Be careful, this is only for IDE drives not SATA.

Very little use nowadays

Very useful if you are buying a new PC, with this you will be able to access files, photos etc on your old drive.

It's handy for reusing those IDE drives from old PCs lying around in your loft. Anything over 100Gb is handy for data backups or moving files around. It's also an easy way of getting data off an old PC - saves having to boot the pc and network it; just rip the drive out and put it in one of these.

I agree it's handy for accessing old drives.

D.

And not that it does not support SDHC cards, so any card with more than 2GB will probably not work. Cold for me.

LOL ... quick everybody check your computers and any old hard disks which you have had since 1990 becasuse all the IDE drives are just disapearing into thin air

Just what I need !!

The Memory card reading & USB ports are just a bonus to me so certainly not cold due to SDHC not being supported.

"Very little use nowadays"??

I disagree. A lot of use nowadays. When folks are upgrading their PC's I bet that the majority of the PC's they are upgrading from have IDE drives. And this little device is ideal for them.

However your comment "Be careful, this is only for IDE drives not SATA" is a very useful one.
I bought a HDD dock from eBuyer recently when I saw it on HUKD. It was for a SATA drive and not the IDE drive I had in my loft. I had to return it at my expense.
I wish your words of wisdom were on that post! :D

Just bought one

I have 2 of these with 500gb hd's in and they read 8gb Lexar sdhc's fine.

nice buy,i paid £17 for something similar from Amazon, that could accept both sata and ide drives but had no readers or usb ports.
all my old drives are ide so far from being useless this would have done me fine.

spotted a poss weakness...only supported till XP (going by OP). So Vista and Win 7 not doable? Sounds weird if so. Maybe the ..'and above' applies to both mac and pc but why not Win98SE and above if so?

These were probably made when XP was the latest os, as they are plug and play I doubt there would be any issues with the latest ms os as there's no driver sw to install, unless ms as changed something.

An alternative (and of more use if you deal with a few) is an external adapter (picked one up on ebuyer). It has an ide connector, a 4 pin power connector & a single USB. You plug it into the mains, plug in the USB into your PC and you're away.
I found it invaluable when I used to repair PC's (don't anymore due to ill-health). I agree PC's under 2 years have Sata but I found most customers (especially businesses) had older beasties so this was great.

It was the £2.99 shipping option. I ordered it mid-day on the 15th and it arrived the next day.

Same here at £2.99 but no delivery so far. Hope its RM because i've no transport to get to some couriers depots that would take a full day to get to and back via trains and buses and likely cost £20ish.
