These games haven't aged well, leave the rose tinted memories in your head... The least you want is ZX Spectrum/C64 standard games that have playability. Or just play the late 70s/early 80s arcadey classics using MAME.

Just an Atari emulator, probably best putting the money towards a tablet or xmbc build.
Might be a good present if you get a working one though...

Had an ATARI as a kid. Made myself ill with the excitement as I wasn't expecting it.

MAME however is free on the PC and are the original arcade versions. ATARI graphics were always a bit away from the arcade version and generally not as good.

Obviously this is an ok purchase if you want a trip of nostalgia.

I loved space invaders but also loved outrun with the red Ferrari and the blond babe passenger ! Can you still get outrun for a cheap console ????????

Spend a little more and get a RasPi B+ and controllers of your choice. Takes about 20 minutes to setup will run anything upto N64 and PSX.
I've got mine running RetroPie with NES usb controllers. Total cost was about £40 to play whatever old games I want.
If I get bored of it I can either load more games or use it for something else.

cold - thats a lot of money to play a bunch of old games you can quite happily find around the net to play in a web browser

Can't decide whether to vote hot or cold on this.

On the one hand, I had one these many, MANY years ago, and absolutely loved it.

On the other hand, as has been mentioned above, a lot of the conversions weren't that good and a lot of classics are missing (I suspect the reason is that a lot of the missing games were by Activison and others rather than Atari, so the licence wasn't available). My own personal favourite, Defender, isn't there either :(

Just noticed that it doesn't come with the paddle controllers either. Games such as Night Driver (used to own this one!) need the paddles to work - not sure how well they'd work with the joystick, or even if they work at all...

As also mentioned above, while this may well be a fantastic nostalgia trip for some, I'd imagine most people, specially those only used to modern games will quickly become bored with it. I'm very tempted though!

I remember my Uncle could get through over 100 sheets on ATARI Missile Command.

Wouldn't get anywhere near that far on the arcade version. I have MAME on my PC. 100's of games exactly the same as the arcade.

The VIC 20 cartridge games were actually a step up from ATARI, such as Pac Man etc.

I still play Moon Cresta, Space Invaders, etc on the PC today at the age of 47 !
#27
I'm 47 too, and I still play Galaxians on my PC (and on my Xbox)!

And yes, the Atari versions never really got any more difficult. I could play Space Invaders for hours without losing a single life.

Heat added for outlaw & yars revenge!

Surprised it doesn't come with ET, they buried enough...(_;)

Yeah these games are all the rubbish ones, need Galaxian, Galaga , Defender etc

My first thought too!! I must know how bad it was

The E.T. game really wasn't that bad. I had it back in the day and I recently played it on an emulator. For an Atari game it stands up pretty well. If you play through a lot of Atari games you'll find some awful crappy ones - much worse than E.T.

I just think the expectations for that particular license were sky-high. At the time, E.T. merchandise was like gold dust. It was the first time I remember there being a Christmas supertoy. Every parent wanted to get for their kids E.T. figures and dolls, but there weren't enough to go around and shops could happily charge the full rate.

Atari saw this and released a decent enough game and thought they could match the demand for the other E.T. toys with their £35 cartridge - a very high price in the early 80s; I think you could buy a Palitoy Milenium Falcon for about the same price. Because people were paying this premium, and because of the rarified E.T. brand consumers expected nothing short of a perfect classic and anthing less would be panned. The game, although quite good, wasn't perfect and so it got a bad reputation for being the worst ever.

It really wasn't.

Yeah, I watched the Atari documentary highlighted in the Freebies section.

You could see how it all played out - the downturn in the market generally happening around the same time as the E.T. release with all its marketing.

Plus movie tie in games are usually rushed and don't work well

Didn't know about the high price, etc. Still want to play it though :)
