hot hot hot! AV500 is a cracking piece of kit, plays divx, xvid (although not AC3 encoded sound). I can't imagine a train/plane journey without it.

Well the £10 wasn't a problem to find, just the rest!

It's the same resolution - 480x272, but I think it's a slightly larger screen, so may not look quite as good, but bigger. And with it being a dedicated video player, I'm sure it'll look better anyway, especially since PSPs until recently wouldn't allow full screen resolution playback.

Am I right in thinking this isn't compatible with vista? I'd love to buy this for my fella as one of his many xmas presents as he travels out the country quite alot. Anyone?

Although it doesn't say Vista on the requirements section, I'd struggle to see why it wouldn't work, all it will appear as is a mass storage device to drop files into I would imagine, no reason why that shouldn't happen on Vista.

Does it play .avi files?

I've had one of these for a while now. It's a superb piece of kit. Build and screen quality are outstanding. I use it mainly for divx playback on long plane journeys etc and the size of the screen is just right. It's also handy for connecting up to the TV in a hotel or apartment when on holiday to keep the kids amused etc. There's a cable included for that purpose.

It also comes with the docking station to hook it up to your tv for use as a PVR. This is not included with most of the newer Archos models - some of which are also inferior spec-wise. I paid around £280 when I bought mine and feel it was worth every penny. At this price it's a steal. Don't hesitate if you're in the market for this type of player.

I own the 60gb model of the AV500 and I can tell you on vista/xp it just appears as an external hard disk when you plug it in.

Drag and drop compatible video/music/picture files and view them on your player/tv

I've had mine for 2 years and never had any problems, as someone else said, buy one and you'll never want to go on a journey without it again.

One or two more little questions..

Does it fit in the pocket as easily as say.. an iPod?

And what is the software and layout of the product like? Easy to manage and find files? etc.

And i take it you can create mp3 playlists?

*I need a new MP3 as my iPods finally broke after 4 years :(.. might aswell get one of these at this price!*

I will NOT be using it to record tv shows etc. So basically is this the best model to get for mp3/video playback?

Thanks!

Thanks for this post Edi but I've done some digging around and I think I'm going to go for the Archos 704 80GB for £295, think I'll have to raid my piggy bank for this one. I always end up spending money when I visit this site!

Better value for just another 62 quid or so, I think

You will need to buy plugins from the website if you want to play more formats liks AC3 audio and DVD rips

No, its much bigger than an iPod - but then would you want to watch things on a much smaller screen?

Yes, its laid out very well and easy to navigate.

Not 100% sure. I use mine for video only!

I dont record with mine either, but have used it to playback stuff on my plasma with excellent results. If I had a choice between an iPod and the Archos at double the price, I'd pick the Archos every time.

Have a look here for more details.

Thanks alot for your response.

But just to clarify. As I will never use this to record TV is it the best available price for an Archos still?

For example, if I wanted an Archos that just did video + mp3 playback and had £150ish as my budget, this would be the best one to get?

Thanks

I have the AV500 100 gig , excellent machine , picture quality is great ,
battery will last about 4 hours for video.
remember its also a mass storage device , drag and drop stuff from your pc.
I think the AV500 is more popular than the AV700

Too many variables!

Which screen size would be preferable.
What HD size would you need / like?

Its certainly a good price, for a great machine, but if you wanted a bigger drive or larger screen, then it wouldn't be the best one for you to buy.

But if the screen size and HD size are right for you, then yes go for it.

The AV500 has a far better screen than the later 504. I have never seen a clearer sharper screen. Buy one you will not be disappointed.

I had the 80gb version of this little beauty last year but unfortunately the rocker switch jammed after 6 months and I had to send it back. My wife then bought me the AV500 30gb version from QVC a few months ago for £17 more than this deal but with a spare battery included. It really is a terrific picture and the WMA/MP3 audio sound quality is excellent through the headphones. I can't say the same for the built-in mono loudspeaker but I rarely use that anyway. The sound recording facility is also very good and being able to record straight off the TV with the included docking pod is also a big plus. I love it and take it on all my travels. The converting of DVD's is a bit of a long process if you go for best quality but I now have 18 of my favourite feature films (in AVI format) and all my music collection stored on it. You can also copy photos from your digital camera direct to it without the need for a PC.

I doubt if you will be disappointed if you buy one. It's a great bit of kit.

I have an Archos 404 and the wife has a 404 Cam and they have been great ! From watching movies on your Tv to listning to music in bed - The Archos is much better than any Ipod etc
Plus my Archos survived my Wife throwing it across the room which is a bonus in my book. :)

A quick question...can you record a Sky programme using this Archos player? For example, if I'm watching Sky Sports, would I be able to record a Premiership match onto the player's HD and then transfer the recorded data onto my PC for editing purposes? Any responses welcome...

Also, any comments on compatibility with Sky Plus?
#32
Was just about to buy one of these but it's now listed as "sold out" :-(
#33
Damn, sold out as mentioned above.

Found it on eBuyer if anyone is interested - £159.99 with free delivery.
