Does this come with a 500GB HD or do you have to put your own in ?
I went to the makers website and it say up to 750Gb supported ?
#3
If the thing has 500GB in (which the description certianly implies), then this is HOT. Heat / Rep added.

Yes, it comes with the 500gb hdd installed. They do various versions, hence the upto 750gb.

I got one of these for 39.99 + shipping on Amazon a couple of weeks ago. I suspect that the importer was selling a few off cheap, for marketing purposes ;-)

They are well built, and seem to use quality components. DVD is a Samsung drive, and the 500GB disc is a Seagate Barracuda apparently. I was also pleased to find that the SD reader reads the 8GB SDHC card from my EEE PC :-)

Downside is their size, as the DVD drive is 5.25 ". They are a bit of a brick, but quite a well-styled brick.

good price for these days if you need all functionalities (HDD, DVDRW and card reader)

anyway, just missed very good deal few weeks ago on this:
£ 39.99 - http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=890209

Nice one, Heat and rep!
#11
Oh yes, this is very tempting. Can't decide if I absolutely need one as i'm using my 360 HD-DVD drive as an external disc reader, plus I have a pair of external hard drives. Decisions decisions.
At £39.99 I wouldn't have been able to resist.
#12
Scorchio.... Excellent for the Money. Voted Hot Hot Hot....

Interesting, anyone with the Philips DVD player with USB going to have a go with this? Will it need files off a DVD as well for the DVD player to play? Mmmm interesting........
#14
Insanely cheap price considering the 500GB inside!!

As has been said this was around a couple of weeks ago on MSE

They (Amazon Market Place), also did a neat 500gig unit without the DVD for £29.99 and a 320gig for £19.99 with just the drive and no card reader. Got both.
No problems with delivery or the product.

Hm. Only useful if your laptop has neither a DVD writer nor card reader nor sufficient hard drive space.

if you've got a desktop, just install these separate components INSIDE your computer. Pointless to have it on USB, your transfer rates will suffer as well as you will lose a hefty amount of space on your desk.

you can pick up a dvd writer (£15) & card reader (£3.50) for next to nothing nowadays. The only component of worth here is the HDD. BUt i won't buy a beast like this just for the storage space.

It's a gimmick.

If your laptop needs this, then it's probably time to think of an upgrade.

Actually from the photo it looks like a Pioneer XLB series drive and the small picture on Ebuyer is a different fascia. Its maybe not set in stone what drive comes with this?
#18
I think that this would specifically be an excellent purchase for Asus EEE users....
#19
I got one from Amazon the other week and it came with 500gb unformatted hard drive. Works brilliant a little bulky perhaps but you also have the added dvd writer

So rather than buy this "gimmick" of a "beast" you advise me to litter my desk with three items or throw away my old but faithful laptop and spend £400+ on a laptop plus another £40+ on a backup device ? :whistling:

It's a pretty good "gimmick" to me.

Exactly why I ordered 2 (1 to use & 1 for backups).

Voted hot (even though it's ebuyer).

I have the philips HDMI DVD player. I find its quite fussy about what it recognises.
I can try it with this when it comes but I expect by the time I get round to it , the unit will be out of stock!:whistling:

#26

Very tempting.... the only problem I would have is that if either the DVD or the HDD breaks down, it's rather useless.
#29
thinking about this for my holiday

i need something to transfer jpegs from camera media to hdd
without a PC.

Only need 120GB at most so if there is something like this without dvd
and less memory for less price then I would like to be advised, cheers.

I don't think you can transfer files from SD to HDD without a pc.....could be wrong though.

Eh? How so? It would be more useful in this situation than a external HDD only, that broke down - you would then have zero functionality!

Besides, this is the same about ANY device! If it breaks, it is useless...

wasnt there a deal on these months ago.................about £35 ?

It was originally £39.99, then they increased the price, presumably when their stock was depleted rather quickly. I just wanted the HDD too so got both 500 with reader and then could not resist the 320gig for 20 notes.

I have the 300 gig mediatank from amazon a few months back.It is big bulky & most of all beautiful.I do a lot of cd ripping . The £35 one was 170 gig & £49.99 got you the 300 gig +£6 del ,as far as I could remember.
#35
I was going to post this too but was beaten to it. Excellent deal, I already have a client interested in it.
