Is this Windows 8 RT or the full Windows 8 allowing side loading of software?
Is this Windows 8 RT or the full Windows 8 allowing side loading of software?

To answer my own question this says full Windows 8...
Full W8
I got one of these and it's the biggest waste of a tablet I've ever bought. When I first got it in February it took 3 reformat attempts to egg windows 8.1 installed without crashing due to dodgy graphics drivers causing it to blue screen all the time.
Once that was eventually sorted by asus via a drivers pack update (via asus live update) it was fine until a few weeks ago where I was connected to the internet but refused to allow you to browse. Tried all the usual things and it still wouldn't work so I decide to reformat it again. Now it won't do any windows updates or windows store updates so it's sat on my wall unit gathering dust.
Nothing but problems and issues save the £150 to get a decent android tablet or one of the newer 8" windows tablets as this one it not worth a light.
Full Windows 8 but a smudgy screen full of reflections
It is a really stellar reduction of price, and with the warranty included that probably makes it a solid deal.

Still for sale at 349 at John Lewis, refurbs going for over 200 at some other places. And only just over a year since it was brought to market at 400!

I have one of these. It's good value at this price. Everything runs very smoothly and no problems at all with updates. The screen is very good. Perhaps not as fast as the newer W8 tablets but great for this money.
I've got one and love it, use it everyday, also bought the transleeve stand and Bluetooth keyboard for it, so can use it as a Netbook if I want to. (which in turn it did replace my old Gen1 Netbook)

Win8.1 update went on without any issues as well.
1366 x 768 :(
was thinking about getting one for £250 a couple of months back, bought one thanks OP
Bargain at this price. Only 4 left though, so be quick.
had one for over a year. never had any issues with the os or updating to 8.1

the micro USB which is used to charge it though has started to get loose.

£150 is a stupid good bargain for what you get.

don't be put out by the atom processor. it is plenty quick and because it's an atom the power usage is low and get an easy few days use between charges.

Great deal thanks OP but now sold out :(
Damn sold out :-(
Could the me400c playback a movie file @ 4000 to 8000 Kbps?
They have more stock again so can anyone please un-expire this thread? Thanks

Now ordered thanks OP and heat will be added when the thread is unexpired :D

Quite subjective but ill say yes.

Using my me400c to post now and just tried a few movies over wifi from my nas and according to the live stats on VLC i was getting 5-9000 on the largest hd vid i could find and it was all smooth.

Im also assuming though the rates from vlc are combined a/v
This is a great tablet. I've done a clean install of windows on mine and it feels alot more responsive plus you get about 8gb hard drive space from deleting the recovery partition. My battery seems to last longer as well.
Mine arrives on Monday. Just wondering which case to get. Any recommendations? I like the look of this one...

I've not done the clean install, just how it was out of the box then updated to 8.1 through normal MS updates. However just to say as I recall when I first got this tablet it did run like a dog, until it connected to the net, downloaded a load of updates, rebooted a couple of times (the updates hung allot at restart and startup). Then windows did a self maintenance, couple more updates and a reboot and then it flies like the wind.

That case looks okay, but seems a little low when rolled to prop the tablet up. I opted for the admitted overpriced official Asus cover and Bluetooth keyboard/touchpad and that has been spot on. The cover from Asus bends differently to that and you get a much better prop height.

Either way though this does need some sort of protective cover.
Thanks for the feedback. The tablet has arrived now and I am doing all the updates.

They have the official Asus transleeve in grey for around £10 on Amazon so I might go for that.

OK I have done 108 windows updates. It rebooted and applied 3 further changes while booting and then promptly said "failure configuring windows updates. Reverting changes." It's taken ages to get this far.

Presumably it applied some incompatible changes at the same time. I thought windows normally works this out in advance.

Oh well, when it eventually finishes reverting I guess I should apply however many updates remain & try again. Is this normal? Thanks
Have received mine, no marks etc, looks in great condition.

Word of warning ⚠ don't launch all the updates for windows 8 before installing 8.1

First do the Asus update. This will install updated bios and software package.

Then get up windows update from the desktop.. Can do it by selecting properties on computer icon from taskbar. This will allow you to get to control panel.

You should only need to select hotfix 2871389, install this. Then install windows 8.1 from the Store.

I left mine overnight to run and finished it this morning.

If you made the mistake of trying to install all then windows 8 updates mine failed and then spent hours going back. It restarts many times but will recover, just leave it and when it finally recovers do the above.

Remember this is not a full blown laptop and updates etc will take ages just be patient.

So far it does feel speedy, very impressed for the price and having played with Win 8 on a laptop can see how much better it is with touch screen.
Hi sadbiker01,

thanks for the information.

I like the tablet but I am at the point of sending it back due to the frustration of trying to update it to Windows 8.1.

When you say run the Asus update do you mean the icon on the desktop? When I run that it says it cannot connect to the server.

I managed to get the tablet to restart after getting stuck on the "reverting windows updates" screen. I then tried running Windows update again which said there were 111 updates but then failed with an error.

I will try your method if I can get asus update to connect. Thanks
Ensure your wireless is set up and connected to your router and you can browse internet to ensure connection working.

Have just been carrying out final windows 8.1 updates. From what I have read there were some graphic driver compatibilities' issues with windows 8 updates and wonder if that may be causing the windows 8 updates issues. But thankfully you only need the one hotfix as I gave above. Once that is installed the 8.1 update from store worked fine.

You just need to give the tablet plenty of time whilst doing updates. Remember this is where it will be limited as trying to do lots with limited resources.

If you can remember this is a tablet not a laptop and use it as a extension and not a replacement its great. For this price its a bargain with Tesco year warranty.
The WiFi connection is fine but live update won't connect. I Googled it and it seems like a common problem but I haven't found a solution.

I think it would be best to do the bios / software package updates via live update or manually before the windows 8.1 update. So I am investigating how to get and apply the updates manually. However, in the meantime...

Just rebooted after troubleshooting windows update (fixed some db errors) and applying that hotfix and now it is installing 109 updates (on the blue screen before windows finishes booting). 6 of 109 so far.

I will leave it doing the updates for now (it will take all day anyway) but fully expect it to fail & revert again as it did previously. Will keep fingers crossed.
I am very sorry to hear of these issues receder, I do hope that you are successful.

I can only assume that there are now masses and masses of updates whereas when I got mine over a year ago there were relatively few and I have been incrementally updating as I go so 8.1 just went through for me.

Good luck!
Thanks troyb,

I bought a Lenovo Miix 2 8 recently and went through the whole Windows 8 to 8.1 update palava with that. However, it worked first time on that and was quicker at downloading and updating than with the Asus tablet.

I will persevere for now as it looks like a great tablet once the updates have been done.
Ok I finally have it updated to Windows 8.1 and hopefully all drivers and BIOS updated. By the way, what is the latest BIOS version that others have?

It took 6.5 hours to do the 109 windows updates. After rebooting I had already downloaded the latest driver package and Live Update so installed these. Live Update still says that there is no connection and asks me to turn on WiFi even though it is already on and working fine for every other application. I then installed Windows 8.1 via the Store which took until 6 pm. All in all it took around 9 hours to do all the updates!

I must do a backup now!! Thanks again sadbiker01 - I do get what you are saying about not expecting laptop performance but I was expecting the update process to be quicker than it was, especially after my recent experience with the Lenovo Miix 2 8 which did update significantly faster than this. Even more strange as, in use, the two feel very much on a par with each other in terms of performance.

I've spent the whole Wednesday upgrading to 8.1 stumbling upon every single possible bump.
Now that it has the 8.1 upgrade the tablet is stuttering and lagging. I can't even watch youtube without everything looking like stop-motion.
What would I need to do get a clean 8.1 install?
Hi asdOK, have you tried the Version V5.0.0 driver updates from the Asus

You could also try the ASUS Live Update V2.1.2.13 from the same location although it doesn't work for me.

It's running pretty smooth here although YouTube is not always smooth.

Edited By: receder on Aug 07, 2014 13:52
Are you trying YouTube through a browser? I had stuttering issues to begin with with Chrome, so started to use MegaTube Win8 App and that solved it. I was advised at the time it was something to do with transcoding and HTML5? Shrugs.

So I was using the app for a while, however Chrome recently for me has been fine and video playback via the browser on the desktop has been smooth.
