I just bought one of these last night from pc world and the next cheapest I could find on the net was £300+.

They are not on display in every store and the store I went in didn't even know they had them in stock (I was told buy a chap who worked in currys they had stock).

The website dosen't bring them up if you navigate through to the netbooks, it only brings it up when searching for 1005.

This is the model with the N270 (M - 8.5hr) not N280 (H 10.5hr) and this comes with 6 cell battery with upto 8.5hours life, also has matt screen! The H has glossy screen but they go for £380ish.

This is my first so be nice ;-)

Specs:

Processor Type - Intel Atom N270
Processor speed - 1.6GHz
Memory Size - 1 GB
Hard Drive Capacity - 160 GB
Screen Size/Type - 10" WSVGA
Wireless Enabled - YES
No. of USB Connections - 3
Battery Type - 6 cell
Battery life (up to) - 8.5 hours
Weight - 1.4 kg
Height - 26.5 mm
Width - 262 mm
Depth - 178 mm
Colour - Black

Really good machine for the money, I find it's just as good as my partners NC10.

scorching hot, did they have the 1008ha too?
#2
The ones on the net are the N280 Atom Chip - this one is the older N270 Atom. Had a look earlier and couldn't work out the prices until I seen the spec!

More likely pcworld messed the spec up on the website no?

maybe Trakker1 can confirm which processor his has from pcworld
#4
which is better this or the nc10?
#5
According to the Asus website, there are 1005 models with N270, and some with N280 (idem with / without bluetooth, and 3 battery capacity - 23/48/63 W)

Cf http://event.asus.com/eeepc/comparison/eeepc_comparison.htm

It sems this one is a N270, 48W battery. The only question left is about bluetooth.
#6
thanks the battery life looks really good

I'm wondering whether this will be better than the nc10 and if the nc10 will drop in price very soon too

btw 48 w battery is that better than the other ones?

jeez talk about clouding your model range. Surely the logistics of making so many variants of the same model must cost them a packet:thinking:

NC10 is £10 cheaper than this already at pc world, I would get the asus
#9
why would you go for the asus then?

Personally I think its a better brand, plus better looking new modern model. The NC10 is past its sell by date IMO. Spec wise nothing in it really.

There is three models:

Theres one with a 3 cell battery which I have not seen.

Then there's the middle one what I bought with 6cell battery 8.5hrs

then theres the better one with 6cell battery rated at 10.5hrs.

The one I bought is the specs above but like I said this is still £315ish in the uk at the moment and the top end 10.5hr one is around £380ish.

This one has no bluetooth, but does have matt screen over the glossy.
#12
also these have n draft wireless over g in the nc10.

the extra you pay for in the top end model is the N280 processor, bluetooth, 2 hours extra battery life and a glossy screen.

Is it worth £100 extra?

The glossy screen is a big problem to me and you can overclock this CPU's if you wanted to but at the end of the day its a netbook.
#13
hold on what do you mean by the glossy screen is a big problem?

I'm contemplating getting this but how do I get the £10 off!?

#15
Okay looks like size/weight/bluetooth/inbuilt camera

are the main differences
it is very close
#16
heres why I choose the 1005HA M over the NC10.

1) N wireless over g in the NC10

2) Nice new seashell design

3) Bigger track pad (seemed to be the main problem with the NC10)

4) I dont need bluetooth and if I did they are small enough to pop in a usb.

5) Maybe a wee bit longer battery.

6) Wanted something different from the better half.

Like I said they both have matte screens which is good in my eyes.

I think because these have just been released this month it might hold its value more when I come to upgrade.
#17
oh thanks for that

do we happen to know how many slots for memory on the motherboard?

must be 2?

also do we know if that is 2 X 512mb and not 1 X 1GB?

thanks those are good reasons I will probably get this now just for something to surf the net with
or take away easily etc
#18
Asus my motheroboard is an asus! never known them to be making notebooks!!! anyway my next question is
if it doesn't have a CD drive what is the cheapest way to install your own operating systems such as Linux? (excluding flash disks)
#19
Still a lot of money considering it's not a proper laptop. I bought an eeePC 900 for £110 last week!

If you want to install Linux the easiest, cheapest way is to buy a 1GB USB thumb drive and use that. If you have a windows machine there are several apps you can download that will put a Linux install disk on a USB thumbdrive for you with a couple of clicks.

mAh is what its all about, Watts don't make a battery run longer or shorter really, just thats how much power (max) the machine will use, so if a laptop is 120w it means the components use more power than a 80w machine but it doesn't mean either of them are better, stick to mAh for battery specs when choosing something for the exact same model but if you want to know the battery span on different machines you'll have to look at reviews or what the manufacturers say.

i mean u could say you are going to get a netbook with a 60w power supply and not one with a 80w because u think it will use more power, but then the manufacturer might double the cells, or increas the mAh capacity per cell.
#22
I like the Toshiba too but its a little more at £312, but it does come with an International warranty rather than the usual UK or European one.

The nc10 does have vga out. dont think theres much difference between these 2- personally though i'd be going for the dell mini10 at £219 posted the other day, only downside to it is the 3 cell battery but its alot cheaper
#24
thank why would u go for the dell just because of the price?
#25
thanks all

1gb drive it is

so how sure are we that this doesn't have VGA out?

also thanks about mAh

3 cell vs 6 cell
would that mean the dell has half the battery life of the Asus?
#26
i had a 9cell vostro 1500 and that kept going for ages and ages and ages! yeah a 3 cell wouldn't give you a very good battery life, 6 cell seems to be the way to go for netbooks
#27
Does the NC10 have a multi touch touchpad? My EEEPC 901 has one and I couldn'y live without one now.
#28
This looks to be the same model, although I've heard a few people have experienced issues with these guys, my previous experiences have been pleasant

£272.48 delivered
#29
just to let you know guys, this aint the cheapest you can get.. and for a start its the bog standard netbook now. 160gb harddrive with linux lipus lite or xp, with the N270 or N280 atom, which are no different to each other for what you will see...

The newer netbooks due out are ones with nvidia graphics chipsets which allow users to display HD videos on youtube for example and other handy speed boosts.

The newer atom model out is also clocked at 1.8ghz instead.

Its an average price... so for that reason no hot no cold.
#30
Don't these have a "dongle" type attatchment for VGA out?

I never said this was the latest Ion, however this is the latest EEE PC out.

Also this is a good price for a netbook thats just been released, dont forget the smasung NC10, Dell 10v and the likes have been out for sometime and have dropped in price.

Anyhow just thought if anyone was looking for this machine its a good price at a big retailer that you can go view before you buy. :whistling:

Carphonewarehouse are doing the 1008HA for £329.99 also which isn't bad...

No you are thinking of the 1008HA, this has a full VGA like all other netbooks.
#33
Thanks for that, seriously tempted just wonder how to "sell" the idea to the wife......do I really need three netbooks?

That's a stunning deal!

psd99 - You're link refers to the lower spec N270 version. Check out this Netbook Choice article for the difference between both SKUs.

EDIT: Looks like the price of the higher-spec versions have dropped to this level from quite a few retailers.
#38
oh okay n270 vs n280

is there much of a difference though in terms of ghz?

The other difference between the two appears to be bluetooth and vga out. what about the screen?

With the £10 off somehow on pcworld you can get this laptop on the first deal down to £269
and then you got to ask yourself if the £40 between the two is worth it just for those two things if that what is the main differences.
