I had nothing but problems with ordering one of these from play. They refused to send it as my address on their account was
"13 lower flat blah street"
where the address on my debit card was
"13 blah street"

They then said i had to fax them a tennant agreement and wait 14days for authorisation....

I went to ebuyer and had one by 11am the next day.

Now, if you had poated the one from ebuyer that is £299, id vote it hot. But play are ****.

Might be worth contacting them first to find out which battery it ships with.

The initial batches were selling with lower capacity batteries than the 701. Strange considering the bigger screen. This means you would get under 2 hours use out of it.
Asus are looking at a swap program, where you send your current battery and pay £10 + vat for the new one but that seems to be up in the air as Asus employees and Asus selling stores don't seem to have seen this official statement.

Also worth noting that the 901 ships at the begining of July with the Atom processor, bluetooth and batery life of 6+ hours.

Still, great price and I believe the cheapest around.

£280.80 + £10.99 shipping = £291.79 so sorry not cheaper

I'm glad I didn't grab this at £329 - 5% on launch from Play.com last month then

I'm still holding out for the other makers to bring their solutions to retail first though.

The EEE 901 is more than likely going to be priced around £300, based on speculation and pre-order prices to date.

The EEE 900 is steadily coming down in price, has been doing so for the past week or two so I'd hold out until the first week of July IMHO plus I'm sure this is a dup. :giggle:

In the next 2 or 3 months there are shed loads of EEE PC clones coming out from everyone including Dell. All of which seem to offer more bang for buck than the current EEE PCs. I'd say hold onto your money and see what comes out from other manufacturers.

Ive ordered quite a few things from play.com and have had many problems with them on the higher end products. A couple of months ago now I concluded that they are not reliable
#14
Really? If if is..thats really SMALL
#15
Norwich union staff also get 5% off play, though I always forget this when it comes to ordering from them

Every flippin time...

The Eeepc is a subnotebook. It is built for portability; it is small and light. It is not as powerful as a larger notebook for two reasons: price and heat. A larger notebook is able to dissipate more heat; this means more powerful components can be put in, and it can be cheaper as the miniturisation can be limited.

You can have powerful and cheap, but not small. You can have small and powerful, but not cheap. This is small and cheap (but not that powerful - but it's a netbook).

This all said, I'd wait for the Dell Mini Inspiron (Inspiron E and E-slim) which are coming out in July. The word is they'll have a bespoke Ubuntu-based OS which is significantly better than the Xandros running on the Eeepc by default. Plus is will have a decent screen and Intel Atom chip, plus the option of a 2.5" HDD instead of the standard SSD device (larger capacity but higher power).

er. play are a reputable online retailer. you surely can't **** them off for being careful before they ship a 300 quid item. online retailers often get taken for a ride by unscrupulous types using dodgy addresses and supposed flats. it might seem stupid to you at first glance, but the fact they are careful should show you they take security seriously, so your account details are in good hands. my view of what you experienced would make me feel positively about play, although for your order it slowed things down which would be annoying granted.

Yeah if play get caught out by thieves and don't get payment from the credit card companies for stock they have sent then the rest of us honest customers have to pay more. Its a sign of the times and while annoying is totally justified thanks to the lowlife scum that are about nowadays expecting something for nothing. We all like a bargain hence this forum but some people's idea of a bargain goes a little too far.

Good deal but I'd wait a bit.

Especially with the Acer Aspire One coming out soon and same goes for the MSI Wind.

All of them? I've only heard the price for the wind and the aspire one so far. The wind is worse value for money (bigger, heavier, smaller battery, more expensive) and the aspire one is an acer so there may be build quality/technical support issues.

Given dell's popularity they may bring out a good one, and a second generation HP 2133 with a via nano processor (Isiah sounded so much better) and a non-glossy screen shouldn't be discounted.
#25
The Dell looks the nicest from the screenshots published, but that was a proof of concept, which nobody saw switched on. I would be amazed if they managed to bring anything decent to the market at the right price in time for July.

there are lots of netbooks coming but the eee is still the smallest and rugged-est and also has a multi-touch pad.

Exactly.

All the clones are moving away from the features that made the Eee PC appeal to me.

Does anyone know the dimensions and the weight of this one?

I'm the big 40 this year (August) and my darling Dad is buying me the EEE 701 in white or pink for my birthday. My sister and her collegues are computer geeks and they've been telling me to wait as there are bucket loads of new ones coming out this summer. Help!!! Decisions decisions! :0)

They're right... but we don't know when they're going to be available here.. it's just speculation. If you take the decision to wait how long are you going to wait - there's always going to be something cheaper or better coming along.

The 901 has a higher resolution, a much longer life, bluetooth and it's much the same size as the 701 - £100 more expensive but it's definitely worth considering.
#32
Saw one of these next to the 701 at LHR T1 Dixons... would you believe it was more expensive than this.... obviously RRP less VAT. It looked really good. I've got the 701 and having the bigger screeen is better.. more storage too. I think I'll hold out for the Atom version (901) before upgrading.
#33
Good price but if your not in a rush wait for the 901 and in a few months the prices will probably drop with all the competition releasing their sub notebooks.

It might be similar size but it's still bigger, thicker, heavier and more expensive, thus further eroding the unique selling points that made the EeePC special (IMO).

I have the Asus EEE 701with XP installed - personally I wouldn't buy a 900 - wait for the 901. The biggest issue for a portable PC is the battery life and the 901 is so much better.

The 701 has been great for keping in the car and using with my 3G phone whilst away - I think if I was buying now, I would consider spending the extra on the 901 over the 701 as I want to use it more and more and the larger screen resolution would make it that much more usable. :)
