Astraweb Announces Retention Upgrade to 270 Days

Astraweb is pleased to announce that we have just completed an infrastructure upgrade to increase our retention and improve our network.

Our retention is currently growing towards 270 days from 160 days. The latest retention statistics as our retention grows is available at:

http://www.news.astraweb.com/tools/stats.html

Our retention growth is for ALL groups. Our retention growth also includes headers, unlike many other services that do not include headers as part of their retention growth.

Along with our retention upgrade, Astraweb is also committed to provide the best network connectivity. As such, we have signed a new agreement with Level 3. The majority of our traffic will now be sent via Level 3, one of the best Tier 1 providers in the world!

Astraweb is committed to providing the best value service!

PS all prices include 20 connections and SSL

Very impressed!

seems a good deal-many people seem to be happy with astraweb-maybe give them a try.

Astraweb is awesome!

Cannot be beaten at this price with the SSL and 270days retention!

I don;t understand why in this day and age why anyone would stick with Torrents. Its so unsafe and slow.

Usenet for me everyday of the week!

Just cancelled my giganews account. This is a great deal and works like a charm
#6
Been on this a while and it does max out a 20Mb Cable connection most of the time, except of course when Virgin are traffic shaping.

The upgrade to the retention is good because have been some things that I have wanted that required a greater retention in the past. Its not at 270 days at the moment as they only announced the incresed retention recently. I have stopped using the SSL because it used to take a few minutes to connect and I am very impatient, might turn it back on and try it again soon.

I have used Giganews and no doubt it is the best but it is over double the price. At this price Astraweb is a steal, pit about the poor exchange rate!

Could someone please explain what the retention is and what it does. Thanks
#8
Deal has been on for awhile now but is still great value. I left Easynews after 6 years to join them and its been a good transition so far.

Having used Usenext for a few years with it's excellent software, I'm loathed to move, though I know other services can be cheaper. Is there a decent 3rd party newsreader that allows searches for ahem, stuff, and joins the posts painlessly? I used to use Secret Agent many moons ago but can't imagine doing without the Usenext software now.

basically means anything posted to a group in that amount of days is usually avaliable to download

Janeyjugs, i use grabit (http://www.shemes.com/) which for a small fee allows you to search upto 90-days, but theres many nzb sites out there, alot of them free, which alllow you to search upto 240 days. I use www.nzbsrus.com and www.nzbmatrix.com

I use sabnzbd (http://www.sabnzbd.org/) and newzbin.

How come this offer is only available through the OP's link and doesn't show up 'normaly' on their site?

I currently have an unlimited monthly plan with Newshosting ($15), and buy pay-by-download 120Gb chunks from Astraweb to use as fills as and when I need to. Sorely tempted by this offer.

Currently use powerusenet - have done for the past two to three years, and their service is fantastic.
Pay something like $15 pm for unlimited downloads, and it maxes out my 10mbit NTL connection.
They've just increased retention from 120 days to 200 days or something similar.

I have used astraweb previously [for 1 year] and they were OK, but they had regular downtime and incomplete posts hence my move to powerusenet.

Don't think powerusenet do the deal anymore that I am currenty on, hence don't want to cancel, but will give astraweb a month's use to see how this fair.

Thanks

What sort of content do you guys get from this?
#15
That would be telling....

But anything you can think of (digital) will be here. Like torrents but 1 million times better.

I have used giganews Diamond for over 2yrs and have been more than happy but this is so much cheaper.

Only started with Astraweb last night and had not problem with completion rates, 2x 7GB files i download.

Cheers

Bargain! Happy with 130 then160 and now 270 - woo hoo!!! Bargain! And SSL recently as well, cannae wack it!
#23
Great news!
I use astraweb's PAYG service and only the other day topped up my credit to 110GB, nice to know that they're still striving to improve the service, even though it's already very decent!
#24
I have been with astranews for a few months now on this $11 price there are brilliant
#25
hi guys ,, i use these all the time and they are fab.

fast speeds before when i was on NT HELL i was maxed at 20MB
with 20 connections

and also now on sky, my max is 10mb download but i allways get 12mb download

cant fault the service
and so easy to cancel too

just email the customer serv dept and when they recieve your email they terminate

couldnt be easier

100% reccomend better than giga news and the others.

its news to me that they have upped there retention

last time i checked it was about 150 days so 270 is FAB
#26
It's worth considering the $25 for 100GB option as well. Put it this way, say you download 20GB per month, with the montly option 100GB would cost you $55 compared to $25 for the pay up front for 100GB option. I opted for the $25 for 100GB one 3 months ago and I've still got about 50GB left.
#27
So do Astra index things, i.e. make them searchable or do you rely on another site such as http://nzbmatrix.com/ to search for them and then use your connection to giganews/astra to download them?

And you use a third party program to connect?

Why would you stick with Usenet this day and age when there is Rapidshare
#29
I dont understand why anyone would pay for this stuff when you can get it all free from Torrents?!

If you're a member of the good Torrent sites they have all this stuff and more... (without naming any names) & you can max out your connection on most of the stuff from the last few months. Admittidly the old stuff may take longer but... again, it's free! ;-)

Do this crowd have a web based interface such as Easynews's global search engine? I gave up using Newsrover a long time ago and use the web interface coupled with a download manager. Get really good connection speeds and I have see a thumbnail before I download it to check for quality etc.

You just have to try it and then you'll never go back to torrents. Plus ISPs are a lot wiser to torrent downloading than usenet , not sure if torrent downloads can be SSL encrypted but newsgroup downloads are. $25 for 100GB is peanuts really , for the convenience and speed and pretty much guaranteed availability isn't worth it for me..

torrents are full of rubbish and your not guarnateed to get what you want

you have to wait for people to have what you want
and some stuff i have had or wanted has taken months to download and then just cease at 60%

where as with the binaries
100% speed
100% wat you want
100% guaranteed

what more can you want
#34
Torrents are not 100% safe for VirginMedia Customers.

Torrents seems to have more viruses/spyware than usenet from my experience. When i used torrents no torrent had PAR or PAR2 files so if you downloaded something and it was corrupt then you have just wasted X hrs

Also this is more secure with SSL.

I am with an ISP who slows down torrent traffic, I never get a decent download speed. Will be interesting to see what type of downloading they will be targeting when they start sending out the famous letters to offenders, Usenet is client/server whilst Torrents are P2P. They may well start by targeting the P2P "file sharers" as these get most of the bad press.
#36
How much more **** can you download? I mean I can only watch 1 movie every 3 days or sth... 150GB of download is just waaay beyond me. Maybe I'm just too old for this stuff?
#37
Cancelled platinum Giganews, signed up for this. A quick check shows some differences in groups, also number of threads in groups is different (which is only really to be expected of usenet). Being with Virgin I also use their groups.

Good deal, thanks.

I have used Astraweb for a few years now and in all that time have had very little downtime or corrupted/missing files.Very pleased with the service and the longer retention times are a bonus.
#39
It's Blu-ray that you need the huge limits for, 10 Blu-ray rips and you're already looking a 100-150GB.

I did use AW for a while about 2 years ago but found them cr*p at the end of the day, but given recent news I might be tempted away from GN after all i'm paying $25 and don't use SSL or there max retention that often, so i've bunged them an email asking why i should stay with them, lets see what they say if there is no reason to stay them i'm off and give AW another go
