give the op a break!
HOT for a £99 branded camera for a novice

Dont like Samsung cameras, find them very slow and not much good (I have had two, now have a nikon which I love)
#8
Get a 6mpixel camera off ebay for £40, it'll take better pictures.
#9
not this argument again..
more pixels do not equal better images.

Bottom line..you can get a better Sony or Canon for £100 with some shopping around

Be careful to check the charger if it's the usb cable into the mains adaptor as Samsung have had a huge batch faulty. It should stay red while it charges but they have been flashing orange.

You'd have to have bin comitted if you paid £199 for one of these! The Ixus 80 will give better results if you can find anyone still with stock for under £100 like they were.

Still worth posting the deal as megapixels seems to be what sells cameras regardless of what you tell people about the lens and sensor!

LIAR! it's 99.99!

Just kidding, Heat added!
#12
Thats all well and good but one doesnt someone actually link to one rather than say you can get better!
#13
Great offer..rep added...I reserved one for collection tmrw... :-)
#14
It wont be as good as a DSLR but its not meant to be. Its £99 for a decent compact. If you can find cheaper then go for it, or if you like another camera more then go for it but this is half price which is a good offer. Treat it as such.
#15
samsung cameras in this price range are cheap and nasty, this ones similar to the one currys had during their "sale"
There are nicer cameras than this for the money - ok not 13mp but who needs that anyway.

OK. Read this review (Top rated budget cameras for 2008) (notice no Samsung made the list :whistling: )

A quick google shows the 'Top 3' are available for the same price (or cheaper) than this rubbish (not checked P&P - just looking at what is out there) - this Samsung camera is purely using it's 13mp count as a reason for making it half decent (and seems to worryingly be swaying most members on here judging by the heat!) - don't be blindly swayed by the apparent "half price" tag.

Canon Powershot A590 IS - £87.99

Panasonic LZ8 - £99.99

Sony W120 - £90.00

Happy Shopping.

That.

Looks OK, but you can get better quality from dedicated camera manufacturers (Canon, Nikon) for a similar price. The specs are fine, but 13mp is verging on stupid. The average camera user needs about 6mp tops, unless you regularly need to print top notch A0 sized images.

Have been looking for a new ultra compact recently, Currys are selling the Canon Ixus 90 for £150 instore, which I think is an excellent price for the latest member of the ultra compact range that consistently receives the best reviews. Had a Samsung one before and the shutter lag is very poor. But I don't think I'll get the Canon though because the menu is too confusing for me. Am leaning towards the Panasonic Lumix FS5 for around £130.

more **** with silly specs by crapsung again!

I was looking at this camera the other day thinking it looked good. My camera i have now is a Fuji finepix A201.
2 megapixels :-D

So why is 13mp not better then 6 megapixels
#21
I looked at this one too the other day. after googling, I found that there other places selling it for about a 15quid more (£200 regular is a pipe dream! maybe 1 year ago)
I also saw this camera mentioned in one of the other deal forums from a post a few months ago for around the same price.
#22
Id shop around , kodak 9mp in asda and fujitsu a850 8.1mp for a lot less than this , both take excellent pictures. 13mp means sod all especially with 10mb internal memory ????.

So why is 13mp not better then 6 megapixels

Cos there's an optimal pixel density. More megapixels means more detail, but it also means more noise. However, you get to the point where more pixels can't be adequately captured by the lens, and also way beyond anything you can print/see anyway. Thus, there's no more detail to be gained by adding pixels, all you're doing is adding noise.

For a 1/2.5" sensor like most compacts, that point is about 6megapixels. A little beyond that can be disguised by more processing and noise reduction, but only so far. Certainly not 13mp, that's ridiculous.

Or to put it another way: DSLRs, which are optimised for picture quality rather than marketing, top out at 10-11 megapixels (and that's with way better lenses and sensors 15x bigger than compact cameras).
#26
not a view on this camera in particular but just be aware it's the PMA trade show at the end of the month - so you tend get lots of new camera models annouced over the next few weeks......hence may be reductions on existing ones etc.... just to keep you informed....

So why is 13mp not better then 6 megapixels

Because they still use the same size sensors to collect the light, and cramming more and more megapixels into the same area just means that it's progressively harder for the camera to cleanly pick out the detail, meaning quality can actually be worse - not better. More megapixels also means more processing work to be done, meaning a slower camera.

The quality of the CCD sensor (and underlying processing software) and the lens are the basic things that are important.
The MP count is completely irrelevant.

I still have an old Fuji 1400Z lying around, it takes brilliant pictures even though it's only 1.3MP

makes sense - I replaced my old 4mp Kodak camera (w/Carl Zeiss lens) for a 10.1mp Samsung, that I paid £90 for. The Samsung macro feature (taking pictures up close/blurring the background) was impressive. BUT, I still think scenery shots from the old Kodak came out clearer and had better warmth.

I think 13mp on a camera like this is as dumb as having a 2000+ digital zoom on a camcorder.

it's pretty useless and will not make your pictures any better - just bigger (I should think they'd be at least 6-8mb each in a high quality setting)

The lens and component quality is on the cheap

Nice looking camera and seems like a good deal, but I wouldn't have another Samsung in a 'lucky' bag. My last one took great pics, but unfortunately mostly of the back of peoples heads because it took so long to take a pic.

So let me get this straight, you think the higher number of mega pixels, the better the quality?

Look it up and educate yourself about it, then enlighten everyone around you.

Exactly

I recommend finding a Casio Exilim EX- Z1080, much better than this. I got 1 from dixons for about 98.00 in April time last year, they seem to have gone up to 120.00 now but they are still much better for your money than this.

Indeed, it seems so. I really should have merged those posts together

High megapixel rating is not necessarily a bad thing if the cameras processor can keep the added noise down, 13mp would be handy if you wanted to crop your images and still get decent prints. This cam also has true 28mm wide angle which is unusual at this price.
Still wouldn't buy it though as I think Canon produce the best pictures in compacts Ive used..

Problem is the only way to keep noise down is to denoise, which then wipes out all the extra detail you've got. At 13mpixel noise is wildly out of control on a 1/2.5" sensor, it's not even close to sensible.
