These are an amazing little piece of kit. I have had one now for almost 3 yrs and the only issue i have is that the battery life has fallen to under 3hrs with a full charge but you can pick up new batterties on ebay for under 20 quid. The unit itself and good and tough, mine has been on some rough trips and its still working. Soooo simple to use and its drag and drop windows explorer type setup for music is a million times better than the ipod which i recently purchased. If you even need a little 20gb Hdd for data storage this is the job for you.

This looks a superb deal, I'm a big fan of Archos devices and 20Gb would be handy for data as well. I already have a Sandisk E280 which is a pretty good little player but only half the capacity and no file system browser.

I have a voucher from a few weeks ago, are these still valid or have they now expired?

I'll check what stores have these and post back tomorrow as I work for Argos.

Vouchers have stopped now though, yesterday was the last day actually.

Bad experience with this.. overheats fast and then just shuts itself down.. you have to wait for it to cool until you can start playin music again.
#13
I presume this cant play video as i cannot see it mentioned anywhere?
#14
I have the previous version. Superb sound if you upgrade the headphones. Bargain.

Rockbox will soon sort that. :>

It's dot org rather than dot com and 'soon' is debateable, I've been following it for a while and there doesn't seem to have been much progress.

sorry .org yeah, and soon what?

http://build.rockbox.org/dist/build-sansac200/rockbox.zip is the sansa build.

http://www.rockbox.org/twiki/bin/view/Main/SansaE200Port is the wiki for it.

as you can see from the wiki, the only part not working in rockbox is the usb handler. Just use the original firmware (hold down the left button whilst booting) to copy files over.

If you read through the notes you'll see that although the usb handler is the only part not working, other sections are functional but not working fully. I've been monitoring that page for months and it hasn't changed, I doubt it will anytime soon. Even aside from that constantly flicking between the two firmwares would be a complete pain in the neck, it also doesn't double the Sansa capacity nor change the proprietary usb cable.

I like the sansa but will be picking up this archos tomorrow morning to run alongside the sansa.

That maybe so, but the sansa with rockbox on works fine and is fully usable. All other ports have problems too (some of which do annoy me a little) but that doesn't stop it being usable, and even more than that completely desirable (gapless playback, replaygain, FLAC support and crossfader are all things I can't do without in a mp3 player - yet are lacking in the official firmware of pretty much every player on the market).

I don't see how dualbooting is a "pain in the neck" - I do it all the time on my x5 and will do it on my partners sansa as soon as I get one. Holding down the left key (or in my case a long hold of the power button) when I want to stick new files on the player is hardly a big deal.

it also doesn't double the Sansa capacity nor change the proprietary usb cable.
And I never claimed it did, I was just giving an answer to you wanting a filebrowser instead of the utterly naff database view all players seem to be going with these days.

Don't be so defensive, it's not good for your heart... =]

And thats completely fair enough. There is no way I could run a flash based player as my main one either, 8gb just isn't enough (roll on 500gb 1.8" hd based players).

Personally I wouldn't get a archos player, but thats due to a bad experience with their players (archos jukebox multimedia years ago. I'm sure they have improved now but I still don't like the styling of their players (as they tend to be big, ugly bulky things - thats simply an opinion though).

Doesn't stop it from being a nice price though. :>

I'm not being defensive (that's yourself you're thinking of judging by your previous post to say the least) - I was just making it clear that I have already looked into the Rockbox option and it is not suitable for me.

I've used the Archos players for years and consistently found them to be excellent...

...until now, I picked up the XS204 this morning and it started off well, but I've loaded it up with music and the quality is appalling, I'm fairly sure mine is faulty as there's no way this could get the reviews it does if all were the same. For those who have bought one of these, how are you finding the music quality? On mine, it distorts horribly if there's any bass at all - I've tried different tracks, different headphones, different equaliser settings but it's all the same.

Going to take it back to Argos tomorrow, hopefully the next one will be ok.
