if you don't need the dock functionality then a good deal.....;-)
#32
Also remember you can use any points you have built up on your nectar card at argos, useful for a bit of money off......
#33
Got the 605 wifi.... is absolutely amazing! I dunnowhere i'd be without it!
#34
when currys were doing the 605 with 40 gig hdd for £89.99
and the 80 gig for £124.99
alot of people were buying the 40 gig and had an 80 gig inside
wonder if it will happen with this one too
also makes me laugh that its classed as an mp4 player but you have to buy the plugin to play mp4s
#35
remember these only have a display of 260,000 colors instead of 16 million colours, my mate got one the other day but also has the 605, and he reckons u can tell the difference on the 705 (260,000 colors) compared to 16 million on the 605....

Can i Upgrade the hard drive size... what's the kind of drive they use inside....?

Not too big at all. On the train in to work, I sit it on the seat tray (it comes with a pull out stand.) When I get on the tube, I just change from watching movies to listening to music, and shove it in my pocket.

The guy from Canada sends you a zip file and tells you the very simple steps to install the plug ins. Got mine from him in 2 days, although they cost me around £30 last year and you can now get them for less than £20. In the meantime, try converting the DVD to avi. Takes up much less space, around 700mb for a 2 hour film.
