ASUS S56CA-XX081H , 15.6" screen 750GB + 24GB SSD, 4GB Intel I5 (3rd Gen) Ultrabook/Laptop - BRAND NEW - £250 OFF !! - £353.93 delivered @ ARGOS - HotUKDeals

Says £250 Off (we all know about Argos RRPs) - but previously on sale at £399.99 so looks a bargain . Seems a well specced Laptop/Ultrabook for the price - Intel I5 3317Um processor and Brand New -not a refurb (most I've seen at this sort of price have been refurbs ) .Has a Cd drive (rare on these Ultrabooks ). Home Delivery only so you could get 4.5% Quidco and your10x Nectar points . Apologies if previously posted but couldn't find it on search . Not for me as I'm after a 17 incher but looks good to me ? Similar spec model without the 24GB SSD (ASUS K56) available for £329.99 also from Argos (but is collectable in store) .

The unit is a bit bulky and a little heavy.
The SSD is not for storage. It only acts as a cache to speed it up in the same way memory does.
Your OS will not fit on the SSD.
SSD's can fail but not too often. They cause the unit to take a long time posting.

On the latest bios the fan is not noisy. No louder than any other laptop.

Upgrading any ASUS laptop to Win 8.1 will cause the recovery partition to no longer work.
Win 8.1 generic drivers may also cause functionality with modules that require specific ASUS drivers to operate.

For £350 its an ok unit. Nothing special. Wouldn't pay any more than that and definitely not the original asking price.

Im a tech under contract by ASUS to fix these type of units everyday.
Not a laptop that we see everyday so no huge amounts of issues.

I'm almost convincing myself reading up on it ! really wanted a 17" screen but seems such a great deal especially with 4.5% Quidco and 10x Nectar points . Someone tell me its rubbish so I can forget it and save myself £330 odd ;)

how do i get quidco and nectar same time?

Go to Argos through the Quidco site ,then when Argos comes on there's a bar at the top of the screen saying "click to collect Nectar points " . Hopefully you then get both .Its worked for me on Thompson and Morgan (got both ) .

Every time I consider buying a new Laptop my present one (4 years old ) stops chuntering and works smooth as silk - Does it know it could be heading for retirement ?

Not rubbish by any means. My only question is the shared video card. It's not dedicated.

quidco and TCB are 1.5%?
#7
Is the hard drive easy to swap over in one of these, as I would put a ssd drive in, if I bought one.

Anyone know?

Really wanted a touch screen :( anyone know of a cheap 15" laptop with this spec?
#10
Thanks Rogparki. Just when I needed.
FYI, this laptop is on Saveonlaptops for £ 349.99 on Saveonlaptops ASUS S56CA-XX081H. But is currently out of stock :-(
Please note that specs suggest 24 GB SSD as well.

Also, checked processor details (2012 model). This has Wireless Display (though it depends on laptop manufacturer whether this functionality is enabled). If someone can confirm please?

Quidco is only showing as 1.5% for me...is it the same for any one? Thx
#12
Am I right to assume the screen resolution is 1366 x 768?

Refer to Quidco T&Cs " Cashback will initially track at 1.5% the further 3% will be inserted into your account in the next 30 days " .

What's the Warrenty on these - do you have to send it back to Argos online or can you just take it to your local Argos shop?
#17
Don't forget you can get 8% cashback on this if you have Cashback extras with your Halifax card.

screen is ****.

I've looked into this as it seems a common problem with this model. There is a thread that explains how to go about updating the bios which resolves the noisy fan. - http://forum.notebookreview.com/asus/696320-asus-s56-fan-runs-constantly-very-loud.html

Agree the resolution is not ideal, but can you find a sub £400 intel i5 laptop with a better resolution?
#21
Do you guys know of anything similar but a better screen resolution: 1920x1080? And if possible with touchscreen? even if it's for £100-£150 more?
#22
anyone know if this has a USB 3 port? cant see it listed

daaamn that's tempting... need a new laptop. Not sure I even need anything this fancy. A 14" around £300 to £350 is perfect

for a n00b, what is the advantage of having both a SSD and a 'regular' harddrive together?

technically to be called an ultrabook the device needs to have an SSD, SSD's are faster, lighter, more energy efficient but very expensive! With a hybrid set up you can put your most regularly used data on the SSD to improve performance.

1x USB 3 , 2x USB 2 according to specs

be realistic... you won't get a high quality touch screen laptop that cheap.
#26
2.3kg. That's very heavy for an ultrabook.
#27
Starting to convince myself :) Could get this now ,then get a 17 incher with full SSD in a couple of years when SSDs become the norm and are no more expensive than mechanical ones ? (and my eyesight gets worse )

And without touch screen? any laptop with 1920x1080 for less than £500?

Good spec for £350. Don't know why people expect dedicated graphics and high screen res for anywhere near this price range.
