It's an i3 without hyper-threading so still has better performance per GHz than any AMD chip or a Core 2 Duo. More power efficient as well.

I don't think this one has hyper-threading tech. Hyperthreading is only in core i3 or core 2 duo. this one is dual core albeit with higher cache and faster bus than the normal dual cores.

comet's model is core i3.

Yep, that’s what WITHOUT generally means. :D

Not too bad for price but Dual Core needed for Windows 7 really and integrated graphics not too good probably 128mb as well but I guess for that price you will find it hard to get dedicated, but at least ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4250 would be nice.

CPU sucks on this. Better to pay < £50 more for i3 CPU
banned#11
CPU not good for windows 7 - defeats its own purpose. You get what you pay for, another 50 big ones and you get an i3 which is a far superior CPU and has right architecture for W7........dont get the point in shirking out £50 for something you will keep for a few years.

amazon are doing the i3 version for £399 I am configuring for a friend now its a nice bit of kit. Not as sexy as my Alienware MX15 with I7 , Geforce 260, 6GB Ram and SSD drive! :P

There seems to be much confusion about the Pentium P6xxx series. It’s an i3 with hyper-threading disabled and some other more arcane features also disabled.
For typical applications that will be run on this class of laptop the lack of hyper-threading is irrelevant as most of those apps will only use 1 or 2 cores and these Pentiums are dual core.

GOOD BRAND, GOOD DEAL.

Reading above comments makes me sad.

Why do some people feel a need to express their opinion on hardware they evidently have no clue about?

"amazon are doing the i3 version for £399 I am configuring for a friend now its a nice bit of kit."

Got myself an Acer5742 (370M) for £379.99 (recent Hotdeal that only got to 67 degrees). Interested in what you're configuring, could you give a rundown?

I'm still getting used to Windows 7. Seems much needs to be ran in 32-bit mode.

Also, when I run the Windows Experience Index, I get:

Processor 6.7
Memory 5.5
Graphics 3.9
Gaming Graphics 4.8
Primary HD 5.9

Here's a more detailed on:

Windows 7 Home Premium

System
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Manufacturer Acer
Model Aspire 5742
Total amount of system memory 3.00 GB RAM
System type 64-bit operating system
Number of processor cores 2

Storage
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Total size of hard disk(s) 285 GB
Disk partition (C:) 41 GB Free (69 GB Total)
Media drive (D:) CD/DVD
Disk partition (F:) 162 GB Free (204 GB Total)
Disk partition (X:) 11 GB Free (11 GB Total)

Graphics
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Display adapter type Intel(R) HD Graphics
Total available graphics memory 1275 MB
Dedicated graphics memory 128 MB
Dedicated system memory 0 MB
Shared system memory 1147 MB
Display adapter driver version 8.15.10.2202
Primary monitor resolution 1366x768
DirectX version DirectX 10

Network
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I wonder others Index numbers for comparison please.

Got this laptop, runs really well, hard disk is a little on the small side but can't complain about the price. Processor is great, no over heating (common on Asus), battery life is beyond what i expected and is the quietest laptop I have used in a long time. Runs both W7 and Fedora 16 with out a hitch which is more than can be said for my compaq which has a better spec.

9 out of 10 for all round value for money.
