Hi, That sounds a good deal. Does this apply to certain items only or is the offer store-wide?.

Voted hot!.
#2
any more info on this ?
#3
The email does not state that it is limited to certain products or certain categories of product, so I hope it's safe to say it is for everything :)

Hi, Just received the e-mail from PCWorld.co.uk and they're not letting a lot on unfortunately :(. Just says check your nearest store for further details. Surely there's not a 17.5% saving store-wide?. If there is this is a brilliant offer in fairness.

Bah its a 30 mile round trip for my nearest store, im after a new TV , bit of a long trek if its only on floppy disks :)
#8
You can get this offer with some products online also, just posted a HP DV2166 laptop deal with the 17.5% off.
#9
Just rang them. It only applies to certain products and definitely isn't shopwide. Nevermind, hopes of a cheap xbox360 quickly fade:-(
#10
Are the internet prices with the promotion stamped on them, already reduced of the VAT or should it reduce at checkout?
#11
There is a "We'll pay your VAT" stamp on the product image, any prices i've looked at have the vat already deducted.
#12
Actually, it's just under 15% off the usual price of items included in the promotion ;-)

Looks like the marketing spin has successfully managed to confuse a few punters.

Still, at just under 15% off, it's still a good deal
#13
Anyone know what the certain products are?
#14
i got the same mail as well. but is't will be working on COMPAQ C310? it's 449 on sale price. anyone find it cheaper in other shop? thanks alot lol~~

Anyone know what the certain products are?

The Rep I spoke to was reading from a list of Desktops, Laptops, too many for me to make a proper note of at the time. He also said that it would apply to some peripherals, memory cards and, i quote "an MP3 Player".

I specifically asked him if it applied to anything in the gaming section , as that was what I was after, and he said no.

The advertised prices are the final prices ! I was trying to work out if the VAT would be deducted but it already had been. Theres a small note at the bottom of the advert ;
+ Where you see "We'll pay your VAT", the price has been reduced to the equivalent of the EX VAT price or lower.

So on the first page it shows this model - Advent 7109A - and at the end of the ad it says - £398.72 inc. VAT -

Then when you click on the item it says - web exclusive price inc vat £398.72 - under that is says - in-store price £499.99 - and just at the top it says - Free Delivery on Laptops over £400 - very confusing but you can reserve and collect.

The difference between the two figures is 25%, not 17.5% and if that 398.72 does include VAT and you could argue it has, as per the sales sheet, you could end up with the purchase price of £328.94, a bargain!

No problem Ray. Doesn't seem to be many items that PCWorld.co.uk are paying the VAT on (only found one SKU No. 207515 but not checked through their web-site thoroughly).
#22
The email ad does state 'UK's biggest computing SALE' so no TV's or gaming offers i'd imagine
#23
I wonder if this means computers or computers and anything computer related as well, I'm expecting it to be both since accessories have such high margins anyways they can afford to.
#24
+ Where you see "We'll pay your VAT", the price has been reduced to the equivalent of the EX VAT price or lower.

Which means there is STILL VAT being charged on this item, which I believe is untruthful in the eyes of the ASA! I could make an argument that I only intended to buy something because I wasn't giving money to the Chancellor to fund the war in Iraq, when the reality is that this is just a small discount masquerading as something else.
#25
All 'VAT Free' offers from all company's still actually pay VAT to the Government, its the law. They usually mean it is a 17.5% discount, which after all, is the VAT amount you'd pay, so it is like buying something VAT free, but it isn't
#26
Is it silly season or clever marketing?

I want to replace my laptop of 4 years, mainly because the 35Gb HD is now full of business apps etc (no music or games) so as a direct replacement I would be willing to spend in the region of £1500 again :w00t: NOW since PCW has their "VAT FREE" sale on, I looked at one machine and saw it was £1600 (less a penny) but found the same machine at John Lewis for 200 quid less and with a 2 year guarantee. ouch... £200 is £200 and could buy a higher version of MS Vista than the basic version PCW are offering... just my ramble :whistling:

Maybe not such good deals after all.

Vat is actually equivalent to 14.89% (Discount)
Example
£100 Product + Vat = £117.50
£100 Product inc VAT = £85.11 + 14.89 (vat) = £100

To find the Vat on a product which includes VAT
You multiply by 17.5 then divide by 117.5
Hope this helps

Offer in national press today, selected items only.
only 3 laptops in deal, sadly no compaq c310. Was in pc world first thing and the staff knew nothing about it they asked manager who then produced flyers.

Actually the VAT rate is 17.5% - what you're saying is that once factored into the final prices it represents ~14.89% of it.

Using your formula to work out the vat it would be just easier to multiply the VAT inc price by 0.1489 to get the VAT i.e £200 inc x 0.1489 = £29.78 to Gordon and his pals (saves on having to do a divide step)

Have done a google search, it seems that the offer only applies to two products on the pcw website.
1. EI SYSTEM 302 DESKTOP PC - INTEL PENTIUM 4 517 PROCESSOR+ 17"SAMSUNG TFT + FREE C48 PRINTER
(121701)
http://www.pcworld.co.uk/martprd/product/seo/121701
2. EI SYSTEM 312 DESKTOP PC - INTEL PENTIUM 4 519 PROCESSOR + 15" TFT FLAT PANEL MONITOR
(000870)
http://www.pcworld.co.uk/martprd/product/seo/000870

Has anyone gone to branches and found something interesting?

So put your calculators away....take your discount and be happy!!!

Lol this always causes confusion everytime pcw do this promotion. I work there and it makes our life such a pain in the arse. Head office never warns the staff of this or infact any promotion or if they do its like on the day. I have to laugh at the people hoping for 17.5% off the Compaq c310 deal as well, they are only selling that at about 5% margin as it is!
#33
Went to the local pcworld, no signs up and staff didn't seem to have a clue, no real surprise there :(
