Regarded as one of the greatest of all Polish films from its premiere in October 1958, Andrzej Wajda s third feature Ashes and Diamonds retains that stature over half a century later.

The entire film takes place on 8 May 1945, when the war in Europe ended with Germany s formal surrender but while other countries celebrated, Poland s postwar power struggle was only just beginning. In depicting the various factions jockeying for position, including ambitious Communists, aristocratic patriots, cynical journalists and anti-Nazi rebels recently emerged from the Warsaw sewers, Wajda brilliantly anatomises a riven country desperately trying to find its identity at a time when a fifth of its population had recently been killed and many more driven into exile. Maciek Chelmicki (Zbigniew Cybulski) embodies this conflict: outwardly a calculating assassin, his ultra-cool façade begins to crack when he badly botches a mission, falls in love with the barmaid Krystyna (Ewa Krzyzewska) and dares to dream of a life outside the armed resistance that s characterised his entire adult life. His all too human indecision makes him Polish culture s Hamlet, and Cybulski s performance remains iconic to this day.

It's great to see a classic voted hot here. Just to make a note though, this is supposed to be the final film of the war trilogy. The two films by Wajda that precede it are A Generation (Pokolenie) - 1955, and Kanal - 1957, the latter which was just as good as the final Ashes and Diamonds (Popiol i diament) - 1958, in my opinion.

It should be made clear it is a trilogy of themes, feeling etc. It isn't a character trilogy where you need to see all three to understand what is going on.

Ashes and Diamonds could be the only Wajda film you ever see and you would get the full effect from it but there are so many other great Wajda films it'd be madness to restrict yourself to this alone.

Cheers OP, bargain!

Never heard of it but according to IMDb it's a favourite of Scorcese and Coppola so at this price I'll take a punt!

I agree with you, that's why I said 'supposed to be'. I've seen them all, so I know you have a point, however, I wanted to make aware other people that might be interested in seeing the other films too. Especially if they like Ashes and Diamonds.

Just a heads up... the disc is apparently "Region A", which means that it might not play in UK Blu-Ray players.

Mine turned up yesterday. Disc and case are labelled Region A, B, C. I'm not sure there is a Region A only release from Arrow.

Edit: Watched it on Region B only player last night without any problems.

Glad to hear it. I was just going by the warning on the Amazon product page. Mine arrived yesterday and looking forward to watching it soon!
