There's 8 in stock at eBuyer at the moment for £229.99. While that's not a great price to be posting, it's in short supply else where so I'm posting for anyone who really wants it now....personally I'll be waiting until I can find it for at least £10 less. Stock seems to be going up and down constantly so not sure how accurate it is (one time there were 8 in stock, then 48, then 8).

From what I have been reading this is the last shipment to the U.K. till the middle of January next year. Most places have stopped taking orders due to "unprecedented demand" but yet another case of companies overcharging due to short supply, though not as extortionate as the Wii deals that appear every 5 minutes.

Had mine for a month now and it's been nothing but excellent. Everyone who has seen it has ordered one.

If you want one of these in time for Christmas and don't want to risk waiting for stock at online retailers, go to your nearest ToysRus. My local branch had >10 in stock before the weekend and others report similar elsewhere. Good luck!
#3
I hope other suppliers have got stock too.. I've got a black one on order from BT shop....

I agree.... It's sad that suppliers are charging extra for this... it should be 219.. but I guess it's a case of supply and demand.

It will invalidate your 2 year warranty.

Eeeuser.com have posted a link to a statement by Asus regarding this. Apparently removing or breaking the sticker that covers the ram port will not invalidate your warranty. HTH

ASUS Computer International (“ASUS”) recently received feedback from one of its valued customers with questions concerning the purpose of a seal stating, “Warranty Void If Removed” over the access door to the single SODIMM slot on some models of the ASUS Eee PC. ASUS wishes to assure its customers that merely breaking or removing this kind of seal will not void the ASUS Limited Warranty. Although ASUS recommends that customers use ASUS-approved service facilities and components, ASUS is committed to honoring the terms of its Limited Warranty and making sure that its customers are free to make appropriate hardware and software modifications and upgrades, regardless of whether the service is performed by an approved facility, a non-approved service provider, or by the customers themselves. ASUS will replace the warranty label with a label to warn users that ASUS will not be responsible for the damage caused by improper hardware change.

ASUS is taking steps to make sure that the seals in question are no longer used in its products that are intended to be sold in any country where these stickers are not permitted.

ASUS has also modified its written Limited Warranty policies effective immediately to eliminate any provision stating that the ASUS Limited Warranty will be voided simply because the product is serviced by a non-ASUS-approved service facility, or if non-ASUS-approved components or software are installed or used. Current Eee PC customers are advised that ASUS will honor all other terms of its Limited Warranty and that it will not refuse warranty service simply because a customer has either broken a warranty seal, installed non-ASUS components or software, or because the customer’s unit has been opened or serviced by a non-ASUS-approved service facility or by the user.

ASUS customers are reminded that ASUS computer systems, like all other computer systems, contain delicate and complex components that may be easily damaged if not handled correctly. Also, ASUS systems are tested and certified for compatibility and performance to product specifications based on their original configurations using ASUS-approved hardware, components, and approved, factory-installed software.

As with all computer systems, some added hardware, components and software may not be compatible with the product. Also, as with all computers, attempts by persons who lack sufficient knowledge or who are not properly trained to upgrade, repair, or maintain the product’s internal components or hardware configuration, or the installation and use of non-approved or untested hardware components or accessories, may result in damage to the product or severe degradation of the product’s performance and functionality that may not be covered under the ASUS Limited Warranty. Also, as with all computer software, attempts to change, alter, or modify the factory-installed software may result in damage to the product or a severe degradation in the product’s performance or functionality that may not be covered under the ASUS Limited Warranty.

I have a black one on pre-order for £198.99. I've just checked stock again. It was the 17th but its now changed to 3-4 weeks (In Constraint)...

This may also affect orders made from the BT Shop as they use Dabs (same website but in white) and because BT own them anyway

Good news about the warranty - you can upgarde the memory (as mentioned above). Asus say that the invalid warranty sticker shoudn't have been put on there and is to apparently be excluded on all new batches of the EEE...
#26
Dave, from what I've been reading this only so far applies to the USA. Its not been confirmed by Asus UK yet.

Hmmm well I'd assume it would be ok for us too (eventually) - hopefully by the time I get one, it can be officially done :-D oh hang this is the UK after all so I suppose I could be wrong and we aren't allowed to upgrade it  I'm not planning to myself but I'm sure this would please many other users

I've tried twice to contact Asus UK to confirm or deny no luck yet.

Had a play with one on display in toys r us in Derby @ £219
They are so dinky
Didnt ask if they had any in stock though

There were plenty for sale in Toysrus in Ilford on Sat. Picked up one myself - cute and nippy little machine. Well thought out set of functions and software implementation. Very difficult to fault for the price.

Wondering about upgrading the RAM - but what would be the benefit? It does work very well already (are people noticing massive improvements with upgrades?)

Let me clarify a few things regarding the Asus eee pc. It's very very fast at booting up XP typically in 15 seconds even with 512MB ram. Installation is slower than normal hard drive as that is typical of the flash memory used. Fast read times, instant access but slow write times. I have totally stripped down one of these great little machines and it's currently functioning but in bits. There is no drive there are just four 1GB memory chips soldered on the mobo.

It's very easy to install XP, the manual even has a guide. The linux installation is good and easy to use. Even if you delete the recovery partition from the storage memory, you can still make a recovery from the DVD that comes with the unit. The webcam is good, I did a little testing with amcap and the picture quality was good. The screen resolution is low if I remember correctly its 800 x 480 or u can go up to 800 x 600 but you have to scroll around the screen slightly. VGA output will display 1280 x 1024, and you can have the LCD on or off depending on the mode of output.

This is a very nice little machine, takes a while to get up to speed on the keyboard. The wireless connection and quality is good. I don't particularly like archeros w/less chipset but in this case it does work well. I had a problem with the LAN connection not detecting the cable, but it was down to the cable in the end.

If you want an ultra small laptop with decent functionality there's nothing like this on the market, it's dare I say it revolutionary.
#34
xp run ok? they're releasing an XP version but it was going to be stripped down so just wondered if you'd edited your install or is it "full fat XP", shall we say.
