The AV 700 40Gb is available in Staples for £199 at the moment.

Thanks for the info Tenex :) The more I look at these Archos, the more I'm getting to like them...

Rayman, any ideas what the tax charges are, my workmate bought an multimedia center style unit off ebay for around £60, but later got a letter from the courier asking for £40 in taxes/VAT charges...

Workaholic - my guess is that if it is shipped from France or any other EU country, there should be no other duties/taxes to be paid.

Rayman, i too am very tempted (by the AV 700)! However, will a cheap and small laptop not be useful alternative?

My first MP3 player was an Archos 20Gb - rough tough and thoroughly reliable. Good CS too.

Yeah :) The website says the prices include taxes, so should be okay. However, delivery is from 18.73 €

rlmc a laptop is great but these are so much smaller and lightweight. Take a look at the pdf file here: http://www.archos.com/products/video/av_700/pdf/AV_700_en.pdf It's surprising how much the AV 700 does :)

I got myself an AV700 from Staples for £199.99 a couple of weeks ago. I like it a lot, but its a bit heavier and bulkier than you might think. Certainly not something that you are going to slip into your pocket.

However, it is incredibly versatile, playing a number of audio and video formats. The picture quality isn't as good as the AV500 or the new Generation 4 series, but its good enough for me.

Thanks for the feedback stephenashforth :) It's appreciated!

I agree with rayman. I do have a laptop (laptops to be precise) and the biggest problems are size and battery life. Especially the latter - I had to buy an additional battery (I spend a lot of time "in the field", so I need to rely on battery-driven laptop).
Another thing is usability. I have MDA Vario, so I can play MP3s on it. But limited storage space, problematic controls and battery life forced me to buy a 'proper' MP3 player - Cowon iAudio 30Gb.

Do the video players play divx/avi or just mpg? I really want something small and portable to play avis on the move...but I think I'm right in saying that IPOD videos and teh Archos don't? Anyone got any recommendations?

I returned an iPod video because the screen was really too small for video. What I did see was good quality though.

I'm not sure about a PC but on a Mac the conversion for playback on an iPod via Handbrake is extremely simple and speedy.

My Cowon does Divx but do you really want to watch video on 1.5" screen? Even my phone's 2.5" screen is too small for it.

but surely no-one actually uses these items,it is to impress females until you get a car?.
#16
You need to revisit that idea you have - I don't think females are impressed by technology...

I can't speak for all Archos models, but I have had an AV400 and have an AV700 and they both play DivX and XVid files.
