Best spec. £400 laptop that has been posted on here in a long time.
#10
The review was for a machine with a T6500 processor and this one only has a T4200. Not sure with the reduction in processor that this is such a great deal. The better processor was compared to the K50IN but I am sure that this is not in the same league.

Tier 1 sounds like a LA porn company, ASUS are just OK, this has Vista (approx £18 to upgrade) and it's no more than I'd expect for £400 for me to think it's well priced.

Use your credit card if you go for this. You might need the extra security.
#12
I've used Tier 1 on a couple of occasions and they are really good, they've been around a while now, you shouldn't have any qualms about using them.
#13
yeah think they are ok i phoned them yesterday very helpfull and confirmed what i ask about it being brand new told me yeah new and sealed looked at ratinging about them from ggole seems like a gd company had 4 1/2 stars from 160 reviwers

I've got an ASUS laptop. I bought mine off Laptops Direct. I was tempted to get this one, but I wanted to play the Sims 3 and it needs a specific HD graphics card - it's not enough to just buy a laptop with an integrated graphics card. So I got an ASUS X50SR, cost me nearly £600, but I think it's worth it for the BluRay and sims 3 working.

I looked up the graphics card on this laptop u mentioned, and this is what the advice on the Sims 3 forum is if u want it for gaming:

I was told by the tech manager of a games development company that the 120M is 'a generic card only available to manufacturers, and isn't all that good for gaming at medium/high detail, and the 1GB of RAM is a cheap way of making the card sound better than it is'
#15
i dont know regarding the graphics this has a seprate gforce gt120m 1gb seperate graphics according to bechmark iam no expert by the way

http://www.notebookcheck.net/Mobile-Graphics-Cards-Benchmark-List.844.0.html

the gt120m comes higher than the HD 3470 which is in the ASUS X50SRwhich cost £600

iam not comparing the processor and all that but it not just the card alone that makes performace its all the componatants that comes together guess

but iam no expert

I've just bought an Acer 5732Z laptop from Tesco;

Acer Aspire 5732Z Laptop (Intel Pentium® Dual Core T4300, 4GB, 500GB, 15.6" Screen, Windows 7 Home Premium)

Would this one be a better buy as I haven't opened the box yet? I'd be grateful of any advice:?
#17
Does it have intergrated graphics in it? Also there is a screen difference...

Reliability comparison of different laptop brands.
http://www.geckoandfly.com/2009/11/18/the-most-reliable-laptop-survey-best-netbook-reliability-comparison/

So Asus, are not just okay in terms of reliability, they are arguably the best.
My old Asus lasted 6 years of constant use and traveling with, and was fantastic.

But saying that they can feel a bit cheap and plasticky. Recently got my parents an Asus laptop and the touchpad and touchpad buttons were awful.

Does anyone know if this has HDMI output as i can seem to find a review anywhere?

Is the laptop you've bought this one?

If so, it very much depends what you intend to use your machine for.
Here are the key points:

The Asus has:

-Smaller harddrive
-marginally slower CPU
-Vista not Windows 7
+bigger screen
+higher resolution screen
+much faster graphics card (~5x faster)
+support for wireless-n
+better build quality
?HDMI output?

Personally i'd go for the Asus, but that's because I place the importance of graphics capability above OS & HDD. (The OS can be replaced, the HDD can be upgrade; but you are stuck with the graphics card for the life of the laptop)

Good deal - Ordered.

I didn't really need an upgrade right now but a 17" Asus at this price seems good to me. I was actually going to wait until next week (at which point the offers of 'free' upgrades to Windows 7 will expire) to see if there are some bigger price drops, but this was just too tempting, and they only appear to have a few left.

Downside on the config seems to be the lack of HDMI (could be a big deal for most people) and no Bluetooth (so need a £1 USB version) but for me, there was very little else wrong with this baby. I just bought my first BluRay player (£50 from HMV, as posted here) and I won't typically be playing movies directly off the original media when using this ;-) I saw HDMI listed on a different website, but true enough, the Tier1 website doesn't say that.

Unfortunately, like a lot of companies, they will only deliver to your PayPal or Credit Card registered address, so a day for delivery in my case. Never heard of the company either, but I went through PayPal AND used my credit card, so should have a degree of protection.

Looking forward to it getting here now. Thanks OP.

Just to confirm, there's no HDMI per the Asus website.... and no more stock by the look of it anyway!
Phew - just made it
#27
Thanks for you help, looks like it's out of stock now, I've deliberated for too long!

I would prefer Windows 7 but it seems you can upgrade easily and I don't really need 500gb of storage so it probably would have been a better buy, especiailly with the bigger screen.

Any other suggestions?

You could give us a definitive answer as to whether it has an HDMI output or not?

Hmm, tough one.

While it sounds like you have no immediate desire or requirement for running modestly demanding games, young kids get older, and older kids do nothing BUT play computer games

Maybe it'll be easier to outline exactly what you think you don't need.

* Bluray sounds like it'll be entirely superfluous to your requirements.
* Unless you are downloading lots of TV/Movie rips, you won't be needing anything more than a 250gb HDD.
* Depending on how confident you feel replacing Vista with Windows 7 (either obtained via upgrade offers, or through 'other means'), the specific OS might be a consideration.
* Wireless-N is probably unnecessary at the moment; unless you are already equipped with a wireless-n router; and have a HUGE broadband connection, or want to use your laptop more than 100 metres from your home. Though for the few extra pennies it costs, it's a little bit of future proofing that is worth having.
*You arn't going to be doing any OS virtualization, so don't need any of the features exclusive to high-end CPUs. (fortunate, as £400 is not going to buy a machine with such a CPU :-D )
*You do not need 4gb of ram; 2gb will be more than enough. Coupled with this, you do not need a 64bit OS. Infact, you'll have fewer compatibility issues with a 32bit OS.
*Is portability a significant consideration? sounds like it's going to be a laptop that gets shifted from one room of the house to another, and is never more than a few metres from a power socket?
#34
Sure I don't need wireless N?? and I definitely don'y neeb bluray. It will mainly be used in the house so battery life won't be too much of problem. My current computer has 40Gb hard drive so 250 would be plenty. I don't mind upgrading the software but if it comes with windows 7 then that's a bonus!
Wondered if this Compaq Presario CQ61-225SA would have better graphics than the Tesco 5732Z?
Also looked at the Argos Samsung deal or the Argos Acer 573zz.:?
Can't find anything like the Asus deal:x

Compared to the 'popular auction site's' item code 150378278756 it's a saving of nearly £100k :w00t:
