Brilliant for my netbook, thanks
#2
Hope this is in stock - saw one comment review -

"DVD drives aren't exactly rocket science any more. Connects via a USB drive so its plug and play. I was actually after a bog standard external DVD drive so all the other stuff is probably overkill for me. But at that price, who cares. It is a bit large so its not something you would take along with your netbook (which is what I needed it for). There are probably smaller drives around but Argos is close, it was available and it looked reasonable value. If it had been smaller, probably would have given it 4 or 5 stars"

So, hope it's not too bulky!

Looks just the ticket as an extra for sharing between laptop and upstairs PC... Might be worth doing some AVF research 1st, but £30 is good for any ext DVD let alone a light-scribe number (although I don't think its a feature I'd be likely to make use of), so gets voted with a lot of warmness making it just about hot!!!

You will need to connect the dvd drive and camcorder to a computer as the drive will not work alone. Lightscribe is for putting images or titles on the label side of the disc, so when you open the box you can see whats on the disc. Hope this helps.
#15
If you having trouble getting one they are on fleabay for the same money + P&P!

So basically it just labels the disc so u know whats on it? Is that correct?
I normally just write on it with a special pen ... or is that just cd's??? (sorry).

Clever stuff. I'm sure I'd love it if I had it. For a week or two. Then I'd just stop using it, once the novelty wore off. ;-)
I'd imagine you can use normal disks in this drive and not bother etching them . But if you were to do that then there's cheaper options, of course.

I do the same thing , capture DV footage onto the PC and transfer to DVD. Get hold of a Firewire card from ebay , very cheap they are and come with cable , software . I use Pinnacle 9 for capture and is a breeze to use . Once captured ,it will allow you to edit , add transitions ,background music , titles etc and write it straight to Disk . If you dont have an Internal DVD writer , this Philips writer would be ideal , providing you have USB 2 ports .The internals I use are Pioneer ............excellent writers but other makes do the same job .

Well this seems a great price! Nice find OP
Can anyone tell me if this drive can read / write Karaoke (CD+G) discs? Yes I know I could trawl the net for the tech specs of this drive but this site is usually so much more helpful :)

Just got the last one from Belle Vale (near Liverpool). Model is SPD3900CC and it is also DVD RAM compatible :)
#30
To those who have bought the drive, what are your impressions? I bought a Liteon external drive from Argos last month but returned it as the build quality was awful. The bottom of the case was warped and it would rock from side to side when in use. I'm hoping this one is better quality.
#31
I have'nt used it yet ,but ordered some lightscribe disks yesterday from play . I will try it tonight with some of my RAM disks. Some say it's noisy , others not .We'll see.
#32
Took the plunge. The drive seems to be working well with my Macbook (using Toast 8 to burn the first dvd-rw right now). The drive is nearly completely silent. Cracking quality (so far).

Hi,

You have the time to collect till 30th Mar 2009. Reservation code will be given to the person who responds and request first !
#34
Forgive my knowledge but do you HAVE to use the special lightscribe disks or can i use normal dvd's?

How big is the box for this? I keep meaning to pick mine up but today I'm beer festivalling and don't want to be carrying anything around too big!
#37
I managed to get one, but sadly might not have it long as the two discs I've tried so far have resulted in my full disc image burning with very visible lines, almost as though there's spaces between the tracks as burnt..
Anyone else had this issue, or is everyone else's working fine?
I've used DataSafe 52x CD-R discs thus far.
One using the Lightscribe Template Labeler and the other Nero Essentials

I've had that on the two DVD+R disks I've burned (Kodak) but not the 2 DVD+RW disks I've burned. All the disks read well in my Macbook, the drive itself and my DVD player.

Out of curiosity, what software are you using to burn the disks?
#39
Oops! I just re-read what I wrote and I didn't make it clear that I was on the top side of the disc (not the data side).
I've been in contact with Philips, but they just told me to take it back to my vendor - which in this instance will mean a refund - d'oh!
I'm going to try my discs on another Lightscribe drive this week, just to make sure, but I suspect I won't have this Philips one for much longer - ah well, win some lose some.
