Fantastic price on these. I think, with the advent of the 901 and the soon-to-be-released 901 + Atom CPU, these price-drops are the tip of the ice-berg.

Many other places are actually charging more for these esoteric colours, so it's great that they're cheaper here. Voted definitely hot!

I bought one for my g/f's Christmas and it's just fantastic. Coupled with some 3 mobile broadband, it's a take-anywhere surfing Mecca!

Good find, great price although never heard of the retailer before

Up for me also....speaking as grade A refurbished person (see face).

Hot deal, the 9" is too expensive for what it is i'm afraid although I would welcome the extra screen space....have some heat!

(remember you can 'mod' these while running windows to run at a higher resolution - details via google as I don't have one myself :)

Such a good price. I'm in two minds Ireland or a Eee PC.

It will have to be the Eee then ... I don't think you can buy Ireland for £190.19 these days :)

I'm not sure the two are entirely comparable to be honest mate - I don't think Ireland's that portable...

can we not turn every one of these into a review of the eee (especially when most of the negatives are from people who have never used one).

lets compare against other prices for the same (or very equivalent) product. thanks!

i am tempted to buy another for another member of the family.. they are fighting over the one black one, its that popular :p and blue/white would be nice, i don't think i can justify having one each though even below £200 is a lot of money when you've got many other things to buy..
#15
I use my 4G black every day, it's brilliant.

So voted this one hot, as it's by far the best price I've seen..
#16
after doing some reading - i think that elonex is just too slow. with the increasing complexity of webpages, i wouldn't go any slower than the eee.. i would say the eee is worth twice that. i'm yet to see anything better value wise overall than the original eee, although i'm sure in a year or 2 someone will have beaten it :)

edit: plus there seems to be some disagreement of what the real price of the elonex one will be - some are saying £120-£140 inc vat.

so if this is a webcam model great, but i suspect its the surf, which is why i havent voted hot yet. i think the cam is probably worth another £20 for most people?
#17
Hands up who has bought the 3 year extended cover for £189.06!!!!!!!!! How on earth do they think they could get away with that!

Great find. Heat added.

Please excuse my ignorance people but what exactly are these and what are the differences between this and say a normal laptop. Please reply in 'idiot's guide' form if you please.

A primary difference is that this does not have an optical drive - CD or DVD drive - although one can be connected via USB.

Further, as it comes from the shops, it has a cut down version of Linux installed which is fine for general use. Windows can be added with minimum fuss.

It'a about a quarter of the size of a laptop (about the size of a hardback book), it weighs under a kilo, so is 1/3 to 1/4 of the weight of a laptop. It's small enough to fit in a handbag or backpack and is very sturdy, so is truly portable. Altho there's no dvd/cd drive it has multiple ports for SD cards and USB devices. The Linux install is perfectly fine for surfing whilst out IMHO and it's wireless. It comes with some games and open office software.
#26
Does anyone know of any shop where I can physically see one of these before I order this?

I have this in Light blue - bought it from PC World about two weeks ago (reduced from £249.99 to £219 and I got it knocked down to £209 by taking out a PC Performance agreement that I duly cancelled less than a week later!). They have them on the shop floor to play with!

AFAIK the coloured models all include the webcam, mine certainly does!

I can't recommend these more. It's highly portable (I can easily hold it in one hand whilst surfing the net on the other - nothing dodgy!!!), comes complete with the Open Office software which is compatible with [at least] Microsoft Word and Excel documents and I have successfully transferred documents between this and a number of work and personal computers (all running Windows).

I see no reason to install Windows yet as the Linux is incredibly easy to use (though I have enabled the full desktop option so that it is more Windows like - more to play with rather than because the 'Easy' desktop was preventing me accessing anything I needed.

It starts up in around 10-15 seconds (on easy desktop) and shutsdown in 5-10; and so far the battery life is proving to be very impressive - I've lost count of the number of times i've had a "3 minutes till shutdown" warning and still used it for up to half an hour (including shutting down and restarting a number of times).

If you want something for surfing the net or using office applications (you can even do basic and, i'm told, slightly-advanced photo editing, and my fiance [who's a professional photographer] was very impressed with the quality of the screen for giving her a preview of the photo's she had taken)

Anyway enough ranting. Right now I am replying to this post from my old laptop, but only because I haven't quite got the email client on the Asus working as well as Outlook on my laptop (I have a number of different email accounts that Outlook handles for me, both business and personal, and I haven't had time to properly play with the Thunderbird program yet).

PC World had some in last week.

One of my friends has bought one and is running Windows very successfully :)

I'm trying to resist :)

Do these laptops have external vga output so they can be connected to a plasma tv? I could then buy a wireless keybord and mouse and surf the net via my wireless network from my arm chair?
#30
I have a 4G black one which I bring to work with me. Since I walk in a distance to and from work every day, carrying my Macbook in was becoming downright cumbersome so I bought one of these for carrying around (and for when I am travelling). It's brilliant!! It won't compete with my macbook by any stretch (which is used at home while the EEE is always off) but for out and about there's no competition: the EEE is a winner.

For those who will say it's too small or that the upgraded model is 'only' £120 (ie. 50%+ more!) need not comment really as they just don't get it.

Toys R Us (bizarely) usually have one or more on display. Though in my local one it's been a bit roughed up, and some of the keys are missing! Pesky kids..

Your local could well be my local then - Old Kent Road :)

There is a white one on display which has been beaten with baseball bats by the look of it!

I reality though it is much tougher and I can only copy what's been said above about it being great for being out and about.

Yes, it has vga output but I don't know that it can be connected to a plasma.

Hard to say with complete assurance from the site's information. There are two models of 4GB Eee; the "Surf" model does not have the camera (and has a smaller battery pack) but is otherwise identical. I can't see anything in the tiny description printed that would allow this one to be pinned down to one or the other.

However, searching for the "manufacturer's #" (which is nothing like any Asus model number I've ever seen) brings up a bunch of other DSG sites, and on the Dixons one it does list "Built in webcam" (http://www.dixons.co.uk/martprd/product/seo/Computing/Handheld+PCs/Internet+Tablets/ASUS/Eee+PC+4GB+Blue/457074#productInformationSection) - so assuming that DSG is internally consistent it seems likely that Microwarehouse are listing the non-Surf model.

I would contact them to check just in case though!

Great Find, Glad i held out saved me a few quid. Ordered.

Should be able to connect to plasma if Plasma has VGA input.

Now its time to MOD it when it arrives w00t

Yes, they have a standard VGA port. I've used mine connected to a 40" LCD to slideshow photos.

The wireless mouse/keyboard might be more of an issue; while the standard Xandros install does have kernel support for Bluetooth keyboards and mice it's not terribly straightforward to configure. As usual http://www.eeeuser.com/ is the place to look.

Also, why not just use the Eee to surf the net from your armchair? Firstly, web browsing on a TV is always a fairly unsatisfying process unless you are using a browser and interface designed specifically for the task, and secondly a keyboard and mouse are going to be quite hard to use unless you have a table. A better option would be a keyboard with a built in trackball or trackpad, but they're still bulkier than the Eee itself.

What would be the point. Surely the point of these is that they are highly portable. Why not just buy a pc if ya gonna hook it up to ya tv and use it with a wireless keyboard.

its working through a proxy now though :S
