A New Release from Archos, the Archos 80 Cobalt. Never heard of it until last night when looking for a tablet for my Dad in my local Tesco Spytty Newport.

Spotted this in Tesco and after testing it out with browsing and watching videos I thought it was perfect for his needs of browsing Autotrader and eBay plus the 4:3 display is more user friendly for him.

Possibility of extra discounts are obviously available at Tesco, I used a £5 off £50 spend voucher so paid £94 plus Clubcard points.

HOT or COLD? You decide. Hope it helps someone.

Yes it has physical buttons for power, volume up\down.

I am new to Android so prob not the best to review the device but all I can say is I am not disappointed. It is very responsive, fast and there are no screen issues. Sound is tinny so best used with headphones. And it takes about 10 seconds to boot from fully shutdown but instant from standby. It utilises active wallpapers without any impact on web browsing, playing games or streaming movies etc The screen quality overall is faultless. Playing HD movie files look very good.

I have installed a few apps such as Netflix, Skygo, iPlayer, Skype, Evernote & Dead Trigger and all work perfectly. Web browsing is faultless and at times faster than my iPad. I have not noticed any apps that say they have problems.. anything in particular you want me to install?

I have installed a 64GB SD Class 10 card and it works without issue. Taken photo's which are not the best but I suppose for a 2mp camera they are as perfect as they can be and the camera seems to be very slightly off angle by say 2mm so you have to very slightly tilt the device to get a straight picture. Video is however very good quality when recorded from the same camera.

No updates are available as yet so for now it is ISC 4.0.4

All in all I have recommended my brother in law save himself some money and buy my niece one of these instead of the samsung.

Noticed this on Tesco Direct, looked like a good deal and ordered one. Was looking for a cheap tablet for my daughters Christmas.
I’ve only had it out for a couple of hours to play with – but comments so far:
Build quality – feels rock solid. Quite heavy though. No screen ripples or flexes.
Styling – plain and inoffensive. It’s not badly done, and some bits are nice such as the speaker grille and chromed buttons, but it is very neutral.
Screen – screen is fine. Display is bright and viewing angles are good. Like the larger 1024 x 768 pixel display. You see a lot of 800x400 or so displays at this price point, so the larger pixel display is good. It seems responsive and smooth, but shows fingerprints badly. It’s not a patch on current top of the range screens on say an S3 or iphone – but hey, its £99!
Performance – again, just fine. Wouldn't say it’s extremely fast – but it seems to run everything smoothly. There is just a slight shudder when swiping home screens. Think top end Android phone from about a year or so ago. The 1gb ram helps here – and if it gets Jelly Bean, this should smooth out the homescreens. I’m generally impressed with what it can do. Internet and browsing good – wifi range is also good. I’ve put on Dolphin HD for a browser rather than the stock.
Flash isn’t on board when you take it out of the box. Checked on the Play store, and couldn’t see it. Did a google search for “flash player 11 APK download” and I was surprised to see one of the results was a link to the official Flash player on the Play store! Clicked on it, and downloaded it from the store no problems. This is good as if there are any updates, it will get notifications. Checked – and Moshi Monsters worked fine (phew!)
Catchup TV and youtube worked smoothly. However – iplayer was a mess. You just get bumped to the mobile web site. Constant buffering, and sound and vision out of sync. If you look at the comments for iplayer – lots of devices have the same issues with it so there are lots of low ratings. I think a large part of the issues with it is probably down to the app rather than the tablet – but at the moment it is unwatchable on this tablet.
Went to order a case from ebay – and on checking the spec with a seller – the usb port is a ‘slave’ port – so can’t plug in keyboards. This is a pity – and is the main hardware issue I’ve found with it.
Summary – very impressed for the price point. Seems good build quality and the ram and processor speed should give it a degree a future proofing. Fingers crossed for an update to Jelly Bean which would make it much smoother, and for the BBC to fix their iplayer app!

As far as flash player is concerned if you have previously installed it on another device, when you go to the play store and go to the items you have downloaded you will be able to download it to the cobalt 80 also as it will be in the list with the install option hope thuis helps

Just bought one of these via Tesco Direct and noticed parallel lines on the display about 1cm apart, they're there when it's turned off too so they're on the glass. Has anyone else noticed this ?

sound like that's the touchscreen though you shouldn't really be able to see it when on unless you have a bright light shining on it and a dark background and even then they should only be very very thin lines

Well "must things" that are given at Christmas could be given as a cash present- then at least they can get what they wish i.e. an Archos tablet at a sale price?

Many thanks for Screen Adjuster. I do feel though that I shouldn't have to install more software to get it to work properly, it should work out of the box.

Is it normal that when a new tablet is released, half the apps out there don't work on it?? At the moment it's feeling rather like I have a £99 paperweight and I'm becoming more inclined to return it, which is a shame.

Between "100,000 - 500,000" tablet users have installed Screen Adjuster so you are not alone. But yes, you should return the Archos asap.

Also how much will it be on Boxing Day?

Bought the tablet as a gift, have had a play and I think it's excellent for price - I own a Nexus 7 and iPad 2 so have at least some experience with tablets. However it does have that issue with some faces looking slightly pixillated / low res - mentioned on a couple of posts above. Does the screen adjuster app really fix that?

I just increased the colours slightly, I don't have it with me now but the settings was something like Red 9, Green 8, Blue 7. It still is a bit dull to be honest but much better than it was.

Doubt it. It's part of the one day sale on boxing day, to be advertised on Christmas eve and Christmas day. Reckon it will go down to maybe £70.
