I paid £150 back in may.

Also on offer in Curry's/PCworld same price

Product Description
The ASUS DSL-AC68U is the world's fastest ADSL/VDSL modem Wi-Fi router, with combined dual-band data rates of up to 1900 Mbps. On the 5GHz band, 802.11ac gives 1300 Mbps wireless data rates, while Broadcom TurboQAM technology super-charges 2.4 GHz 802.11n performance from 450 Mbps to 600 Mbps with compatible devices. Compatible with ADSL2/2+, ADSL, VDSL2, fiber and cable services, the top specification completes future-proofing.

Three external antennas boost coverage to the next level, so you can enjoy lag-free gaming and streaming almost anywhere around the house. ASUS AiRadar with universal beamforming technology enhances the Wi-Fi stability and improves coverage up to 150%*. Most importantly, the universal beamforming not only works on 802.11ac clients, but also 802.11a/b/g/n clients.

Powered by dual dedicated CPUs for wired and wireless connections, the DSL-AC68U eliminates the performance drops that plague other routers with busy networks and maximizes both range and stability. So even on the busiest home networks, HD video streaming is always smooth, the latency low for online gaming and VoIP calls, and file downloads are never interrupted.

The easy-to-use ASUSWRT graphical user interface unlocks the power of the DSL-AC68U giving robust control to optimize your network for you. 30-second set-up and easy traffic management means even network newbies can enjoy its sophisticated features, while power users will love its IPv6 support, multiple wireless SSIDs and secure VPN access.

Hmm, I'm on the look for a good router. But this is too expensive. If it hits £90, I'll grab it.

Is the merlin software good on this?

Is the merlin software good on this?

AFAIK it's not supported, though possibly you can install it but give up the modem features. Which would be no great loss because the modems in these are absolute rubbish, to put it politely. See here

If you want a Merlin router maybe you would be better off with the non-modem version - rt-68u is it?

Was going to purchase the DSL-AC68U a few weeks back from a local seller for use with DD-WRT. After a few hours of research I was sure that it wasn't going to be straight forward.

Managed to pick up a mint rt-n66u for a very reasonable sum which I'll be testing the DD-WRT or merlin software on. Do you know which is best?(merlin vs dd-wrt)

You were right, the non-modem equivalent is the rt-68u.

@#4 - interesting comments as I bought one at the back end of last year and have used it with both Sky and BT with no drop-outs or problems, even when playing catch up after my holiday. With the later versions of the firmware, it is a doddle to set things up and you only need to change the modem set-up if you do as I have done and change ISP. Use the wizard, pick from 2 drop down menus and you are done.

Maybe, I have the only one that works. :3

Incidentally, changing from Sky to BT upped SpeedTest from 36megs to 50megs.

There are a few Used-Like New ones available too - you get an extra 20% with those so total price is £84.47.
Took the plunge on that option!

I got one of these, has been working absolutely brilliantly so far for the last week. replaced a bt homehub 5 that my devices were losing connection to far too often and I couldn't use a steam link with.
also put a new Asus wireless card in my PC and now using Steam link purely over wireless is flawless. I'm really impressed!
