does anyone know if this can be used as a "host" device for connecting a PSP to it and transfering files over to the PSP without using a Laptop?
#2
is this the new model or older one?

It was this one, then the 605 series and now the 5 series.

So this is a couple of generations old but at least (I believe) yyou can record directly without a docking station but it's heavey.

The AV500 did used to have a host function if i remember correctly from when i had one. Qucik search says that this is correct. It supports USB mass storage devices.

I know it can copy from external device to v500
(Was on QVC and copy picture from camera to v500)
but unsure if can do it the other way.
Will look on forums, will post if find anything

I have the 60Gb version of this. If you look at the pictures, you'll see it has two ports, USB A and USB B. USB B is how you connect it to a PC, USB A is how you connect it to other devices. USB A needs an adaptor cable to bring it to a normal-sized USB port, I think this comes with the device.

When you connect another device to it you get file manager utility which lets you copy files and folders in both directions. I've used it to copy photos off my camera's memory card each day on holiday, then copy selected ones back to use in a photo printing machine. It won't, however, provide much power to USB devices. It's okay with your card reader or any self-powered device like a PSP, but it can't power a portable USB-powered hard disk.

It should come with a video out cable for connecting to the composite video input of a TV and a remote control. Picture quality is as good as composite video gets (i.e. pretty poor) but watchable. It's been a godsend for me for connecting to hotel TVs when I'm working away from home!

Your wrong you forgot the 604 which came before the 605, it comes with everything including a dock unlike the subsequent models which you had to buy docks and add ons. I have the 60 gb

This is not a bad deal.
This model is called the AV500 not V500 (Can't CDiscount read the box properly?)
It dates back to 2005.
Dimensions are 7.6 x 12.4 x 1.8 cm
Weight is 255 g
Comes with the leads to record and output to TV (records in DivX)

I also have a 30gb AV500 which is great piece of kit. Came with TV dock etc which you have to buy separately with newer Archos models. May be getting a bit dated but it's a robust, high quality player with a superb screen. I've seen all the newer models come and go and haven't yet been tempted to part with the AV500. At this price it's a steal imho.

How do you record a DVD onto this? Do you have to record as the DVD plays or is there a better way?

Just added voucher code for £20 credit back into account on a £100+ spend!

Correct. Otherwise known as OTG. (On the go). I never did manage to get the correct cable for mine to do this. Bought mine secondhand - so not sure if it comes as standard. Any ideas where to get the correct lead?

There's a few on eBay as "USB Mini-A Adaptor" or "USB OTG mini adaptor". They convert the mini USB A port to a full-sized USB B socket for devices. Important to note, this is not the same as cables that come with MP3 players, digital cameras etc. to connect devices to a PCs - the miniature USB end is a different shape.

I had this 80gb model 3 years ago until a couple of the selector rocker switch controls suddenly locked on me after I'd only had it 6 months. Got my money back and bought the cheaper, slimmer and slightly more stylish 30gb version which I still have and always take on holiday with me. The Av500 may be old stock now but the screen is top quality as is the audio through the earphones. The inbuilt microphone is also high quality and works well. The only poor points are that the audio quality through the inbuilt loudspeaker is rubbish and it was too easy to switch on the 80gb Av500 accidently while in it's case because the on/off button protuded slightly from the other controls so any pressure on the front of the case could switch it on without you knowing.

It comes with cables and a dock that you link the AV500 to the DVD player. You then have to record the DVD as it plays .... and to be honest, is a PITA especially as it encodes it so that the ONLY device it'll play back on it the AV500.

Having said that, the AV500 is still a grand piece of kit. I've taken my across Europe, 3 trips to Florida and it comes with me to / from work everyday. It allows me to keep up-to-date at lunch with the TV shows / movies that I've missed.

Its older than old - its ancient!!!!

The one advantage this one has over the newer ones - it plays DiVx out of the box. No need to fork out extra for plugins to play files which you do on on the newer models. Mine also came with its own simple dock to connect to a TV to act as a video player / recorder. Again - add an extra £50 for that on the newer ones. (Though I didnt read what comes with this one - so check first and dont assume!)

don't know where you heard that from, i've got a 605, & it supported divx (good job, as that was the only videotype i had). i had a AV500 at one point too, but it died on me last year. it lasted a couple of years though, & was used most days, so i got my moneys worth from it.

all in all, i'm much more satisfied with the 605, than i was with the AV500.

as for ipods, i don't go near 'em, i hate having to use itunes.

the archos 704 wi-fi 160gb is only £67.76 on the following link. its a later model, so in price terms does this make sense??

Doesn't make sense to me.
I'll avoid it as I can't find anything about them.
