I was in the Coventry Toys R Us store yesterday, and was surprised to see the 9" screen Asus EEE PC was in stock - I didn't think these were being released until next week (12th May?) Looks like these may be available for on-line order now, too.

Was priced at £329, which is think is the normal RRP. I'm told other retailers (the Dixons chain, for example) could be loading up the price... Don't know if this is true, however.

However they only had the 12GB Windows XP versions, in white. It seems the 20GB Linux version isn't available just yet.

The guy did say that supplies were limited, with each store is only getting 3 machines at a time.

So if you're desperate for one now, Toys R Us could be the place to try.

I, however, think I'll wait for the bigger Linux version in black. Anyone got a good voucher for Play? :-)

So they do. But you wouldn't be able to pick one up from a store tomorrow... And still none in black. :-(

Curiously, they don't have the 1 per customer restriction on the Windows version.

I guess they may have some in the shops, but the PC World web site still lists these as pre-order, and I can't see it listed on the Dixon's site at all.

so you'd prefer to have 8gb less just so you could go down to dixons and pick it up today rather than wait till tuesday delivery???

In my first post, I did suggest I'd wait...

However, it *is* a tough call. I'd need this to be able to run some apps that are Window only, so I'd really want both XP and Linux on it. I could stick an 8GB SD card in this for a tenner or so, to bring this up to 20GB of storage. An XP license would cost a fair bit more than that...

I think you need to change that title. '12mb' is a little confusing!

nice laptop but going passed £200 - £250 mark for these sub laptops are defeating the purpose.

The 4GB ones are still availible, and a £100 cheaper. This version does have a bigger and higher resolution screen as well as the extra storage though.

Does anyone know if the eee's distro has wine?

On the previous one - and presumably on this too, it was Xandros, which seemed suprising as it was not a free version of Linux. Its based on Debian, as are the open source Ubuntu variants. I have Wine on Ubuntu (for Utorrent - which i no longer use). So I would suspect Wine would run on Xubuntu (effectively a streamlined version of Ubuntu, that is happy to run on old kit).

I seem to recall that Xandros borrowed heavily from Lindows/Linspire, which in turn did the same from Wine, so that my answer your question.
